Just in case you missed this story:
Meet the unheralded high school QB who already has NFL coaches salivating
Pretty strong endorsement over a pretty stacked group of QB's. We'll see, but he may be the steal of the year for quarterbacks. Good addition!
I mean let's just face it here,
We have a high ceiling / low floor prospect situation with this kid. He could come in, maybe as a RS Freshman (doubt as a true freshman, but you never know), grasp the offense, and gunsling us to offensive brilliance.
He could also never crack the lineup, provide insurance at backup QB until we can hopefully land someone of elite ability. Or he could crack the lineup and throw a thousand interceptions before they put in someone else.
That's what this whole recruiting saga is about. The Unknown.
pruitt and staff convinced him to take an official visit to ut last weekend, just a few days before the signing period.
"it was just another option that i wanted to check out," shrout told wbir in a phone interview. "i was intrigued by the football program and i just wanted to see what they had to offer and i'm glad i went out there because i fell in love with it."
shrout liked what he heard from pruitt and athletic director phillip fulmer about the direction of the program. He also spoke with offensive coordinator tyson helton, who told him the offense would be similar to what helton ran at usc. And knoxville's welcoming people helped too.
"southern hospitality is definitely a real thing," shrout said. "that was a change from where i'm from in california, people aren't like that, so that was nice."
"i love winning and i'm a real competitive person so i'd like to turn the program around and get it going in the right direction again."
shrout only started for one season at hart high school, putting up more than 3,000 passing yards his senior year. Spending time as the backup, he focused on improving his fundamentals and knowledge of the game.
"it's like a chess match on steroids," shrout said. "i really like the mental part of the game, especially when you get to the college level and everyone around is so talented and so good, so it becomes more you have to know what's going on. It's a mental game and i love that part of it. I'm a super competitive person and it's one of the most competitive sports out there. It's just an amazing game and i like playing it."
Tennessees coaches had never talked to JT Shrout before last week and they convinced him to come to Tennessee. Allen, Banks and Wood Anderson never seriously considered Tennessee or had visited Knoxville until this past weekend, and they all ended up as Vols.
Interestingly, there was a small loose tie to Shrout. Shrout has worked out with a California qb group called qb collective. That organization is run by Richmond Flowers III who is the son of VFL Richmond Flowers who was a senior when Fulmer was a freshman with the Vols.
Shrout looks like an underrated guy. Many if not most coaches want to start "their guy" at QB as soon as possible after taking over a team. If he signs with UT, he'll have an equal shot at starting IMO. If you want to warm the seat... then you go with QD if healthy. If you want to play for the future now... you start the Fr if there's any way you can.
Don't be surprised if Shrout is competing for playing time next year.
I am impressed with the young man. He's not the prototypical slow-footed, drop-back passer I had envisioned based on the descriptions of others. He is lean and athletic with good footwork and he's highly mobile within the pocket. Even when flushed he keeps his head and eyes up and focused downfield looking for open receivers. And on top of this, he has a lively and accurate arm.

Boom. Surprised me to see how many picks he threw in his senior year but get that shored up and learn in the pro style offense should set this kid up for a great career as a vol!
Great arm but you can easily see where the INTs are coming from. Almost too much trust in his arm...ala Cutler. Hopefully coaches can work on that. But dam...boy can sling it.
