Cal's Teleconference Today

I don't agree with Cal on the UT vs Memphis game should be played in Nashville. Don't take the game away from the students...it should be on campus.[/QUOTE]

First of all, the students represent a small percentage of the actual attendance at these games. Second, they do not contribute any donation dollars. Third, most college students love road trips. Play it in Nashville.

1) The players ARE students.

2) They will contribute donation dollars when they graduate. Which is what most Universities bank on.

Lol - comparing Roy to Thad in recruiting? He coaches the Tarheels for goodness sake. He's got a big advantage and Matta still brings in elite talent.

Roy was an awesome recruiter at Kansas too...

The football matchup hasn't exactly been occasional in the past decade or so. In the scope of one football game vs one basketball game, don't you think the football one would be worth more financially? It's not like he would threaten to leave over one series, at least I don't think his ego is that big. I guess UT would be the real roadblock in this case, but I would really like to see some revenue figures concerning it.

The answer to this is a resounding no. BB is the cash cow at Memphis, everyone knows that.

Here is what has occurred at Memphis since Cal has been there:

1. Tiger Scholarship Fund donations first year Cal was at Memphis were around $1-2 million. This funds ALL athletic scholarships.
2. Tiger Scholarship Fund donations for 2007-2008 were $6.6 million. Projections for 2008-2009 are over $7 million.
3. Sold out Basketball season tickets the last 2 years and around 16,000 in 2005-2006. Season ticket sales for FB are around 20,000 (many of which are of the $90 per season variety). For premium BB seats, TSF donations are required. Football, you can just buy the ticket.
4. Cal has raised private $$ to tune of another $3 million to renovate the Finch Center (BB practice facility)and create a Tiger Hall of Fame at the Finch Center.
5. Number of Ambassadors has increased from 7 in 2002 to I believe 18 or so now. These are donors who agree to pay a minimum of $500K over a 4 year period. And many give more.
6. The only national exposure Memphis gets is from Men's BB. What kind of price tag can you put on the exposure from last year's Final Four and the previous E8s?
7. Did I mention the $11 million Nike deal Memphis just signed? Tigers are one of a few non-BCS schools with such a contract. Oh yeah, the deal is predicated on Cal being there.

So no, I don't think 1 home game against the Vols every 3-4 years is more $$ than what Cal and BB does for Memphis.

Two things could end this series if eventually played at neutral site. Tigers get into BCS conference. Cal finds a couple of neutral site or home/home marquees games (ala U of L or Duke neutral and KU or UK home/home).

That's why it absurd for Cal and the Memphis fans to continue to state that the game is more important to Tennessee than Memphis. Tennessee has to endure an SEC schedule while the tiger cubs have to wade through the joke of a conference that is CUSA.

This statement is so tiresome. Tigers can't just up and join the SEC or Big East. Believe me, we Tiger fans would love the competition and $$ from a BCS conference. Do you know how hard it is to get up for an 8 PM Wednesday night game versus Rice?

Check out the strenght of schedule of OOC schedule (which they CAN control).

CUSA sucks, no argument there. However, great teams beat the teams on their schedules, period. 47 consecutive conference wins is impressive, no matter what league it is. 13 losses in 3 1/2 years is even more impressive considering the OOC schedule Tigers have played.

Tigers just haven't lost games to mediocre teams in the last 3 1/2 years. Tiger losses since 2005-2006: Duke, Texas, UAB, UCLA, Ga. Tech, Arizona, UT (2), Ohio State, Kansas, Georgetown, Xavier, Syracuse. All of these teams were NCAA tourney teams that year and ranked in Top 10 at one time in those years (except GA. Tech).

If this was so easy to do you wouldn't see BC beat UNC at home, Portland St. beat Gonzaga at home, or Va. Tech beat Wake Forest at home. The 3 teams that won these games would finish third or fourth in CUSA.

I understand the various reasons behind John's desire to play the game in Nashville, but I agree with you.

Yeah, he wants Bruce to stay out of his yard.
And he doesn't really care to step in Bruce's, cause he does not need to leave his.

It was a very good hire. He was the only reason that we didn't have a losing record for the 4 years after he left. He left IIRC but was basically forced to resign.
Incorrect. KO's departure was completely of his own volition.

Was listening to channel 56 radio a couple of days ago when they were whining about the plight of the Grizzlies and "what to do". Lot of hand wringing about the head coach and whether or not to replace the coach now or wait until the end of the season. Had to call in and say it would be stupid as hell to throw away the second half of the season and just let Kevin take over for the rest of the year.

I'm not sure Kevin would have any interest in being an interim coach.

I don't see how being a head coach in the NBA for half a year could hurt his resume.
He's already been an NBA head coach for a season. I'd say the fiasco in Tucson last year would make him think twice about any situation that isn't well defined.

Once again - Kansas > Ohio State.

He's a good recruiter - but Matta has been ridiculous to get some of those guys there.

I agree to an extent, but its not like Roy had a good pipeline for talent in Kansas. Matta has a pretty good pipeline in Ohio.

And it hurt when he left. Like having a fine little fraulein leave you for a fat, unemployed guy who lives with his mother. Makes you take a long look in the mirror.

I mean, what does it say about the UT program (at the time) that a coach would rather be at Northwestern than on Rocky Top?

Maybe the lure of coaching Evan Eschmeyer was just too attractive to pass up...but, it's a sad sign when a coach sees Evanston as a better destination than Knoxville.

chill out. no one asked you anything, but you can gladly explain this if you wish.

Strange: The series that almost wasn't : Columns : GoVolsXtra.com

"UT's first-year athletic director Mike Hamilton had to dangle football as leverage to get the Tigers to extend the basketball series that would lead to the monster game that will be played here tonight between the top two teams in America..........
...... That November, Hamilton said the remaining four UT-Memphis football games under contract were off. No basketball? OK, no football."

....................
I realize you're a newbie and apparently not all that bright. People don't need an invitation to respond on an internet message board. You still haven't addressed how often Tennessee goes into the Liberty Bowl to fill the Memphis coffers so they can expand their sports programs. Besides, that article was written by Strange prior to a match between a #1 and #2 team in the nation.
