Narratives... like me posting last summer that he was on the hot seat? You mean "narratives" like that?

BTW, I was attacked from all sides over that informed opinion, and guess what? LSU should have fired
his a$$, he's out of his element.

So Miles is "out of his element", eh?

-he's 112-32 at LSU, in by far the most difficult division/conference in the country

-at LSU, he's recorded 9 top 20 finishes in 11 seasons, including 5 top 10 finishes.

-at LSU, he has a national title and has taken two teams to a national title game.

-at LSU, his average 247 recruiting class ranking over 12 seasons including 2016 is #7 in the country.

Yeah, that guy has no idea what he's doing.

I totally agree with you. I couldn't believe they had him on the firing block. If they hadn't won that one game they were going to fire him probably the next day or following Monday. Would have been a huge mistake on the part of LSU. Miles is a really good coach period.

Dude is unorthodox, he has some "unusual" behaviors....but the numbers don't lie. Also, he was gone had it not been for a popular uprising from the fanbase. If he ever figures out how to develop a quarterback, he'll get another natty IMO.

What's your homer-free argument for Jones?

And I don't mean any snark. There are some on this list I take issue with, so I'm genuinely curious as to your take.

Homer-free, completely subjective, are vegas lines. Every year they publish O/U on win totals for every team in football. Butch is one of the few coaches in cfb that consistently beats expectations. I think that's a pretty good way to measure the quality of a coach - Bill Snyder doesn't have a great shot of a national championship at KState, but he consistently beats expectations throughout his career.

Not only would he been gone if not for the fanbase, he would have been gone if LSU didn't win that game in which they had put him on notice.

I can't remember for the life of me who that game was against though. I know it was an SEC opponent but can't remember which team. Was it the Texas A&M game?

Yeah, Tony, definitely A&M. LSU had three losses in a row (Bama, Arky, Ole Miss), and everyone down there was disgruntled. None quite as much as the wealthy boosters, it turns out, boosters who strong-armed the AD into putting Miles on notice. The fans and players (rightly) responded that that was going TOO far...and then LSU whupped A&M 19-7 in a largely defensive battle. That's when Les got carried off the field like a rock star. Final game of the regular season.

They went on to bury Texas Tech a month later in the Texas Bowl.

You could say that everything that included the word "Texas" (A&M, Tech, Bowl) saved Les' job in 2015.

Brian Kelly? Really? All he's done is win his conference (ahem...) and get embarrassed for being over-hyped.

I think there are two ways of looking at this.

Pros:
Les is a good coach, he is generally a real good guy, the kids love him. He brings a toughness to the team that probably very few coaches do in the NCAA in today's game but he does it without being a jerk to the players or the media or other coaches. He understand the run game probably better then any coach in football, and not just college. His instinct of calling trick plays is probably a few levels above anyone else in the history of the sport.... yes, he has a super great knack of calling them.

Cons:
Can come off as not quite right, although this to me is a positive. Relies on the run game too much, and is reluctant to have the ball in the QBs hands, and in today's game that just isn't always going to result in wins. Has made some questionable hiring choices to go with most pretty good ones..... Crowton was disaster even though he was the OC for the NC, the two headed DC monster was bad, as was the Steele hire. Relies on the trick play to overcome obstacles as a replacement for not putting the pressure on the QB.

He is getting up there in age, I had no problem with them replacing Les this year but I also have no problem with him coming back. A plan needs to be put in place for a new guy at some point. The DC is potentially in a position to ease into that role.

The biggest thing that has hurt Les, is the early NFL draftees. You don't win championships with freshmen.... its not an excuse its just a truth and something that needs to be overcome. This year, the team is still young compare to normal programs but by LSU standards in the last 8 years, they are ancient.

The door is open for a run this year, they probably have the pieces, but they need to get better as well.... Bama does't care about any of this.

People saying Les is/was a bad coach are really not worth the time and really have no idea how hard it is.

I thought it was A&M. And yes, I do remember Miles being carried off the field like they won the national championship. It certainly was a weird scene just for that but winning that game did save his job. The same kind of scene last season with Strong at Texas when they beat was it Oklahoma? I think it was Oklahoma. I know it was a conference foe & a big upset.

They carried him off the field & acted like they won the national title. He was on the hot seat too at that time. They(Texas) still went on to have a bad season though but that one win probably saved Strong at Texas as well.

strangely, even though Strong is only a little over .500 at Texas he has beaten Oklahoma both years.

In my humble opinion Butch winning conference championships in two different conferences is no small thing. It's not like he hasn't been good, it's just that he hasn't won one, yet, here at Tennessee. He will and his body of work leads me to believe that.

A lot of people use the "look what he walked into at UT" as a reason, so you could also use that logic at CMU and UC. Plus, he was only at each place 3 seasons AND half the conference claimed the Big East one of those years.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter where he ranks in a meaningless poll. All that matters is what happens on the field.

Nick Saban's 1st 4 seasons at Michigan St:

1995: 6-5-1
1996: 6-6
1997: 7-5
1998: 6-6

It matters where you're coaching and what you inherited when you got there!

Fact: some people on here are so anxious to look cool for being critical of a Tennessee coach on a Tennessee forum that there is no consistency applied to any logic used at all.

What is the point of ranking coaches? Seems silly to me.

Uh. They do make a lot of money coaching in college these days. So, they release polls like this so us as fans can bash the heck out of them & argue over who's best & who should or shouldn't be there! :p
