‘23 CA QB Nicholaus Iamaleava (Tennessee)

Thoughts: Contract something like, "$350,000/yr guaranteed, and has to play through at least Junior year. $XXX amount bonuses if UT wins 8 games a year, 9, 10, 12, Makes Playoff, Wins Title..." ???
There really can't be performance-based pay language. Have to be really careful here.

Do we know for sure the contract he signed locked in him for UT? Don’t get me wrong I believe with everything going on that he is ours to lose but I am curious how the contract was structured for him.
It’s in The Athletic article. Can’t name a school but “our” collective owns his NIL rights, so yea

It comes over time. Not at once. And he couldn't make any other deals...so that's the disincentive.

So, normally, yes that would be the big risk. He'd transfer to Oregon in 1 years and get a new Nike NIL deal.

I mean, sure, he could decide $2mm after 1 year is more than enough and transfer. But hard to imagine passing up another 2...4...6mm. We would really have to mess things up royally for someone to want to transfer that badly lolol. That's a huge advantage over, say, the Quinn Ewers decision. His big NIL deal was from a Texan org anyway.

There are no guarantees ofc, but this is about as smart of a contract as you can have. Lots of incentives to stay and disincentives to leave. That's all you can ask for.
He signs away his future ability to negotiate/receive NIL money, we give him $350,000 this year with no contractual guarantee of more money in the future? Or we give a contractual guarantee of more money in the future that can't be tied to UT?

I still don't see the guarantee in favor of UT unless Nico is willing to take a huge step of faith on the wink and nod that isn't in the contract. There has to be something that ties him to the location, if not the school, for a determinate amount of time.

Serious question...does donating to spyre count as a charitable donation on your taxes? Asking for all my friends.
Spyre is a sports marketing agency. Not set up as a nonprofit. They are a standard LLC.

That said, I've seen some of these "booster groups" set up nonprofits. Spyre is more than that, though. Maybe in the future they could find a way to fenagle it and spinoff the 1951 club as a nonprofit fund...who knows.

I don’t understand balking at 8 mil. I would rather pay it on players than more coaches buyouts

Not even the same buckets. None of this comes from the university (as far as we know or can be proven). If between high net worth individuals, companies, bake sales, and car washes, Spyre can raise more than anyone else, Tennessee will be able to compete with anyone in CFB. It will be important that the school is willing to invest in coaching talent befitting the team talent, but it is no doubt it is easier to recruit the best coaches when you have the best players.

The "Tennessee will never be great again in my lifetime" crowd never understood that with the power of the fanbase, the money to succeed was always there. The challenge will simply be in meeting expectations quickly enough that they don't get impatient. By depending on the fanbase, you run the risk of them being as fickle as we know they can be, but with a fanbase as solid as Tennessee's, the very thing that makes us the punchline of national jokes, is the thing that will let us punch the best in the mouth and take their lunch money.

Does Spyre disclose how the 90% is being distributed and if I sign up, do they tell us in the newsletter which recruits they are planning to sign?
No. They try to keep privacy...a thing. As I think is the right thing to do.

That said, I've been a big proponent of them having a voluntary, targeted audit of these specific funds. It would only bolster their credibility and increase funding. I've tried expressing this to them on VQ and Twitter. They don't respond to many folks and I haven't seem them respond to this issue as of yet.

Why??? More attention...more top shelf recruits attention...More commits
Yea, I like that part of it for sure. But can’t that be done in private. But doesn’t this help other schools fans to do the same? I guess it can’t be kept secret but also brings the microscope. As long as they are bulletproof legal I guess it’s cool

I no longer have The Athletic and not sure if they posted the exact, semi-redacted, contract or just interpreted it for readers. So I don't know exactly.

Maybe someone with a sub could post any contract snippets for us.

Not true. There is no such agreement. They could technically deal with other schools but they just choose not to cause they’re all UT fans… Spyre is in no way officially affiliated with UT.
I should have stated I was talking about an informal agreement between the parties. Because that's exactly what it looks like from the outside.

It's a copycat league... difference is we will have a two year head start on those other start ups.
