California Lunacy Thread

"No ceasefire" meant more destruction of housing and death to those inside. Housing for everyone, guilty and innocent. So yeah he had a point.
If you and like-minded neighbors lob rockets into my yard for decades, you don’t get to play victim because I’m better at it. If you break into my home to rape, torture, kidnap and kill us, the hell with your homes and your depraved tactic of making them, the ‘innocent’ who elected you, your human shields.

You visited this upon them. When I feel secure again, it can stop. That’s the only point.

And you‘ll know how to prevent a repeat, but we both know you will, don’t we?

Honestly...

She's not wrong too refuse such a thing. FDNY is entirely structural in their firefighting. They are very likely not trained in the firefighting that needs to be done in LA.

Kinda appears the Cali FD isn’t either.

What they up to now? 31,000 destroyed acres?

Lot of conditional factors there. You know this. The boots on the ground very likely had the training to combat it. But much like the Maui fire, once those winds kicked in, there was little to stop it. Plus, the infrastructure needs were not being met.

After the hurricanes.

Insurance companies have been doing this for a couple of years in California. They weighed the cost to rebuild against the policies they were using and came in the red each time.

It costs way, way, way more to rebuild in California (also adding in the permit process which is absurd) than just refusing to issue new policies. They may be "losing" money on the front end, but this fire has shown it could easily bankrupt small or medium insurance companies when claims start to get filed. Hell, even the larger ones like State Farm, Nationwide or Liberty Mutual would take a hard hit when you look at the numbers they are projecting.

Not even going into the smoke damage for homes not in the fire directly. Imagine having to replace several hundred thousand HVAC units...

I'd be willing to bet you will see a lot more insurance companies not issuing policies after this is said and done. And those that do will raise premiums to a level not seen ever.

I'm surprised that more companies haven't left CA already. Politicians have denied rate adequacy and used executive orders to force coverage for too long.

Nationwide started non-renewing CA risks a year ago, leaving billions on the table to get out from 10's of billions in inadequatly priced exposure. They've done the same thing in FL and TX for property risks within 5 miles of the coast.

Very few admitted carriers are left writing property in coastal states due to beurocrats using rates as a political tool.

Can't blame them for getting out of States that are loss leaders.

Couldn't the NYFD be used to backfill non wildfire responsibility/areas so more local firefighters can be allocated to wildfires?

LA is a huge city in terms of area. Those other areas still need firefighters.

That’s what I’m saying. Surely they can be used in some sort of capacity that is useful.

They are drafting inmates out of the local jail to support LA fire crews….

Even if all that was accurate, it doesn't mean Wood wasn't calling for making innocent people homeless.

This is nothing new...

Indeed.

One might reason that if inmates can support LA Fire Crews, so too could FDNY.

But as LA clearly has everything under control, I guess the issue is moot.
