Geez, I hope that doesn't end up like Eric Dickerson's trans am from Trans A&M. Is the contract online?
That wasn’t legal…this is. And that worked out pretty well for SMU. Four years of greatness. They got caught cheating with other athletes. Most notably a disgruntled linebacker who got drummed out of the program but retained documentation of getting paid.

I know, I just don't like there not being a clawback on the 350 K. I was talking about how A&M gave Dickerson a Trans Am and he went to SMU anyway.

Dude I know wth this is.

I read an article. I do find it way more than coincidence that an unnamed HS player signed a deal, and Nico is in CA where HS players can sign.

Still, contract isnt binding. And, he may change his mind 9,000 times before December.
First time an 18 yr old had 8,000,000 not to and it be legal. You're free to your opinions.

SMU gave him the Trans AM…he drove it around campus and famously during a SI interview. Maybe he had two?

isnt all he has to do is sign elsewhere? man, devils in the details, no one has ever done that.
If he signs elsewhere, then he won't get paid. He'll get the upfront 350k, but forfeit the other 8mm or whatever.

Once he signed his rights away, he basically signed up to be a Vol + $8mm or a non-vol and $0 additional.

The way I see it - we purchased a $350k Call Option on him. A small risk in the grand scheme.

way I read he has to pay that back if he goes elsewhere.

Interesting question, though RB values have fallen greatly as well.

That said, if someone offered us Kamara again...he'd be worth a lot.
Right about that!

Watching this NIL stuff evolve.....and what I know about Nico's "deal," this is kinda scary. Schools are just buying kids. This is just the beginning and schools must adapt, or get passed over.

That would make sense, it would almost be legal malpractice not to have a clawback in there. I dang sure would get my client to tell me he did not want a clawback in writing before I drew it up that way.

This is the one I was talking about. If you ever get the time to watch that Pony Excess documentary, it is well worth it. If I was an SMU fan I'd be so pissed the way things have developed.

Eric Dickerson admits how he was actually gifted legendary gold Trans Am - Sports Illustrated
I watched it. Any SMU fan from 40 years ago still alive has most likely developed a sense of perspective. Lot of money in that alumni and without the death penalty they’re a member of the Big 12 and in good standing. But AD’s are never going to go unscathed if their signature is on a check paying off a player. They messed up hugely when you had to be extraordinarily sloppy to get caught cheating.
