Cameron Carr Transferring

I'm normally all for a player transferring or doing what they think is best.

But this is seriously a WTF moment when you think about it. We're already short handed and you would've thought he would've be in line for big minutes when he got healthy. Transferring in the middle of a season from the #1 team. Speaks volumes to where this guy was at mentally as me first type of player.
As Barnes intimated in his interview, this is probably some bad advice from his.. handlers. He is probably gonna try for a medical redshirt but his timing makes 0 sense. The problems with this current portal situation is its free flowing and rules change on a regular basis. Look at the fallout the Pavia Lawsuit is gonna cause for football. The new roster limits also are gonna cause changes. Walkons are pretty much dead all rosters will be smaller overall and if Pavia wins his lawsuit JC's become the new 'redshirting' destination for college football where walkons and developmental players go. The average college football roster goes from 121 to 105. The Average Basketball roster goes from 16 to 15. Most major sports are losing a ton of roster spots. Men's basketball is less affected because the roster is so small from the jump but 1 roster spot is a big deal.

I personally think that in the case of Barnes guys transferring out is mutually beneficial. They get their chance elsewhere and we have space for someone that might buy in. Barnes program is one that has to have full buy in. We have seen what happens when players do so. I know someone is gonna say all programs are like that but its not necessarily true. Barnes is old school no nonsense and these new kids have a hard time buying into that. Look at the players that ave played and done well with Barnes. Not just as a Vols but at the fake UT also. None of the guys he put out are Divas (basketball-wise) they are all blue collar get it done kinda guys. From KD to DK all guys that just show up and do their jobs. You don't see any of them being 'ME' guys. Even KD has never been a me guy. He is thin-skinned in social media but basketball-wise he is pure business. There was an article of all the 5 star players that Barnes has had and its an interesting list. How 5-Star Players Have Fared Under Rick Barnes | Rocky Top Insider

This stuff started with the UNLV QB walking away from his team during season this year. Shocked why individuals are surprised about this, it's the new age of college sports. The name on back of Uniform is more important than name on the front.

Individuals better cherish the Ziegler's and Mashack's of the world they will become far and few in the landscape of college athletics..
This isn't really new even for Barnes. he always has guys that don't buy in leave and the ones that stay tend to do well. They do a fairly good job of identifying them. That being said I hope Barnes has a plan in place he kept roster spots open this season and with the outgoing guys we at best return what 4 guys next year? Cade, Estrella, Boswell and maybe Okpara? This means we will see 8-11 new faces on next years roster.

The fact Carrs people couldn't see that and have him chill is kinda nuts. That being said it gives us some really awesome recruiting juice. .we have money and we have playing time. We are in on some pretty big names and I think we sign 4-5 high school guys and 5-6 portal guys to fill the 15 man roster. If Lanier can end up a first rounder that makes us more attractive to a lot of seniors looking to go out with a bang. Carr leaving is actually probably gonna be more good than bad.

Considering that it was a pretty minor injury early on and he’s clearly just opting out, would he be eligible for a medical redshirt? I know it’s common for people to milk one for a couple extra weeks to get one, but we’re talking about 3 months extra here…
Are you sure there’s been no setback and a doctor has suggested maybe taking a few more months off is advised?

1. Carr is leaving. Carr believes he can preserve eligibility, make more money and play more. Whether he is right or not doesn’t matter.

2. Carr has acted like a spoiled turd off and on the whole time he’s been here. I’ve expressed in the past that the legend of Carr has always been better than the actual Carr. He could keep it together in spurts, but ultimately acted selfishly in several instances.

3. Last week, we agreed to a better NIL for 25. He left anyway under some “advice”. He’s been close with Sanchez at UVA in the past, but also has some Louisville and Mizzou connections. Not sure where he’s going given his baggage.

4. There is (allegedly) some truth to the creepy story of Carr and DJ and (allegedly) underage girls. It contributed to DJ’s departure, but more importantly to Awaka’s. I said at the time that Tobe had some moral issues with certain players. I haven’t commented on who specifically, or why, because it involved a player’s family and (allegedly) minors. He was disgusted, and gave an ultimatum that resulted in Carr staying and him leaving. Barnes couldn’t take sides in a matter he knew nothing about, but Barnes loved Awaka and didn’t want him to go. To be a head coach today, you have to be shielded and shield yourself from certain realities. There are lots of groupies, and lots of temptations for these young men. I get that, and I understand there are lots of gray areas. That said, there is nothing acceptable about players compromising underage girls, if true. There are aspects of the Carr situation that have been messy and difficult from the start. He’s better off gone. Carr dug his own hole, dug out of it a few times, but he burned his last ticket. Maybe he needs a new start somewhere else. I’m not a pitchfork guy when it comes to player departures, but I am a bit relieved that he’s going.

I respectfully disagree that the worst of the worst D1 coaches wouldn’t approve of this behavior. This smells like tampering or under the table shenanigans. Carr may have been told not to say anything. Still, this is very bizarre. So much for the golden rule!
Would they be happy to welcome them in? Absolutely. But I just dont see many coaches actively encouraging this. Note I said “many”, not all. There are a few, but this is a bad look for the kid, the program, the program he goes to, and any of the money handlers that will be asked to give him a chunk of the load. Winning cures all ills, but the way this was handled was hot garbage and not many “professionals” would have told Carr to handle it like this.

It’s those that aren’t professional that I worry about. I think it’s more a bad look for Carr at the moment, at least until we get the full story.

Thanks for the context. While it sure would be useful to have had an additional body in the rotation, it sounds like he has hurt the program more than helped it. Potential only gets you so much grace.

4. This was not a one time thing for DJ and Cam. I’m (very) personally glad the two of them are gone…especially Jefferson. Idgaf if costs us a national championship; I can root for MY Vols with a clear conscious again.

That is not a particularly helpful message from their part. He quit the number one team in the middle of the season because of practice numbers and some challenges from the coach? Piss off, all of them. I don't buy their story for a second Barnes wouldn't meet with them and that he didn't "believe" in him.

What? He's playing well and Barnes doesn't want to play him because...? He doesn't want a player who will help the team, and him, win? Bulls-t. Good riddance.

We lost Tobe because of Carr? Bring back Tobe next year.

Pathetic. He gets a freak injury that could happen to anyone playing for any team so his “circle” decides he shouldn’t fulfill his commitment to the team.

His "circle" sound like a collective azzhole. Pun intended. He ca lick my cinnamon ring clean and kick rocks all the way to thumb ligament hell (IYKYK).

The full story? If it’s as gnarly and distasteful as presented above, I doubt the public gets the “full story”.

I’m just really pissed off about this. It sucks. This team has a chance to win a national championship but can’t catch a single break with injuries and now this happens.

On the bright side....we don't have to worry about shrinking the roster! I will say that injuries can happen to anyone but our our starting 5 plus Gainey, Phillips and Dubar is a hell of a top 8 and very versatile. Boswell should be back early in league play and I like what I've seen from his physicality, aggression and defense.

No room for any of our guys having injuries that cause much missed PT, especially in SECT. I would almost play walk-on and backups in our first round SECT game and tell the backups not to play very hard. If we are firmly on the 1/2 line then no benefit to SECT and too many possible negatives. At least our 3 main bigs that can play the 5 are all athletic body types who are long, wiry and strong and those type of guys tend to have less chances for lower body injuries than bigs built like Estrella.

Anybody can turn an ankle and foul trouble could hurt us but we have a very athletic roster and Mashack & Dubar are versatile enough to help in a pinch. Would like to see us take a flyer on a mid-season guy like Vescovi for depth.....maybe a big and a wing, especially if you think they can possibly contribute but I at least take them for the extra fouls.

This. Sucks.

I imagine he makes the move now rather than at year's end to preserve his shot at a medical redshirt, but man...playing time wasn't going to be an issue if he stuck it out. This seems incredibly selfish.

Maybe he's just gonna train for the draft being a future lottery pick and all. 🙄

Blew an opportunity to show what he could do and improve NIL value for the teams that want him after the season. Obviously, he doesn't feel like he could develop his game into Knecht of Lanier level or he would have stuck around. Seems like an immature kid getting bad advice from "his circle" and probably being tampered with. Wouldn't surprise me if he ended up at Auburn or a bottom half SEC program.

I don't doubt this might be part of the family mindset. End of the day Barnes is also the same coach had ZZ join in August then back up pg and major contributor by start of his freshman season. Barnes has never been shy of types of players that get playing time and demonstrate it in practice.

It sounds like Carr and his family had much different inflated belief in themselves than the coaches. If they felt so aggrieved would have been more mature to leave before the season.
