California Lunacy Thread

Both can be true.

You can have local government which failed to anticipate this problem and cast blame, AND you can admit the fires were made worse by weather conditions associated with climate change. Its not just one or the other.

I live in Florida and the state in early spring often cuts out underbrush which as grown up in the winter but which dries out in Spring and becomes tinder for lighting-caused fires when the storms start up in May/June. So if I'm in Cali, and know what those dry conditions will do if the winds blow, its perfectly fine in my view to complain this could have been anticipated.

Similarly, I live in Florida and it is apparent to me that the frequency and intensity of hurricanes is increasing, tied to ever-rising increases in warm ocean temps. I think we are right to complain that we ought to be doing more to try to curtail that.

Funny you mention Florida...

They used to have significant wildfire activity until they got smart about it as you noted. Prescribed fire, selective cutting, prevention measures, etc.

And they don't even have a fraction of the firefighter base that California has. But somehow, they've managed to mainly mitigate the threat posed by fires. There are still some, but they've gotten very good at making sure the threat is minimal. With a fraction of the cost associated with the aftermath as well.

California is wildfire and wildland firefighter central. There is no way on this earth they could have or should have not been treating this in advance.

Does anyone else hear these rules for the mandatory evaluation the sheriff is sharing?

Misdemeanor and up to $1000 fine.

How does that discourage harden criminals not to break in homes where maybe $100s of thousands in valuables are awaiting them?

It doesn’t mean anything when everyone knows it won’t be enforced.

He said they won't book and release. There will be jail time. Seriously a few days in jail, if that happens, to harden criminals is nothing.

Will this show down the petty crime scared small time losers that can't take a night in jail - maybe?

Over/Under on how many post LG vomits absolutely hammering the Republicans if this were happening in a GOP dominated state. Sure he’s criticized the dems in passing. But it’s been pretty weak so far.

“As you prepare to assume the presidency once more, I invite you to come to California again – to meet with the Americans affected by these fires, see the devastation firsthand, and join me and others in thanking the heroic firefighters and first responders who are putting their lives on the line,” Newsom wrote in the letter shared on X.

“In the spirit of this great country, we must not politicize human tragedy or spread disinformation from the sidelines," he continued. "Hundreds of thousands of Americans – displaced from their homes and fearful for the future – deserve to see all of us working in their best interests to ensure a fast recovery and rebuild."

Years of this dipsh!t and other democrats sniping at Trump and now "we must not politicize human tragedy or spread disinformation from the sidelines".

Trump should tell him to kiss his azz where it tastes like azz and then tell Californians help is on the way. Newsom will just impede the process and politicize it.

Newsom just politicized it when he made it a public invitation. It's a tactic to take the attention off leaders in California and try to put it on someone else like it's Trump's fault.

These are the same conversations that Trump had with Newsom in 2018. The climate activists, regulations, court challenges from far left groups apparently has slowed preparation for these moments. The fact that firemen would turn on faucets without any water pressure is a major failure of local and state leadership or lack there of.

He's lucky to live in a state that has a good fire program in effect.

I will say this about California... it does transcend political parties for the most part and had more to do with government overreach and bureaucracy than anything. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, put in an ambitious plan to perform prescribed fire in California to the tune of a half million acres a year for 15 years. Like literally what amounts to a governor executive order to get it done. But it never happened.

So... why not? Different government agencies limited the USFS, Calfire and other entities from doing it unless they jumped through crazy hoops to get a burn done. Like sometimes months or years to plan and execute. Which also meant during that time, fuel continues to pile up just waiting for a match.

Between the significant hurdles firefighters have to do to get it done and then, even after approval, being in fire season and lawsuits from environmental groups (looking at you Sierra Club) and California government agencies putting a stop to it and local governments not wanting the smoke wafting over their town for a day or two, you get a recipe for disaster.

Yep. Most Governors are superb when compared to Newsom. And this entire situation ultimately comes down to neglect and a lack of leadership.

It’s a tragedy, no doubt.

This isn't unusual. Desantis did the same thing after hurricanes Ian, Milton and others.

After the hurricanes.

Insurance companies have been doing this for a couple of years in California. They weighed the cost to rebuild against the policies they were using and came in the red each time.

It costs way, way, way more to rebuild in California (also adding in the permit process which is absurd) than just refusing to issue new policies. They may be "losing" money on the front end, but this fire has shown it could easily bankrupt small or medium insurance companies when claims start to get filed. Hell, even the larger ones like State Farm, Nationwide or Liberty Mutual would take a hard hit when you look at the numbers they are projecting.

Not even going into the smoke damage for homes not in the fire directly. Imagine having to replace several hundred thousand HVAC units...

I'd be willing to bet you will see a lot more insurance companies not issuing policies after this is said and done. And those that do will raise premiums to a level not seen ever.

You can have multiple priorities as the leader of an organization. There’s nothing wrong with that.

But as the LA Water Chief, water has to be up there.

Water needs to be the #1 priority.

So just so I'm clear, Crowley has not been fired yet. I misunderstood an earlier post to mean she is gone. The news reports have confirmed my understanding to be the same as yours.

Crowley and Bass are only at odds right now.
Who wins the intersectionality victimhood game?

White Lesbian or Black Woman?

Just wanna know who I’m supposed to be cheering for.

California’s Homeowner Insurance Market Freefall: Regulatory Folly Run Amok

Richard Maher, July 2, 2024

Key Takeaways

California’s homeowner insurance market is in the grips of an urgent crisis as major insurers cancel existing policies, refuse to write new policies, and, in some cases, abandon the state’s insurance market entirely.

Insurers’ unsustainable losses are largely due to poor forest management, which has contributed to wildfires that are more severe and destructive than any recorded in California history.

Insurers’ losses have grown exponentially to unsustainable levels. California’s leaders must focus on better forest management and free market solutions to bring insurers back into the state’s market and restore reasonable costs.

Wildfire-prone California to consider new rules for property insurance pricing

Updated: 6:44 PM PDT Sep 21, 2023

By ADAM BEAM Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A new plan from California's insurance commissioner aims to stop the nation's top insurers from leaving the wildfire-prone state by letting them consider climate risks when setting their prices.

Unlike most states, California tightly restricts how insurance companies can price policies. Companies aren't allowed to factor in current or future risks when deciding how much to charge for an insurance policy. Instead, they can only consider what's happened in the past on a property to set the price.
