CBJ Monday Presser

Butch has recruited extremely well. It's okay. You can say it. I won't tell anyone. :)

This year's class is most important. Without a successful class this year, he may not make it long enough to see too many players from next year's class develop. That's just the reality of college football in a big-time program.

I have said all along that CBJ is doing well in recruiting, very well. Is it because he is a great recruiter or because of all the legacies??? Either way this class looks exceptional if they can keep them together.

But I think that CBJ gets 2 more years unless they go 2 and 10 next year. So the next class will be interesting to see how it develops. This being said I am not seeing much, if any, cultural change in the all important wins and losses columns.

I will be very interested to see how this recruiting class finishes on signing day as well as next years class considering that next year's class will not be anchored by numerous legacies.

I don't believe I would have chosen the word "anchored" especially this week!

You ever notice that a winning coach doesn't say that much, but a losing coach always has a ton of cliche's?

You haven't heard Saban's pressers have you? All you really get is "its a part of the process". I bet he says that 10 times a press conference.

I guess I just don't know why you care about speeches or what he's supposed to say after a loss like that. If you've got a winning speech that will make me feel warm and fuzzy after that debacle, you may be in the wrong profession (assuming you aren't a speech writer currently).

Put another way, when you're critiquing the press conference after a terrible loss, I think you're just looking for something to be upset about. Which is fine, I suppose. I just don't really understand it.

I'm by no means the ultimate authority and I don't think we've reached our full potential. I like a lot of what I've seen from Jones and the black eye of losing Saturday isn't enough to put him in the red in my book, not yet anyway.

I think Vandy would have won by more if not for the turnovers, but both teams turned the ball over and I don't want to get into the debate of forced turnovers versus unforced.

I just don't believe Vandy is a more talented football team from top to bottom than Tennessee. That's just my opinion. The game was at Neyland Stadium and we had a lot to play for. Tennessee should have been better prepared and they came out flat, after having two weeks to prepare.

I put a lot of that on the staff. It doesn't mean I'm not still in their corner. It happens to all coaches at times and I'm sure it won't be the last time our staff loses a game they are supposed to win. But I think they deserve some blame for this one. You just can't lose to Vandy at home, under any circumstances.

Freak

Its not that I am looking for anything to critique, there is plenty of that in the replay of the last four games.

What I dont like seeing is a coach that isn't owning his or his teams shortcomings and speaking in vague terms of improvement coming off yet another loss in which there is clearly a lack of improvement.

Everyone likes to throw around the term culture change. That not only applies to the players, it should apply for the coaches.

With Fulmer, it was talking about magic dust.

Kiffin was terrible in interviews but would actually get into the nuts and bolts of what went wrong.

Dooley had his little homespun sayings and aww shucks attitude to blow things off.

Butch talks in vague terms about improvement and backs off his own expectations of a bowl.

If I want to hear spin, damage control, and catch phrases, Ill turn on CNN.

What I would like to hear from my Vols football coach for a change is some straight talk of what went wrong and what he intends to do to fix it.

Define cultural change.

Honest question: in how many games this year was Tennessee the more talented team on the field?

CBJ Monday Presser:

"We are looking to be 1 & 0 going into the off season."

Interesting.

"You have to work on your "craft" at all times"

Never heard football called a craft.

"I see tremendous strides and progression in many areas."

'Success isn't totally measured by a bowl game."

"I see the progress everyday; sometimes that is not measured by wins and losses."

:)

Talk amongst yourselves.

Ooooh a trouble maker tonight eh.

I'm hearing this from a lot of people, about Butch not saying the right things. Personally, I don't see why it matters. What do you want him to say? It's coach speak and when you have to speak to the media multiple times per week, you get some of that. Dude is probably all out of things to say after seven losses.

Have you listened to Butch all year, because I've heard him take responsibility multiple times. He's taken blame and detailed issues and insisted changing those issues starts with him and his staff.

Butch was pissed and disappointed after the Vandy game. He had a completely different aura than I've seen. It wasn't the same type of speech he's given before. He was extremely upset and let down. He actually snapped at one of the media in the room and it was the first time I've seen that from him.

Butch is a competitor, I think. He doesn't like to lose. It's been a long season and he's had his first taste of what it's like to coach big-time football at Tennessee. It hasn't gone as well as he hoped and he doesn't have the talent he needs. Most importantly, he needs to recruit exceptionally well in order to turn things around and make up ground on the SEC---a league where nearly every team recruits exceptionally well.

If Butch Jones spends more than 5 seconds thinking about whether or not his press conference was a hit with fans who want him to grovel for forgiveness, he's wasting time that could be better used elsewhere. He lost to Vandy. Nothing more needs to be said.

Fact is, this team went downhill offensively when Worley went down. It's clear his last full game was the peak of the season. It's the reality of football and it happens, but playing a fourth-string true freshman quarterback probably isn't what Butch had in mind at this point.

Of course. I thought we had a good shot at going 7-5 if we played lights out or 6-6, if the breaks went against us. Going 6-6 with a bowl win would have been a promising year for this team and set CBJ up nicely for next year. The poor performance and lack of motivation post-Bama has been increasingly concerning, even though Mizzou and Auburn are at a different level. But we should've been more competitive. Vandy-- well, there just isn't any excuse.

I'm not saying we should let anybody go. I just think CBJ should look objectively at areas of opportunity and make strategic upgrades, should they present themselves. For starters, I think we should consider working with an outside QB coach. Other schools do. And we should evaluate special teams. And I think we should take a hard look at our coordinators and see if we can bring anybody in to round out our team or add outside perspective. Working together for a long time has advantages... and it can close you off to better possibilities. All JMO.

Which six or seven teams were we more talented than? Honest question.

There's no excuse for losing to Vandy. Ever. But if I were making excuses for when this team started regressing, it coincides with the time we were forced to play a true freshman at quarterback. Agree?

I'm never opposed to looking to upgrade coordinators or staff but I don't think you can run someone off just because someone better is available. Butch has 3-6 years with his coordinators, if I recall, and I think they deservemore than one season to prove themselves. After next year, if we still see glaring issues, I might be with you. But right now, I've seen both good and bad from this staff and I think making a move now would be premature.

I think he like us expected to be going to a bowl. I'm sure he's working on changing the culture on the hill. I hope he keeps this class together it seems these young men got a lot of trust in him for some reason. He did beat a top ten team, I hoping for the best maybe a couple of good classes will get us turned around. VFL.....

Have they said what was going on with Palardy? All year he had played great, so the commentators say he is our most consistent player and he plays awful. Was he hurting?

A few weeks ago he was having back spasms. Said the trainers did a good job getting him ready for the game (can't remember which game that was.) We wondered what was going on with him as well. The wind was bad, but I don't know if that played a role or not.

Merely excuses and coachspeak to try to appease a fan base that rightly knows we should have shown a little bit more improvement on the field than Butch and his so called "greatest staff" were able to produce this year. Excuses and coachspeak don't cut the mustard.

Either produce adequate tangible improvement next year on the field or be gone because we don't have any more time to waste on subpar Dooleyesque coaching performance.

We need more than just a really good recruiter. We need a coach and staff that can coach players up and inspire them to overachieve. If Butch can't show that he can do that, then he ain't the right guy for this job.

Oh God this guy again. You really have to learn to control your emotions. It's tough at times I know, but you can do it

It looked like the footballs were filled with sand on Sat. night. I figured the weather was the reason. Didn't Vandy's kicker come up short on a 42 yard fg? I think Palardy's 1st kick was tipped, wasn't it?

anchored ...as if the rest of the recruits are a boat that will float away without the legacy guys

It seems to me that Worley was progressing as evidenced by the UGA and USCe games ..then he got hurt . Offensive point production has been in the toilet since

Not sure why this mystifies anyone ..both college and NFL are so QB'centric now. Any team that wins anything anymore has a high production QB in the mix . Dobbs is not that guy ...YET.

True...but realistically, what else are they supposed to say?

The truth, which is basically the following:

Folks, we simply didn't get it done showing enough improvement as a team and a staff this year and that is my responsibility as head coach. We are going to take a hard look at how we can can do things better going forward. We will evaluate our offensive scheme in the off season and possibly make some changes. We will evaluate our entire staff as well. Obviously we need to do better coaching special teams also. The bottom line is, we are gonna do whatever it takes this offseason to ensure that from this point forward, we are showing adequate tangible improvement at every point in the process of re-establishing this program as a perennial Top 15 program.

That, or something like it in terms of being accountable for underperforming, is what the man should have said.

We will just agree to disagree. And I am not saying that his press conference needed to be a "hit" among fans.

You're right, that doesn't matter.

What does matter is him setting the example for his team of accountability and responsibility for the product on the field which he has failed to do IMO for the last month.
