This is a coach that 'gets it.'

I have a feeling that players will play hard for Butch and staff.

He's done everything right so far.

Jones Hosts VFLs In New Football Center - Tennessee

How can you not love what Coach Jones is doing. He is making it a very strong priority to rebuild this program from the inside out in all ways. I wonder if James Berry and Todd Kelly was there they have family member that Coach Jones REALLY REALLY needs to get to know if you get my drift. GO Vols :wink2:

This is what I just read--don't know how true it is:

Tennessee Football News:

Well, this comes from the former players I know. Dooley put in a rule that any former player wanting to come back to visit had to not only call and make an appointment but had to actually fill out a piece of paper and have it approved by Dooley himself. He didn't let any of them come to practice like they had been able to under Fulmer. Pretty much none of the former players have even seen the new complex. One of the craziest stories I was told was that one of the equipment managers found some things of a former player while cleaning out one of the old closets and Dooley wouldn't even let this equipment manager contact this player to let him know that he had them. Dooley wanted complete control over everyone and as soon as coach Jones was hired this Equipment Manager was able to call and return the things that were found to the player.
i know it makes no difference now, but i would be curious to know just how bad a guy Dooley was at UT.

Yeah, I am happy that he has embraced the program and seems to really be rallying the former players. But it still doesn't mean anymore than Dooley's orange pants, if it doesn't help us win. We'll see.

Just judging what I've seen so far - I like what he's doing with the alumni. Not so much with the assistant coach hirings.

I don't think you can equate this with the orange pants. Rallying the former players can have a tangible effect on recruiting. Getting them to help spread the word and build the brand back up is important.

Well it's early yet, for one thing, to go all gung ho. The second being, we have been snookered twice. Ya know that old saying..." fool me once, shame on me..." applies here. People are naturally skeptical.

Time will tell, but this is an encouraging start.

Cannot agree more....and even more sad is the former VOLS have had to wait three years to be welcomed back after what they did for UT. And I bet CBJ felt like a kid at a toy store surrounded by all those VOLS.

For people like myself, it's not that we don't support coach Jones, it's we're waiting to see what the final product is going to look like.

From what I've see so far, he's a vast improvement over Dooley and has pushed all the right buttons and said all the right things off the field, but until I see what our recruiting class looks like and how the team responds on the field next year, I'll hold off on the undying support. I'll also say that getting former players involved was a very smart move. Something that Dooley never did for whatever reason.

I guess my biggest sticking point with coach Jones at this point is can he coach and win against Saban, Richt, Miles, Spurrier and Muschamp and do it on a consistent basis? He has proven himself in the MAC and Big East, now can he do it against these other top coaches that have already proven that they can get it done in the SEC? Sumlin showed last year that he could get it done, now it's CBJ's turn.

I think it goes without saying that we all hope that he can, but until he actually has, then there is no proof. At least not at the highest level of college football.

Depends on your definition of "consistent basis" is. UT had a coach who went to 3 SECCGs in his last 8 years but had 2 losing seasons during that span. Up and down but winning his share of games.

At this point in the cycle of SEC football, no one is going to beat Saban and Miles on a consistent basis. However, I think any of us would love to be going to the SEC Championship Game once every 3 years and take our chances once we got there.

All of this to say: Give Coach Jones a chance and don't put unrealistic expectations on him over the next 2 or 3 years. Between Kiffin and Dooley, this program has a long way to go to get back where its been.

The key word is "can". Results are everything. If it doesn't help recruiting or, more importantly, lead to wins, then it doesn't mean anything.

Not trying to be negative. I like Butch Jones. I think he will be good here. That said, the last guy got praised alot for stuff he did and said off the field too. Didn't mean anything because we still lost. Just trying to be a voice of caution here.

When you have some 5 star sons and 5 star brothers coming out of high school it is great we are getting former letterman involved. Wasn't it true you had to get Dooleys permission to come to practice(Lettermen)

I like what CBJ is saying and doing in such a short time so far.

I will support him, his coaches and our players no matter what because I am a REAL Tennessee Vols fan and have supported all our coaches and players for 50 years and supporting the program no matter what the record turns out to be is what real fans do.

THINK about this...CBJ is our HC and he does have a 6 YEAR contract and I doubt there will be anymore buyouts for at least 4 or 5 years if then so what else can we do but support CBJ and whoever he has on his staff?

Some on here need to become realistic instead of being all about what THEY WANT.

It's not realistic to expect a great recruiting class in the 1st or 2nd year of a new coach and people that know and understand the recruiting cycle know this.

Recruiting a solid class to fill the NEEDS of our team takes 2 YEARS or longer to evaluate and find top players that you want for your type of O and D systems and then to send letters, make phone calls, go visit games, visit the kids and their parents at their home and to rebuild solid friendships with all the high school coaches and their staffs.

Many top kids start gewtting letters and spoken with in their freshman and Sophmore years to try and build a solid relationship with them early on so they know, like and feel comfortable with the Vols coaches by NSD.

Many top kids will be invited to Summer camps to see and learn more about the kids and so the kids can see the campus early on and get to know all the coaches better.

Recruiting is a very long and tough process because coaches from all the other schools are doing the same things.

It's not very realistic to think our new coaches will have a great season in year 1 or 2 either because we're going to have new O and D systems for our players to learn and try to execute against the top teams in the country that have been in the same systems for several years.

CBJ also will NOT have the kids recruited and working in HIS systems that he wants to start showing a solid growth of knowledge and experience for at least 2 or 3 years so we really won't have a solid track record to see what the upswing and potential is for another 3 years at least.

Most here on VN always OVERexpect and then they're letdown because what THEY WANT isn't what happened at the end of the season so they cry, whine and complain nonstop like a baby here on VN and that DOES hurt our recruiting efforts as has been proven on here several times.

MZTERRY already told us there's a very good football player down in her area that we were recruiting but when the kid and his parents cane here to VN to read and try to learn more about Tennessee football they were totally turned OFF by all the hate, bashing of our players and totally negative BS that they found right here on VN that the kid and his parents took Tennessee OFF their list of potential schools that he was interested in doing more research on or taking a visit to see in person.

MZTERRY and her son, the CROOMSTER, has worked hard to try and explain the negative garbage and all the good things about Tennessee to this kid and his parents and supposedly they have Tennessee back on their top 5 list of schools again.

CBJ is our HC and we have ZERO other options for at least 4 or 5 years so STOP all the hate and negative garbage here on VN and UNITE and just support all our coaches, players and our footVol program like all real fans should be doing.

You got your wish and got rid of Dooley so start finding good, positive things to say about our players and coaches instead of always trying to find anything that you don't like to cry and whine about.

We're fans and many of us take our Vols football very seriously but the reality is that this is a GAME for our fun and entertainment on Saturdays but to these coaches and most importantly to these kids that play football for our Vols this is THEIR LIVES and their futures and they take everything said about them and their coaches very seriously too.

I'm all Vol all the time!!!

Losing football games hurt our recruiting much more than any message board could. Real fans don't post walls of text, IMO.
