California prop 8:

No, I am saying if evolutionary theory is correct, than the fact that humans aren't the only species doing this (in fact, not even the only primates) then it could lend credence to the proposition there actually could be a "gay gene" in the wild kingdom. It's evident in nature, and not something unique to humans.

My post was intended to be somewhat sarcastic.

If evolution is at play why should this be due to a genetic condition and not in response to some other cause like climate or overpopulation?

The argument I have heard on that is that recessive homosexuality could be a net benefit in social groups.

Illustration: Say in a prehistoric setting, you and your spouse have three healthy children. You work hard to hunt game and gather food. Your wife cares for the children and tries to gather what she can as well as manage your dwelling. Tough life.

Now imagine your wife had a gay brother. He has no offspring, and sees your offspring as family. Thus, this gay person is contributing in gathering resources for your family and alleviating some of the burden for caring them. That is on a small scale, but the basic idea is they are able to increase the odds of success of reproduction and raising children for family members, by contributing their time and resources to them as opposed to struggling to raise their own.

2 adults caring for x kids and 2 adults caring for x kids may be less efficient in a prehistoric setting than 3or 4 adults raising x kids.

There are obvious weaknesses in this argument, and it clearly has no bearing to our modern or even historic culture.

I would argue that a "gay gene" is assuming too much. Might there be the same driver? Yes. But that doesn't mean it is necessarily purely genetic. Some speculation has been focused on prenatal hormone levels, for example.

That is fair.

Are you familiar with evolutionary theory? It states that new species arise through gradual adaptations in existing species driven by natural selection. The fact that monkeys exhibit homosexual behavior, as well as humans, could be of interest. I'm not saying it is for sure, but it could be. That is all I meant. I think you are trying entirely too hard to pick a fight here.

As for the rest of your post, I have no clue what you are trying to say.

Yes I've heard of the theory of evolution but I have trouble grasping how homosexuality will produce any evolutionary results.

Not trying to pick a fight, I just don't get the connection you are trying to make.

That's why I asked, maybe you would care to enlighten me??

Maybe you are trying to say the more evolved human would vote against prop 8?
