Can Bruce Pearl bring UT basketball a national title?

Sure you can...just ask Arkansas....its not so much a system...but its executing the system you have...and similar to football it has A LOT to do with spacing and mismatches.....BP is as good an "in game" coach as I have seen....Of course he can bring a NC to Tennessee...boy, we are getting bored in the dead zone before two a days...

Awesome, 1 out of about 60 champions. And they didn't run a crap offense like Pearl had before.

And about the bold: He's pretty good, but not that.

Imo its not a specific system that is the key. Its making sure its the "right" system for personel.

If that system is his garbage controlled-chaos crap, then no, he can't.
Need I remind you that Arkansas won a national title playing that controlled chaos crap. It's all about the players buying into the defensive end of it. Let him get the talent and he will win a championship.

Have any teams since 1993 won it playing that style?

how many years does he get to "get the talent"?

also it's funny that his most successful year was one where we learned to play some half-court ball

I do not know if this is a serious question but it does make me laugh.

Only complete idiots criticized Pearl when he first came for missing over and over when he tried to bring in top players. He was coming from UWM and he had a total of NO NBA players whom he had mentored.

He still has some struggles in that area, but Pearl could well put together from 2010-12 3 of the top 5 classes talent wise in the history of UT basketball.

If you are questioning Pearl as a recruiter at this point you are beclowning yourself.

Arkansas played the 1-2-1-1 and had no post presence on offense? Oh, wait. They didn't and they had Corliss Williamson.

I think that's all that really needs to be said. To win several good games in a row in tournaments, you have to be able to get baskets in the half-court when you need them, and you have to be able to get stops in the half-court when you need them.

There are plenty of examples of teams in the past that pressed and ran and had success, but all of them could do those two things as well. Before this year, UT's recent failings in tourneys were largely the result of not being able to do those things.

well if anyone's an expert....

and I wasn't questioning his recruiting but saying "give him time" about a coach that's been here for 5 years is just a silly statement

and that was my main complaint with CBP. I loved seeing that he could get away from his regular stuff and actually coach these guys to get stuff done in the half-court when it matters.

Next up: free throws :p

That's one team. And they also didn't run a crap offense like Pearl had for 4 1/2 years.

Other than Chris Jones(who still isn't signed yet) he still hasn't brought in a fully capable PG or high-caliber C (Wayne came in as a PF who became a C). I still have some doubt.

Not really. He brought in Tobias to be the next Tyler Smith. Other than that....what big names does he have signed?

He still hasn't recruited a very capable PG. He still hasn't put in any of his recruits in the league and it's been five years. His "big-time" recruit before Tobias is a big-time bust. Brian Williams hadn't done crap before the NCAA Tourney. He still is not a great recruiter.

I swear, this system argument will get discussed and butchered as long as Pearl is at UT. I'm tired of the faulty logic against the "controlled chaos" style of Pearl. First of all, this "crap offense" has been the highest scoring offense in the SEC much of the time since Pearl arrived. Secondly, the UT teams under Pearl haven't ever played the "40 Minutes of Hell" style pressing defense. As often as not, the press has been lifted after one pass or the press is merely a token press in order to disrupt tempo or create a false sense of security for the offense in order to have an effective press late in the game.

As it has been shown, this style UT used more often in Pearl's first three years can lead to success and will with higher calibur players that we are recruiting.
