Calling MZTERRY

well that's your opinion, but it makes it no more right than mine.

My philosophy is this, I try not to do ANYTHING that could even remotely hurt my team. They are "my" team, and I want them to succeed. If I can't do anything to help them (cheering) I certainly don't want to do anything to hurt them or bring them down. When you boo, that is the only thing that can happen. Nothing good can possibly come out of it. If you had a son out there playing his heart out on Saturdays you would most certainly feel differently about people booing him.

So sure, you absolutely have the right to boo if you wish. It's a free country. I have no say over that. But just so you know, all of the rational, normal, mature people in the world think you look foolish.

right on.

I agree. Boing is not uplifting to the kid who obviously does not want to screw up and make mistakes. It adds MORE pressure and brings him down, and that does not help the team. Also, the recruits hear it. So, if you boo then I don't think you are a real fan.

Then that's your opinion, but it makes it no more right than someone who disagrees. If PJ wants to boo, then he's going to boo. I don't have a problem with it, because it doesn't effect anyone on the field, or play calling. If someone can't handle a few boos or some jeering in the stands, then they should probably take up something else as a potential career path, in regards to football.

That's my opinion.

If recruits hear a team getting booed by their own fans, they can pick another team that doesn't get booed by their fans.

Eric...I don't see how someone could claim thousands of boos reigning down in the ears of 19 year-olds would have no effect on these kids.

Sadly, this problem isn't going away and will only going get worse. The unfortunate side effect of certain social media...such as this board, twitter or the blogs that follow a news article...is that it allows anyone to say anything, no matter how inflammatory or hurtful it might be, and to do so anonymously. In turn, it makes booing amateur athletes so much easier to do.

Personally, I don't see a lot of difference between booing Justin Worley or A.J. Johnson from row 40 or walking up to him and telling him he sucks. Either way, it is insulting and cruel...the only difference is most people don't have the guts to get in A.J.'s face.

Do you think it helps the team to boo them??

No. I don't boo much, other than the refs. Not my cup of tea.

But, I don't understand condemning or restricting it, first amendment and all.

Do you think it hurts performance, in any quantitative or tangible sense?

A reasonable fan would say dont boo simply because you cant tell the target of said boos.

If you are booing the coach but the players hear it, then they probably think you are booing them.

If you want to be audible in your grievances, say something like make a better call, Butch.

Noise isnt just noise either, a whole crowd saying boo is different than saying statements on how they feel.

if you think I'm sitting there literally screaming "Boooo" in my living room then you need help.

how would you suggest fans deal with it? Should the band crank up Rocky Top after every 3 and out? Should we do the wave? Standing O?

Just Fulmer clap when things go badly.
Seriously, if you pay your hard earned money to get to the game, boo to your heart's content. As far as these people telling me or anyone else how to act in my own damn home goes? Well, they can go kick rocks.

Yes effort! Would you work your hardest for a boss and group of co-workers that boo'ed you after a 12 hour day?

Come on Man!

She should be very proud of her son's development.

Now, if we can only find someone who doesn't throw at his shoes or the 10th row...

See, you just have to recognize the problem to find the right solution. We don't need a different QB, we just need to find a 6" receiver that runs like a Ferrari. Problem solved.

Just because things are allowed doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

Booing should be reserved for referees. Booing a college team is classless, IMO. Yeah, we pay money to go, but those kids don't get paid and don't deserve it.

I have no authority to restrict it. I just think it's absolutely pointless.

And yes, for an already downtrodden team, I definitely think it can deflate them even more and have a negative effect on their play.

Also can have a very negative effect on a high profile recruit's perception of the program.

Only negatives can come from booing. No positives.

It's been said over and over in this thread that everyone has the RIGHT to cheer or boo as they wish. And NO ONE CARES what any of you do in your own home.

The debate is that booing can do nothing but hurt the team you are supposed to be a fan of and makes you look petty. If that is your wish, then by all means, carry on.

If ANYONE can tell me how booing can help the UT team right now then I will apologize for every comment I've made in this thread and say I was wrong.

I'm guessing that over half of Neyland Stadium would have been considered foolish at times in the past 10 years. Booing is just part of football, and all other sports. Those who take it personally, probably need to do something else that lends them away from criticism.

Public criticism happens in bigtime sports. It always has, and always will, and no one has ever quit because of it.

Can you give us any data that prove booing TRULY hurts this team? If you can't, you're just trying to pump some sunshine into something that happens everywhere. I remember UGA getting booed off the field a couple of years ago, but it doesn't seem to have hurt them. Bama got tons of boos when they lost at home to ULM.

You would be correct.

Just because it happens, just because it's a part of sports.... that doesn't make it right and it doesn't make it good for the program.
