CBJ: "Most Excited I've Ever Been In Off Season"

If we could mix and match, I would take the '11 defensive staff with this HC and O staff.

Would you agree that the ability of Jancek to coach a championship level D in the SEC is VERY much in question?

I would though not quite to extent that you do. I tend to give him or the whole coaching staff in general a bit of a pass for this season because I feel the first season for any staff isn't enough to make a judgement off of. If we are still in the same boat next season then I will be much more critical of this staff.

I would do that if the players were in position and well prepared and just getting beat physically. I might even be more inclined if he didn't have an SEC history.

I don't think I will be more critical of the staff in '14. Obviously I am not buying Jancek at this point. But overall the team loses alot of experienced talent and replaces it with either less talent or less experience. Dooley's last two classes plus the mess Jones had to clean up for the '13 class leaves a gap in the roster.

I think the O gets a little better depending on what happens at QB. If a clear starter emerges out of the Spring then I think we'll see very good progress. I like the guys coming back on the OL better than the guys leaving for many reasons. The one concern and its big is LT. RB should be solid. TE should firm up. WR's should be better.

The D will get worse unless the coaching improves and guys develop VERY well. There's nothing left on the DL. It will help if AJ comes back. Maggitt is a great player but not really a speed upgrade over Brewer or Sapp. JRM IMO will be a stud. The secondary should improve just because of experience and depth if they can resolve the issues at nickel OR scheme differently.

I have said for a long time that 7 wins would have been an affirmation of the staff this fall. I am on record saying that 6 would do the same next fall. Anything better... and I'll feel pretty good about them.

Watch the D stats and especially scoring. Over/under 26 ppg will probably tilt the season one way or the other assuming conservative gains on O.

I agree. By the same boat I meant being 5-7 again. But I think we will get to 6-6 next year. We will be young next year but be better in terms of over all talent. Whether that will translate to more wins remains to be seen.

If you keep trying to convince yourself that the overall talent on the field is going to be better... you are setting yourself up for disappointment. You may be able to argue that the natural talent and athleticism on the roster will improve.... This class will have some impact players but not as many as UT loses to graduation. The vast majority of the incoming Fr will need a year or two of development before their talent can really show dividends on the field.

If you want to hang hopes on something... it has to be development of the current players, time in the system, and improved coaching. Expecting a single class of 30 Fr regardless of how talented they are to make a previously Sr laden team more competitive in the SEC is WAY too much. It is not a reasonable expectation based on history across the SEC.

Like... Lol right?

Jury is still out on Butch. But if you for one minute believe that our gameplan had even an iota of thought, then you're nuts.

Ronny Swanson, have you met Ron Swanson in the recruiting thread? You guys would hit it off.

He's about the biggest sunshine Pumper on VN.

I was just looking at the roster on UTsports.com -- it's halfway updated, minus recent departees, but not yet adding the incoming -- and I am struck by how many guys we should have next year who have had a red-shirt season at some point. More redshirt experienced guys than we have had in a long, long time, maybe ever.

Ronny, that would have to be one heck of a game plan to disguise all the weaknesses that were blatantly evident on this team. Do not know if Coach Jones will ultimately be successful or not, but to judge the staff on this year's team? Not bashing any of the players, but name one who would have started on any of Coach Fulmer's better teams. Talent is essential in any program in order to be successful. Good coaching is also essential, but average to good coaching with average to good talent will more times than not lose to average to good coaching with great talent.

It wouldn't have taken too much brilliance to cover up or protect some of them.

The coaching was not good for much of the season and especially on the D side of the ball. You can rationalize all you like... that's a fact that won't go away.

While I will agree that some of the coaching was not at all what we as VOL fans would like or expect to see, there were talent deficiencies that were impossible to hide. The talent has to improve in order for us to be competitive in the SEC. I agree that the jury is still out on some of the assistants.

Why let bad coaches hang around?

No offense but as a card carrying alumni, I will accept professional experienced coaches making decisions on their staffs effectiveness over anyone who posts on here. That said, everyone keep posting, it literally cracks me up. Overall, this place is better than a Zany's and no 2 drink minimum.

Coaching was better than play execution. Both will get a lot better in 2014.

dude he lost to vandy... tired of the excuses just recruit n win.. all the
other chatter is just that chatter..has zero meaning..

u lose to vandy n u r on notice... n he did not make a bowl which kiff n dools accomplished.

so excuse some of us for not being sunshine sheep:cray:

So was Neyland on notice in 1926? How about when he tied Vandy in 1927?

If you've been in any workplace you know that talk is cheap. That being said, Butch is getting some players in here, which Dooley had a problem doing. I'm cautiously optimistic about the future, but it's not because of words.

Last time I checked, Kiffin went to and lost the Peach Bowl to Virginia Tech.

Disagree. Both were bad on D. I'd agree that WR execution was a major factor in the O's problems.

I hope they get better but I saw little from the staff and almost nothing from the DC to suggest the 2013 was "coached up". I am still very much in "show me" mode. I simply don't see ANY evidence to earn the trust so many of you are giving for nothing.

But part of the problem is that was two years ago and those players have been through two HCs and DCs since then and had been under Wilcox for two years. And I remember plenty of people complaining about Wilcox while he was here. It's not like he's some world beater at DC. But I guess those players were fast enough to lose to Kentucky without a quarterback.

Edit: my point being we are slow right now. Going through so many coaching systems in such a short time will likely have players out of position and thinking to much or playing slower than their actual speed.
If you are blaming the defense for that Kentucky loss, you are a lost cause.

When Mizzou out performs UT in football you know you have problems. Mizzou is a bb school with a fb problem.
