I'll answer those three questions in order:I'm curious - is this just coach-speak?
Is Cal downplaying a legitimate rift between he and Pearl? Or, is there little to no rift, and the media truly exaggerates any tension that exists between the two?
Nobody with an IQ above room temperature would work for the athletic department Frank Broyles built. Also, why would one take the NC State job when he could get any of about 20 better jobs?
Ask the coaches he contacted how much they bought the idea Broyles wasn't going to still be pulling the strings. Nolan Richardson won a National Championship in spite of that bigoted geriatric. No coach of any note will ever show up there again until Broyles is permanently and irrevocably out of the picture. The AD that Frank Broyles built led Arkansas to an NC, not to mention Broyles was retiring when they hired Mr. Pelphry
"Retiring," yet he was the guy who made contact with Cal, Tim Floyd, Bill Self, and Lon Kruger. Yeah, he's out of the picture.
The football matchup hasn't exactly been occasional in the past decade or so. In the scope of one football game vs one basketball game, don't you think the football one would be worth more financially? It's not like he would threaten to leave over one series, at least I don't think his ego is that big. I guess UT would be the real roadblock in this case, but I would really like to see some revenue figures concerning it.
Is there a place to play in Nashville other than the Vandy gym? Nobody should EVER play on that absurd court.
Remind me what Arkansas has accomplished since Nolan had enough of Futile Frank's stupidity. As a kid who grew up rooting for Arkansas I was very happy to see Broyles out of the way, but it's not like he was Dickey and essentially killed Arkansas' basketball program or anything.
A few things:
1. He feels his team is "seeming to get better."
2. Tennessee is as talented as any team they've played this season.
3. This game is a "great test at a great time."
4. Gives Bruce credit for creating a "niche" that has gotten basketball out of the shadows of football and the Lady Vols.
5. Not sure if Wesley Witherspoon is going to have surgery or play out the season. He's going to have that discussion with the team doctor.
6. Tennessee is considerably more inside oriented than last year.
7. Didn't want to put Evans at the point, but finally did because he can do some things there that alleviate pressure on Anderson, Dozier, Mack, etc.
8. Thinks any alleged rift between he and Bruce is "something you guys(the media) play up."
9. Stiil thinks the game should be played in Nashville. Stated that each school would make 500K off the game every year and it would be good for lobbying efforts in a clmate of budget slashing. Also mentioned that Louisville wants to play Memphis in Nashville but his preference would be to play Tennessee there. About scheduling: "No one is going to force me to do anything."
10. Memphis has future games scheduled against Duke in Chicago and Kansas in St. Louis.

Stan Heath had been a head coach for exactly one season and simply captained the ship Gary Waters built through an unbelievably fortunate NCAA draw.Stan Heath, while a terrible hire, had at least some background. He'd been to an elite 8. On the other hand Dickey made one decent basketball hire and then hardly gave him any time to do anything before basically canning him.
That's why it absurd for Cal and the Memphis fans to continue to state that the game is more important to Tennessee than Memphis. Tennessee has to endure an SEC schedule while the tiger cubs have to wade through the joke of a conference that is CUSA.He won't do that. Cal enjoys being a big fish in a little pond. Guaranteed a good record evey year even when putting an average product out there. There is nothing he can do besides threaten to leave. Which, again, he won't.

How often does Tennessee come play football at the Liberty Bowl to make the football "purse" so freaking lucrative? You need to wake up and smell the coffee....or it may have something to do with the fact UT can cut the cord on the football series, in which case that douchebag get's overruled by UM's AD. Memphis SURE doesn't want to lose that purse. memphis has such an inferiority complex, it's unsettling.
Neutral sites are lame, and should be reserved for tournaments and exhibition games. He is just mad about having to compete for recruits in Memphis with another big-time program. He is easily one of the most despicable coaches in college basketball. I've never even read a "media" article on he and Bruce, only the things that come directly out of his mouth.
