Calipari on Tennessee

And you'd never heard of calipari until he came to UK????

You either just started following basketball seriously, or live in just a small Kentucky bubble.

No my post above says i heard about him at Memphis. Just ESPN tho. You gotta think, you guys new him so well because he coached against you for years. UK fans had no reason to follow Memphis. I remember that he made Memphis relevant but never watched one of their games until the 08 tourny. I had no reason to.

Not true at all!!!!!!! Bleed Blue By Birth. Even during the billy clyde years.

I don't get it then. I watch Tennessee every chance I got, but when they aren't on and another game is. I watch it and know who is who. Just doesn't add up not knowing who Cal was.

Exactly. I don't know cal because of Tennessee, I knew who cal was when he was at Umass. Thats like saying i don't know who Izzo, crean, Calhoun, Boeheim etc are because we don't play them. As a fan of college basketball, I know who most coaches are.

@UKCoachCalipari on Tennessee "They're going to be much better than people think. They play the way you win in the NCAA Tournament."

Meant to post this earlier in the week but got caught up at work and never got around to it. SIAP.

When Calipari opens his mouth lies come out. He is lying. What hs is saying is "Coachs speak" They all do it.
If we had won only 1 game last season, he would say the same thing. Media #101.

Like i said. I exaggerated a bit. I knew him in the later parts of Memphis. Too young for Umass. But only knew him from ESPN and such. I just never really had any desire to watch Memphis during that time span. What incentive would a UK fan have to watch Memphis anyways. Im not one of those fans to watch other bball games just for the sake of it. Thats what SportsCenter is for

See i actually had no idea who he was. Never watched one of his games till 2008. Had no idea about his scandals and tbo couldn't of cared less about him. When we hired him i thought for sure our AD had just lost his job. I really don't ever remember anyone in Lex even bringing him up.

"And Here We Go" - Joker - YouTube

Don't know how to get the actual video on here.

Lets not put words in my mouth. High profile games ill watch. A lot of UL, UNC, Duke, etc just for sake of watching them possibily lose. Like i watched UNC get crushed by Florida St...But Memphis...what rival fan sits at home wanting to watch them.(no offense memphis posters)

C'mon, do you really think he's cheating right now?

Nah, I'm sure he's a completely different person, now that he's in Lexington.

In all seriousness, his past problems may have more to do with the atmosphere and people he keeps around himself and his program than anything he directly does himself. Just a thought.

I live in Kentucky and that's a lot of "UK fans" they think UK is college basketball. Honestly idk how you follow college basketball at all, and only kinda knew who Cal was.

I just turned 22. I had only heard of Cal in his later years at Memphis. I knew nothing of his past at Umass.

CCM's teams will always be disciplined to be competitive in a game. A disciplined team is very dangerous. Cal understands that.

Get off volnation's board with your garbage kid. You're making us sound bad!

Vol fans - I know you hate us/Cal, but he's always had great things to say about UT/Martin just like last year after our UF game and he went on complimenting UT. I think he likes Martin or was happy to see Pearl gone.

Good luck this year!

Yeah he hated Pearl.......that's one thing I liked about Pearl was how much under the skin he got to the other coaches in the SEC and how they disliked him....Pearl beat Cal several times on the court including the john wall....demo team at Kentucky...

I'm sure when Martin starts beating Kentucky some, the compliments from Cal will stop.

I give up

I know you don't agree.....I just don't think you could combine john wooden....cal......coach K and whoever else you want to throw in there and recruit the way cal does without something shady going on behind the scenes.

Cal should be a good/great recruiter and I think he is a much better coach then some on here give him credit for but as competitive as the recruiting game is I don't think anyone can hand pick guys like he does.

Saban is the equivalent on the football side and is a great recruiter but other teams can still compete with him for players and the top class.

Cal doesn't hand pick, he's missed on some guys, if I need to name them I will.

Like I've said, I fully agree he used to, but at this point i feel he no longer needs to. If you read about kids who are freshman ad sophomore, a vast a majority say "Kentucky is my dream school", or "I really like Kentucky"...and this is without having seen the campus, or even talked to coach Cal.

You can go 2 or 3 years ahead for recruiting, and if you asked 20 of the top kids in their class where they wanted to go...I guarantee half would say UK.

He's putting guys into the NBA at a better rate than anybody else...and don't say you could put these guys in the league...everyone has busts, he hasn't. And I don't think Gillespie had liggins, miller or Harrelson on track to be in the NBA...Cal gets there and BAMM.

As I've said before...if I'm a parent of an elite recruit, and our goal is to have him in the league in 1/2 years...UK is in his top 3 automatically.

Love him or hate him Cal's success speaks for itself.
If I knew I was going to face a team 3 times in a season that could beat me,I'd be talking them up too.
Seems to me, a lot of schools hire coaches that had issues with previous teams, ours included.

Maybe hand picked wasn't the exact word I should have used but its pretty Dang close.

No i don't think billy clyde would have gotten anyone there bc he was turning it into a dumpster fire of a program but there are many, many coaches......besides being a second round pick is not getting them to the NBA.....that is basically the same thing as an undrafted free agent....Liggins surprisingly Hung on for a yr but is more than likely gone this yr.....Miller if.he can hit a three and play defense he may stick but has not made the team yet....Harrelson made it bc he is huge and can rebound in a league desperate for big man.....if Brian Williams had quicker feet to schedule more reb per game he would be on the league also.

I will never convince you and you won't convince me..he almost pulls anyone he wants from this big schools backyards.....Terrence Jones was committed to Washington and switched at the last sec to come all the way across the country.....I just don't see it happening in the extremely shady world of basketball recruiting without something going on behind closed doors.

Might go over better if you add a JMO to that statement.
Insider evidence would be better.

That still doesn't explain why ya serious college BB fan would not know anything about Cal, easily one of the most recognizable coaches in college BB the last 15 or so years. The stripping of the FF from UMass; the famous feuds between Cal and both Calhoun at UConn and Chaney at Temple.

His scandals? Couldn't of cared less cause they didn't effect UK.

No effect on UK? Are you serious. UK was in the process of hiring a guy who had his last 2 teams stripped of their FF appearances and you say those scandals had no effect on UK?!? Are you kidding me? That's funny considering the UK AD publicly said that while there was no proof Cal knew anything about either scandal, the UK compliance office would keep close contact with Cal (watchdog?). So how could someone who claims to be a serious UK fan at that time be unaware of any of that?

I agree with this. Look Cal is not squeaky clean. The 2 schools he previously coached both had Final 4s vacated. There has been shady recruiting at Ky no doubt since he has been there. The Eric Bledsoe situation comes to mind then of course the strange turn of events with Terrence Jones is out there. The Enos Kanter situation was big and last year lots of rumors of payments to Anthony Davis so its hard for me to not at least think that some things are going on behind the scenes. But still I do think he is a great coach and he has proven it.

And Terrence Jones was 4 years ago? As I've said...yes I think he used to...however I no longer think he needs to.

Meaning...I don't think he cheated to get the Harrison's, young or Willis....the guys in his 2013 class.
