The football matchup hasn't exactly been occasional in the past decade or so. In the scope of one football game vs one basketball game, don't you think the football one would be worth more financially? It's not like he would threaten to leave over one series, at least I don't think his ego is that big. I guess UT would be the real roadblock in this case, but I would really like to see some revenue figures concerning it.
The answer to this is a resounding no. BB is the cash cow at Memphis, everyone knows that.
Here is what has occurred at Memphis since Cal has been there:
1. Tiger Scholarship Fund donations first year Cal was at Memphis were around $1-2 million. This funds ALL athletic scholarships.
2. Tiger Scholarship Fund donations for 2007-2008 were $6.6 million. Projections for 2008-2009 are over $7 million.
3. Sold out Basketball season tickets the last 2 years and around 16,000 in 2005-2006. Season ticket sales for FB are around 20,000 (many of which are of the $90 per season variety). For premium BB seats, TSF donations are required. Football, you can just buy the ticket.
4. Cal has raised private $$ to tune of another $3 million to renovate the Finch Center (BB practice facility)and create a Tiger Hall of Fame at the Finch Center.
5. Number of Ambassadors has increased from 7 in 2002 to I believe 18 or so now. These are donors who agree to pay a minimum of $500K over a 4 year period. And many give more.
6. The only national exposure Memphis gets is from Men's BB. What kind of price tag can you put on the exposure from last year's Final Four and the previous E8s?
7. Did I mention the $11 million Nike deal Memphis just signed? Tigers are one of a few non-BCS schools with such a contract. Oh yeah, the deal is predicated on Cal being there.
So no, I don't think 1 home game against the Vols every 3-4 years is more $$ than what Cal and BB does for Memphis.
Two things could end this series if eventually played at neutral site. Tigers get into BCS conference. Cal finds a couple of neutral site or home/home marquees games (ala U of L or Duke neutral and KU or UK home/home).
