Without invoking the phrase "there ought to be laws about...", can someone walk me through what a free market solution to (specifically) school shootings might look like? How would a company or partnership of several companies attack the problem in a way that benefits everyone, including their share holders? What if an innovative thinker like an Elon Musk were to try and tackle this problem? Where would he start? New technology always seems to be an avenue for solving emerging problems. What about an overhaul of school architectural design practices?

I don’t necessarily want all this, but think you would solve most locally.

Hire security personnel/firm for your school. Additionally all assignments where writing is involved are done on school issued platforms that have software that flag phrases deemed concerning “I’m gonna kill everyone” “I want to die”.

Also, shut all personal phones down at school. To close off back channel communications. Install DM system for your school issued systems, again monitoring for phrases with software.

The easy answer seems to be private schools, responsible for their own security. Schools with low security scores are going to be less attractive than those with higher, similar to academics or athletics or whatever.

The other free market would be pairing more schools with various businesses for training. Could possibly work for high school, not sure about middle or elementary.

Bullet proof classroom doors, automated locking system, cameras and qualified personnel watching the cameras.

Not free market, but pairing them with retirement homes/senior facilities could help. Wouldnt do it with assisted living or hospice. But it would provide a whole bunch of eyes on the kids and going on. And it would help the seniors feel more connected, and for those with broken homes it could provide a bit more parenting. Direct contact would have to be monitored of course.

Generally in architecture/planning eyes, and light, and access = security, better than anything else architecturally. Typically the more active people the better. Schools are typically remote islands locked away from everything else. Making them easier targets because normal people dont go there.

Again a step or two from the free market idea but pairing them with churches. Again this introduces other risks that have to be monitored, but when was the last time a religious school was shot up?

Anything is going to have drawbacks, and require change. And people arent willing to accept real change.

I honestly don't care, but for God's sake please try SOMETHING. Doing nothing obviously isnt the solution.

Give parents vouchers and be able to choose schools. More charter and private schools will surface with a better income stream, which will have better security and presumably spending habits. It'll either extinct the public schools or improve them.

More charter and private schools can also have a smaller class, better for the kids.

And guard towers for when the kids are outside for recess?
You don’t need towers with proper surveillance. My children went to a private school that had all those security measures in place and practiced locking it down when the kids were not there. And it looks no different than any other school in the area.

The Chattanooga terror attack started less than 2 miles from the school which was in complete lockdown less than 5 minutes after the first shot was fired.
making schools a hard target can be accomplished without it looking and feeling like a prison. AND unlike anything else being suggested, it will actually prevent tragedy

Private schools don’t seem to have these issues

The left is fighting charter schools hard. It becomes harder to indoctrinate kids having those around.

At home learning. I don't believe that is the answer, but to your question that would be the safest route moving forward.

Unless the shooter is inside. And then you gave them a fortress to defend with isolated hostages with no way out. And most of the school shooting only seem to start in the school, so the lockdown protocols arent going to achieve the desired result.

This texas one seems to be the exception, starting elsewhere and ending up at the school.
