championship weekend......what say you?

if i were a betting man, i'd take the +7 on the weather alone. but of the two playing, Eli is the one that would scare me the most with turnovers.

the giants secondary is just bad. favre will have to play an awful game to give that game away like that. don't see it happening.

If the Pats win...which they should...then this is definitely championship weekend. If SD wins all bets are off.

but how long can Favre and his team keep going, do they have it in them?

Yes, this 13-3 team who dismantled a good Seattle defense last week - can they keep it going? What is "it" in your statement? They're the 2nd best team left in the playoffs.

The question SHOULD be, can the Giants keep it going?

 it's only been done twice since the wild card came in to play.

It should be a great Sunday.

I may be made out to look like a fool but I think:

Greenbay: 38
NY Giants: 24

New England: 37
Sandiego: 23

I'm hoping it's the Pats vs. The Pack, and Brett Favre shows Tom Brady what a real NFL quarterback should be.

I hope the Pats kill the Chargers and celebrate wildly in an unclassy manner and try to get Phillip Rivers in the Conga line.

It's a win-win with the NFC. Farve is an idol of mine and I think Eli gets to much crap in the media so I could also deal with him getting those demons out.

I just hope the NFC wins the Super Bowl.

You do have a sense of humor....good stuff. :birgits_giggle:

On a side note, I was on espn and the majority of the nation thinks it will be Pats vs. Packers in the Superbowl like most of you. But second place votes came in with Chargers vs. Packers.

You know there comes a point a say screw the TV ratings.

Is already colder than a windy's titty in Green Bay. But they choose this as the late game..as in when the sun goes down and gets even colder. The competition committee should do something about this, there are are alot of elderly people who love the Packers and might catch double pneumonia and die because of this. Because they are not gonna miss the game.

this weekend has in the past been the best NFL weekend of the season. in so many years past, the championship games have been the games that go down in NFL lore. the catch. the drive.

basically, the drama leading up to the super bowl has many times surpassed the biggest stage in the NFL on more than one occasion. Most of us remember the Cowboys/bills routs. the Niners/Broncos rout. the niners/chargers rout. Bears/Pats rout. and so on and so on.

it's only been in the last decade where we've seen "the greatest" super bowls in the modern era. Broncos/Packers, Panthers/patriots, Rams/Titans, Patriots/Rams. we've also been privy to some not so pretty games, either in blow our or close game fashion....Ravens/Giants, Steelers/Seahawks and COlts/Bears.

so knowing what we know now, especially considering the Patriots are in route to another probable rout of their opponent, who ever that may be in from the NFC (i'll let you guess who i think is going to win the AFC championship game), what do we think about this year's championship games?

will we see more drama that this weekend has produced in the past? will some up and comer have an Elway like moment that could define the majority of a career, a la "the drive", or will we see a singular moment in a game by the next "golden boy" a la Montana and "the catch".

the truth is there are two such qb's playing this weekend that could be embraced in that fashion, IF they are able to duplicate or replicate their probable child hood qb heroes antics.

I give you Eli Manning and Phillip Rivers. Eli in my opinion has the opportunity to be this year's John Elway. Not saying Eli plays like John, but here's the set up:

Eli is on the road in a tradition rich stadium in the midwest where it's likely going to snow (remember the dawg pound in Cleveland in the '86 playoffs?) He very well could find himself with the ball in his hands late in the 4th qtr with the game on the line. does he step up and deliver? or does he fall in to the oblivion of what might have been like so many other that have tried before?

as for Phillip Rivers, he's got the role of Joe Montana. Again, not because of the style of play, but because of the set up:

He's from the west coast, and they're playing "the team" of the decade as a decided underdog. the only difference, he won't have the friendly confines of his own Candlestick Park in his back pocket. but looking back on that now famous Cowboys/Niners game in the early, early 80's, the circumstances are the same. a young hungry team facing the team that no one thinks they can beat. can he make "the play" that is the difference between winning and losing?

in any event, for an off season that seems to lack any drama as to the final outcome, i would like to see some of these guys still playing make their name.

every generation of sports fans has defining moments and players that they will always identify with. I had Joe Montana, John Elway, Dan Marino. In my adult life, i've had Brett Favre, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

the only question left to me is "who's next?"

either the incumbents maintain their status quo as the "legend" or legend in making, or a couple of new kids start writing their own chapters.

here's to hoping for some drama, even if it only lasts for a week.
ok, the big game is set. was there any drama? in the first game, it teased us with it. but in the end, when SD had scored 4 times to NE's two times, and NE was still winning, you knew the game was over. the chargers played about as well as they could w/out LT, got the turnovers they needed and kept the ball out of Ne's hands early. but you can't settle for fg's and you can't turn the ball over at all against them. NE played about as bad as i've seen 'em play all year and still won by two possesions. ho hum, oh well...on to the next game......

the NFC side of the equation offered some drama, to say the least. Brett showed why he's going to be a hall of famer, and also why the same guy that has more wins, more td's, more passing yards than anyone in histroy, also has more int's than anyone in history. he took chances. but that's brett favre. would you really want it any other way? but as i stated above, Eli was the qb with the ball in his hands, not once, not twice, but three times with the game on the line under 5 mintues to go and in OT.

When Tynes missed the first fg, i kind of said, well that sucks, but there's still time and to my surprise, the Giants' D played GREAT, secondary included (minus the one 90 yard TD pass:p), so i wasn't worried. they got the ball back with a minute and some change, and Eli led the giants down the field for a chance to win the NFC title. so, just to recap, for dramatic purposes, the giants had already missed a FG that would have given them the lead, dropped a potential TD pass, had a TD run called back on penalty, and here we are with 4 seconds to go and a 37 yard fg attempt for the win.

and tynes missed it bad. real bad. terrible snap and an even worse kick. the shot of the sideline said it all. dejection all around. heads in hands. jaws dropping. disbelief.

there was a part of me though that had to think that there were Buffalo Bills fans everywhere snickering just a little bit, saying to themselves....."how do you like it?".

so we go to OT, and the legend has the ball at home with a trip to the SB in his hands. he's been here before, everyone wants to see him do it and after the previous set of events described above, it seemed as though it was destined for GB to win this game.

and then, just as with the Dallas game the week before, the much maligned Giants' secondary comes thru. they did what no one, self included, thought they could do. they saved the game, and gave Eli another shot. moreover, they gave tynes another shot. allbeit a long shot. they had just shown you the stat. No one had ever made a fg over 40 yards agianst GB in the playoffs at Lambeau. and there you are 47 yards away from Phoenix. and tynes and co. go back out for one more shot. boom. right down the middle. relief. redemption. elation. another manning heading to the Super Bowl.

will this game go down as some other games i mentioned in my original post did? i don't know. but we got drama, even if it was in the not so conventional fashion, so mission accomplished. and Eli at least put himself in the conversation of the who's who of qb's in this day and age.

Congratulations to the giants. your consolation prize is you get to play the Patriots. Again. Good luck with that. I'll be rooting for you. again.

And **NOW** my question would be can the Giants keep it going?? :birgits_giggle:

Very good read though Jake. It was a great game to watch, did not watch all of it due to a finale of another show, but what I did see of it was good stuff. Alot of people wanted to see Favre in this final game this season, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I will be rooting for Brady of course, but if they are to lose, this is the only team I'd want them to lose to because of Eli. Someone made a post in another thread that Eli has made it to the Superbowl quicker than Peyton, is that true?

I think the Superbowl will be a great game, but the pats need to get their act together and come ready to play. I think they will, and well also hope they will.

the pats proved Sunday they don't have to play their best to win, even when the opponent plays well. which is scary.

and yes, Eli made it faster than Peyton. Last season was Peyton's first trip to the SB, which was year 9. Eli is going this year, in year 4. but before we get on the "eli is better than peyton" bandwaggon because of this, comparing the two is a little difficult. a) the giants are in the NFC. there is no predominant force to reckon with as there has been a different represenative of the NFC in the Superbowl each of the last 9 or 10 years. the last NFC team to go back to back or have multiple appearances in the SB in the same decade was the Packers who went 2 times in the 90's and Cowboys who dominated the early 90's with 3 SB wins. since the packers lost to the Broncos, the bucs, giants, panthers, seahawks, bears, rams, falcons, Eagles, have gone to the SB. in the AFC, it's been the pats, Steelers, Colts, RAiders, Ravens, have been, with the Pats and Colts being the two top teams in the AFC year in and year out.

plus the colts didn't get "good" as a team until they got the defense fixed. the giants have a much better defense much earlier on than the colts did at the same time of Peytons career.

and b) the giants don't look to Eli as the focal point of the team. Eli doesn't have to carry the giants. that hasn't always been the case for Peyton. he was "it" from day one. as he went, so went the colts. not true of the giants and eli.

and i'm not trying to overly defend peyton here, but when this comparison comes up, and it will, if it hasn't already, there will be many touting this as Eli doing what big brother couldn't do........and it's not true, it's just different.

How many teams do you root for?

How are you going to determine who to pull for this weekend, is it "Brady's cute" or "I hate Peyton so I want Eli to win"?

Just wondering.

Geez, you didn't know that Eli made it quicker than Peyton......

Your NFL credibility now = 0.

As for that being some indictment of Peyton, I'd say if the Colts were an NFC team, they would probably have played in 4 Super Bowls in Peyton's career.

Well considering I just started watching NFL football 4 years ago, I think my NFL credibility would haven't been that big to begin with.

I officially root for the Panthers....then I root for teams playing the cowboys, colts, and steelers.

As for the pats, I only started cheering for them since the panthers didn't make it to the playoffs and were no where near making it. So I'm going for Brady.

I think the problem a lot of people have is that a guy like jakez4ut has been cheering for the Steelers his entire life. You've been cheering for several teams for a few years. Yet, when any of those teams manage to beat Cowboys/Colts/Steelers you gloat about it. That doesn't jive.

Additionally, if you've only been following football for four years, it should be illegal to root for the Patriots unless you live in Boston/Foxborough.

Also, Eli Manning's first season was in 2005, so if you've been following the NFL for four years, you should still be aware of how long it took him to get to the Super Bowl. He was the freaking number one pick, after all and there was a whirlwind of controversy surrounding his draft/trade.

No I've been cheering for one team for 4 years, not the nfl or have the know about the nfl for 4 years, just cheer for the panthers for 4 years. And when one of the teams I don't like loses, yes I'll be happy as heck, as anyone else would. If you don't like who I root for or why I root for teams, thats too bad. You have no word in saying who I do and don't root for. :eek:k:
