California Lunacy Thread

I’m proposing a 2% cut to FDNY.

We’re going to remove all the phones from central dispatch.

It’s only 2%, don’t get your panties twisted. The call center will probably be more efficient actually.
A cut can be good or bad. just like growing the budget could be bad as well.

I would look at what the administration/hr of them look at for 2%
I would look at any social/DEI efforts for 2%
I would look at any green efforts for 2%
I would look at any donations, especially to foreign nations, for 2%
I would look at any marketing or branding efforts for 2%

You could probably cut 30-40% of any government agencies budget and if what is left over was spent wisely they could be better equipped and more effective. But regulations get in the way

Of course it matters what is cut.

You think that the Los Angeles, CA city council was cutting Social/DEI/Green dollars?

i have no clue. just supporting the general belief that what is cut matters a lot when considering if its good or not.

It depends on what they cut before I can consider it good or not.

Do you think city council decides where the budget allocation goes? If that was part of the voting process, then we would already know where the cuts went because that would be in the bill, and then people in here would be screaming about no hoses if hoses were cut.

I don't know how they do it in LA but our county budget has itemized expenditures per dept. Our county sheriff doesn't get x amount of money to spend as he see fit, it's allocated within the approved budget.

OK, TBH IDK that much about city government. LOL. Turns out we do know what was cut. Nobody is giving any specifics on the cuts because it doesn't make the case they want it to. I can't imagine they've already gone through their overtime budget or that it's impacted this disaster at all.

So yeah, flat out, right-wingers have been killing LA for a week over budget cuts to [checks ChatGPT] administrative positions.

“critical for maintaining levels during …. Wildfires or other disasters”

🤷‍♀️

Or cut the 2% from the hose budget.

What I read from this thread either directly or indirectly by following a link or post said something like $70 or 78 million dollars was cut. Thats not 2% of any numbers listed in this thread that actually apply because their budget is ~970 million?

Furthermore...I dont care if it was 20 million which would be 2%...how many more of those broke down fire trucks fully staffed with firefighters would just $20 million dollars a year buy??? A bunch. Bet 20 fully staffed. How many more diesel mechanics (which were part of the cuts according to the article) could just $ 1 million dollars a year buy? How many more trucks would have been available to fight fires? They cut the budget and laid people off to give even more money to the homeless people who are said to be responsible for 50% of the fires that take place in LA (also from this thread, and interviews).

The reservoirs were supposed to be full.

The fire dept was begging for more $$$ just 2 months ago and issuing warnings after having their budget cut.

This disaster was objectively handled about as poorly as could possibly be done, despite what I am sure were heroic actions on the ground by the existing LAFD doing the best they could with what little they had to work with. This was an abysmal failure by the people who get paid VERY well to serve ane protect their citizens. Last I saw 24 people had died. Over 12,000 houses and buildings in what was mostly a very preventable disaster. The fire chief makes $750,000 a year and sounded almost as bad as Biden lying and having no answers in her press conferences. The mayor was getting drunk at a cocktail party in Ghana...Africa...instead of running the city. Everything the Governor said and did both leading up to and during this nonsense was either ignorant, dishonest, or a combination of both and lots of people...even Democrats...want all 3 of their heads on a spike politically and professionally as they should. This should be career wrecking for most of the idiots responsible including the mayors right hand man who is already under investigation by the FBI for his crimes. A lot of these people have lost everything. Allegedly some of them recently had their homeowners insurance cancelled as well. Those who did have insurance likely still lost a lot. Some of them lost their lives, or a family member, or pets etc. The overwhelming majority of this damage should have never happened IMO

A bulk of these fires is outside LA city limits and covered by areas the county FD serves. The county's FD budget is 2x the city's budget

22-23 county actual fire expenses: 1.562B
23-24 county actual fire expenses: 1.595B
24-25 county adopted fire budget: 1.756B

apparently "gloria" is a guy lol

Los Angeles: The California State Parks said that they have arrested a 60-year-old man, Gloria Lynn Mandich, in connection with a brush fire sparking the massive fire in Los Angeles County that has been wreaking havoc in the region for days now, reported Newsweek. The officials have not confirmed yet whether the arson was behind the raging wildfire.
There have been speculations around the cause of the wildfire with many stating on social media and otherwise. Meanwhile, the Newsweek report added, authorities are probing the origins of the fire. The latest fires have killed 10 people and destroyed more than 10,000 structures across the region.

saw a report that newscum saw Elon at the LAFD live streaming with the Battalion Chief and he called the CHP to get him "the hell out of there" - ordering the removal of Elon from the dept.... Elon brought the LAFD 17 cybertrucks filled with starlinks, food, and water. He was trying to help us and he was treated like s---.

Must want to Musk Proof the state as well. Ridding the state of the President and Worlds Richest Man in one year is quite an achievement. #winning.

Climate is more conducive for fire in that region.
Indeed, the original name given the bay by the Portuguese explorers in 1542 was “the Bay of Smokes” due to the smoke from all of the (preindustrial) wildfires.

Without human intervention, the area would periodically burn itself clean just from the prevailing climate (which of course was before the first drop of fossile fuels had been burned)
