We all know why
That's where I'm at. I want to hold off on the racism charge until I see clear evidence that's what is causing the comments. I'd do (and I know the rest of this board would) if the situation was reversed and you had a white person minimizing the accomplishments of a black athlete.I assume you mean because she's white.
My whole life I heard white dudes scoff at the explanation "it's because I'm black" and now the world has flipped.
Maybe she's just jealous of all the attention Clark is getting. It's not like the retired NBA players are any different with the young stars (of the same race). They go pretty far with the hate. Imagine Sheryl Swoops interviewing Clark after a big win and just straight up telling her to her face why she's not good enough to win a championship...because Shaq did that to Donovan Mitchell on live TV. It's just how these old bitches are. It's a generation of haters.

I think Swoopes is just an old head (and perhaps seriously misinformed) and doesn't like seeing the record broken. The previous holder of the points record is also white, FWIW. Jason Williams's comments were just as ridiculous, IMO.
That I can see. Kind of related - I did detect some subtle "if you like Caitlin Clark more than Angel Reese, you might be a racist" when they faced off in the title game last year.Yeah, I think it's best to give people the benefit of the doubt, especially when there are other plausible explanations (jealousy). Even if race is a factor, it's more likely that Swoops is bothered because she's looking at it like people are over-appreciating her because she's white rather than I don't like her because she's white.
Not sure about that one. Brittney Griner got a ton of press when she was at Baylor. Maybe you can make the same statement about her - some areas of the media probably wanted to promote her in part because she was a black lesbian...and if we're being honest, Clark's popularity level does have something to do with her being middle-America white. Girls basketball at large isn't exactly respected outside of what Clark's doing, and if she were a black lesbian doing this for South Carolina, I don't think she'd be getting this much attention.
I don’t think it’s necessarily bc Caitlin Clark is white either. I don’t think it helps that it was on Gilbert Arenas podcast, which has a reputation of maybe making race based comments from time to time. It can also be misinterpreted bc Swoopes was wearing a t shirt that read “fearless, female & black.” That’s fine. There’s nothing wrong w/ that t shirt . If it were Rebekah Lobo or someone wearing the same shirt, but it said “white” and she was clearly disparaging a black player who was a superstar and making their team must see women’s basketball, Rebekah Lobo is looking for a new job. That's where I'm at. Griner’s $hit attitude and being involved in a fight during Pat Summits final moments as a coach has always led me to have a negative feeling towards her.I'm not talking about press, I'm talking about nationwide love and acclaim. Griner was always mocked by the people who are into making jokes about masculine lesbians and female athletes in general. Clark has a lot of those same people's love.
Yeah, but I would argue Clark doesn't have love from a lot of the crowd that loved Griner. It's just 2 sides of the same coin. I agree that most of the love to Caitlin Clark is from a more middle America, white crowd. That doesn't have anything to do with racism per se - it's more just people gravitating towards things they can relate to.I'm not talking about press, I'm talking about nationwide love and acclaim. not sure about her sexuality but the black player at LSU, Angel Reese would be at least as popular, even if she isn't as productive. and that includes her disappearing for 4 games during the season without much of anything said about it. not as much the media darling at the moment, but early season and last season they were definitely neck and neck...and if we're being honest, Clark's popularity level does have something to do with her being middle-America white. you were arguing that CC's popularity was unique because she was white. I gave a contemporary example counter to that argument. So to be clear, you guys don't think there are any white people who would care less about CC if she were black?
Mexicans like Mexican boxers. Black dudes love black QB's. But white people don't love white basketball stars? Of course they do. You've ever met that guy who loves every white WR? The best selling jersey in Minnesota was Adam Thielen up until 2 years ago, when Justin Jefferson was arguably the best WR in the whole NFL. Of course being white has something to do with CC's popularity. What are we talking about here?
I'm excited about Cooper Flagg, the great white hope. I'm not afraid to admit it.

nothing more or less than that.
both of them are popular because they are best. plenty of unpopular white chicks out there playing basketball. of course there are going to be some people who like one player over another because they "identify" with them, never understood that personally, but it exists. but its not a unique CC/white situation like you made it out to be.
Cooper DeJean, the white cornerback from Iowa, will probably be one of the most popular jerseys for whichever team drafts him this year. Like you said, I think people kind of flock to the people that they relate to, especially in a case where the person is an underdog role or in a group that is typically not the majority of the profession .So to be clear, you guys don't think there are any white people who would care less about CC if she were black?

Guess who all my Uncles' favorite NBA player was?...there was pretty much just 1 white guy to choose from, and they all chose him.

Not to make this anything political but 5% and 7% of the population in Iowa and Minnesota respectively are African American so it would make sense for a white player to be more popular in those states. So to be clear, you guys don't think there are any white people who would care less about CC if she were black?

Can’t wait for Cooper Flagg. And everyone thought they hated Redick and Laettner. Wait for this guy.
