Would you agree that the ability of Jancek to coach a championship level D in the SEC is VERY much in question?
I would though not quite to extent that you do. I tend to give him or the whole coaching staff in general a bit of a pass for this season because I feel the first season for any staff isn't enough to make a judgement off of. If we are still in the same boat next season then I will be much more critical of this staff.
I would do that if the players were in position and well prepared and just getting beat physically. I might even be more inclined if he didn't have an SEC history.
I don't think I will be more critical of the staff in '14. Obviously I am not buying Jancek at this point. But overall the team loses alot of experienced talent and replaces it with either less talent or less experience. Dooley's last two classes plus the mess Jones had to clean up for the '13 class leaves a gap in the roster.
I think the O gets a little better depending on what happens at QB. If a clear starter emerges out of the Spring then I think we'll see very good progress. I like the guys coming back on the OL better than the guys leaving for many reasons. The one concern and its big is LT. RB should be solid. TE should firm up. WR's should be better.
The D will get worse unless the coaching improves and guys develop VERY well. There's nothing left on the DL. It will help if AJ comes back. Maggitt is a great player but not really a speed upgrade over Brewer or Sapp. JRM IMO will be a stud. The secondary should improve just because of experience and depth if they can resolve the issues at nickel OR scheme differently.
I have said for a long time that 7 wins would have been an affirmation of the staff this fall. I am on record saying that 6 would do the same next fall. Anything better... and I'll feel pretty good about them.
Watch the D stats and especially scoring. Over/under 26 ppg will probably tilt the season one way or the other assuming conservative gains on O.
I agree. By the same boat I meant being 5-7 again. But I think we will get to 6-6 next year. We will be young next year but be better in terms of over all talent. Whether that will translate to more wins remains to be seen.
It wouldn't have taken too much brilliance to cover up or protect some of them.Ronny, that would have to be one heck of a game plan to disguise all the weaknesses that were blatantly evident on this team.

The coaching was not good for much of the season and especially on the D side of the ball. You can rationalize all you like... that's a fact that won't go away.
Why let bad coaches hang around?

Coaching was better than play execution. Both will get a lot better in 2014.
If you are blaming the defense for that Kentucky loss, you are a lost cause. But part of the problem is that was two years ago and those players have been through two HCs and DCs since then and had been under Wilcox for two years. And I remember plenty of people complaining about Wilcox while he was here. It's not like he's some world beater at DC. But I guess those players were fast enough to lose to Kentucky without a quarterback.
Edit: my point being we are slow right now. Going through so many coaching systems in such a short time will likely have players out of position and thinking to much or playing slower than their actual speed.
