CFP Show

Hardly. I’m a Penn State alum who is trying to look at this with an unbiased eye.

Do I think Tennessee is one of the best 4 teams in country? I do.

Do I think Tennessee needs help to get into the college football playoff if they win out and does not control their own destiny? I do.
Tennessee is in as long as they win out

And yes the committee has selected a 1 loss team ahead of an undefeated team - UCF was overlooked twice. I realize they are not part of the top 5 power conferences- but the one year they did beat Auburn who made it to the SEC championship game.

If ESPN considers Tennessee’s loss to Georgia a blowout… then they should also consider Florida’s loss to Tennessee a blowout. Because Florida had no business being in that game at the end and made it close when we had already let our foot off the gas.

But no, ESPN said UT was lucky to beat Florida and Florida may should have won.

And Both of alabamas losses were last second so the committee doesn’t really consider those as losses 😂

From any analysis from any point of view, if Tennessee wins out in successful fashion, it should be in the top four. But that frigging eye test kicks my BVS into high gear.

No one was to Ohio St in 2016 i believe. They lost to Penn St and Penn went on to win the BIG10 butr was left out with two losses and Ohio made the playoffs.
That’s right. I thought Bama got in twice without winning the SEC but maybe they only did it once. Regardless, does anyone know if there were 1-loss P5 champs any of the years where a non-conference champ made it?

OSU was selected in 2016 over the BIG10 Champion Penn State who had two losses. OSU did not even play in their championship game. That was PSU verses Wisconsin.

OSU lost to Penn State in the regular season, their only loss, which is why OSU did not play in the championship game. PSU lost to Pittsburgh and Michigan. This is a very similar situation to what LSU has this year.

PSU won the BIG10 championship but was not selected.

2017 both UGA and Bama were selected. Wisconsin was undefeated going into the championship game and lost to OSU. That loss knocked Wisconsin out of the #4 spot which was taken by a 1 loss non-conference champ Alabama.

Some of the drops out of the top 4 by 1 loss non-conference champions seem to be more related to those teams losing really late - like the last game they play. That probably factors more into why you rarely see two teams from the same conference. If the regular season aligns, the best two teams meet in those championship game. Though it can benefit a team that doesn't play with 1 loss if the team least expected wins.

History seems to indicate that if TCU were to win all the regular season games but lose the championship game - they would not be one of the four because the team they lost to was not one of the top 4.

Don’t know if this was meant for me but OSU did make the playoffs in 2016 without winning their division. PSU won the division and BiG10 but was passed over cause they had two losses.

What We Learned: Ohio State can make CFP without winning its division
Nope, not you.

I was looking back to see if any 1-loss conference champs were left out in favor of a team that didn’t win their conference (excluding Notre Dame of course). I didn’t see any examples of it happening but most years it was pretty clear who should be in. One potential year that Vols fans can draw hope from is one I haven’t actually seen mentioned and that’s 2018. In 2018 a 2-loss UGA finished ahead of 1-loss Big 10 Champion, Ohio State. Now, neither team made the playoff as UGA was 5 and Ohio State 6 but that does show the committee will put a team with a good resume over a P5 champ in the final rankings. UGA even had an extra loss! I know a lot of people think USC would pass us if they ran the table but I don’t see it. We are in as long as we win.

Agree, where a team has jumped over someone ahead of them, historically it seems to be because the team in front lost or they had an impressive win over a higher ranked team.

And then OSU got blown out 31-0 in the playoffs but I digress.
