CBJ: "Vols Long Way From Finding Starter"

FWIW after watching both Dobbs and Ferg throw during a few of the initial fall practices, Ainge said on his show that he was much more impressed with Ferg. Up until that point I had assumed Dobbs would have a leg up because of his playing style. Sounds like Riley is the real deal!!

I think it's very possible to see 2 QBs before the seasons over with, but I sense Jones is smart and won't flip flop like Spurrier. The starter will have to play really bad and the bAckup show a lot of progression in practice. I think Worley will start, because I think tie goes to experience. Yet I don't think the backup (unless it's Worley) will get thrown to the woods against a good team he will start against a weaker opponent (altho UGAly defense could make them look like 1st rounders).

TOLD YOU!

All this josh Dobbs crap, and I've always said Ferguson is the better if the two, and was laughed at... Where is my ******* cookie?

It's in your web browser. See, when you log onto VN, it places a tracking cookie on your computer. I think with Firefox you can go into the PRIVACY dialog box and remove a cookie for your pleasure. :)

Now at the risk of having my head removed with a rusty saw, here's my take. Seriously, after reading a bit on RiFer, he seems be another Tyler Bray, hopefully without the attitude. He has the same gunslinger mentality, the same strong arm, perhaps too much trust in his arm and at times sends throws he shouldn't. Yet can place the ball in really tight spots. Big pluses: Apparently, he does slightly better at checking down his options. Thusfar, it seems he is very coachable.

If it's close I think they'll use the warm up games as an opportunity to play 2 guys and decide from there or at least give the #2 experience. Certainly by OR if a guy is getting shellacked and any of them could you might see the #2 guy (maybe Riley) come in after it's a blow out and then never give the job back.
Either way in the SEC you need a solid backup QB so that race is important regardless who the starter is. In my mind that's what this praise is related too. Jones knows he's one play away from possibly having to start a Freshman. Regardless how good Worley is.

Butch Jones knows who will start the Austin Peay game.

EXACTLY! Folks he's just doing this to keep the QB's competing with each other at as high a level as possible. He'll name the starter at the beginning of the week they specifically start prepping for Austin Peay. Like I said before, all you have to do is look at who's getting the lion's share of work with the 1's and that tells you who the starter will be.

Tennessee Vols' Riley Ferguson impressing Butch Jones (with video) | timesfreepress.com

Are they just trying to light a fire under Worley?

KNOXVILLE -- Tennessee made its quarterbacks live for contact during Friday's practice, but even that couldn't slow Riley Ferguson.

The freshman has played well enough to split second-team reps with Nathan Peterman this week, and first-year coach Butch Jones volunteered his praise for Ferguson's Friday performance.

The coach also reminded everyone to stop before they start.

"The individual who stepped up was Riley Ferguson," Jones said. "Don't write about it. He's not the starting quarterback. We don't have a starting quarterback right now, so don't put words in my mouth.

"I thought he showed some poise. The thing I liked about him was his pocket presence. He doesn't get rattled, and he made some big throws."

Exactly two weeks until game day and Butch still doesn't have a starting QB. That sure says a lot about Worley.

Does it? maybe CBJ is a master tactician. First, the prospect he might pull whoever starts in favor of another QB makes it harder to prep for Tennessee. Second, when you don't name a starter until practically game time, it forces your QBs to be sharp by maintaining the competition and thus making them better QBs. If a game situation really does require replacing the QB, you will have one or more who causes very little if any quality drop off. I think he did the same thing in Cincinnati.

Now, what I think I see and readily admit I don't know a darn thing is this. CBJ probably sees Dobbs as the better option QB, especially when we opt to push the ball down field by running. He probably sees Worley as his prototype pro style QB when he needs a competent game manager. Peterman is his option QB when he wants runs and throws mixtures. Ferguson, when teams have trouble keeping up with our WRs. The fact that Worley is the primary QB working with the 1's now, especially at this point, makes it premature to continue writing him off.

"Hmmmm, if I stir up a little quarterback controversy, betcha a few thousand who were thinking about maybe coming to the open practice will now just have to. And if I tell the media not to write about it, you just know it will be a top story."

Butch gets marketing.

What schools were recruiting Ferguson the hardest? I would think the Carolina ACC connections would have been on him pretty hot.
