Charlie Strong Fired

He was never given a fair shot there to begin with

They gave him a HUGE leash. Somebody ran huge interference with those boosters. He was never a golfing buddy and story teller...always a first strike with those power brokers.

So apparently he's still not officially fired.

Charlie is a good man and position coach I'd like to have him on staff but I'm still pulling for Coach Shoop to make it work here

Strong won't be on the street long. He'll have his choice of either lower tier P5 like BC or Purdue. Interesting to see if he's too proud to take a D Coordinator job in SEC, perhaps at like Ole Miss or Miss St.

The link said the AD has stated he will be evaluated at the end of the season, which is the alert I got on my phone about 30 minutes ago.

So the links keep saying he's out but the AD himself has said it's not official.

Probably working on buyout...I think they are making a mistake...but I also don't think they had much of a choice...I mean how do you lose to Kansas?

Yeah, and depending on the buyout terms, he might come cheap...he might prefer taking Texas's money than taking a big salary :)

Hog wash.

Given 3 years.

Ended with a losing record for all 3 years.

Insane recruiting resources to work with and he never took advantage of them. His recruiting classes were weak for Texas standards and that's a fact. Last years class was the only respectable one and even that required a lot of late NSD magic to make work.

The fact that he's never had more than 10 commits this year makes me fairly certain that Strong knew this was his last season coaching at Texas. The recruits seemed to know realize what was going on as well. Strong has been coaching with one foot out of the door the whole year.

"Working on a buyout"

I think you mean "waiting for Coach Tom Herman".

Strong would not take a demotion. The man is a Head Coach...certainly not a bad one at that...just not one suited for a major P5 school.

None of the donors or administration wanted him. And the fact that there AD at the time was just as bad as mike Hamilton certainly didn't help.

I wished it worked out for him. At the end of it the team didn't look well prepared. I will say that it never seemed as though the boosters were completely on his side. At a school like that you gotta have the boosters behind you.

That place was never a good fit for him. Texas is a unique job, and I think it takes the exact right fit for it to work.

Did the admin prevent him from stacking elite recruiting classes? No. He didnt have an edge over LSU, A&M, Baylor, Stanford etc when it came to recruiting, despite the obvious benefits of living in Austin and going to UT. Even Bama was coming in and taking top prospects with ease (no shock..., but still should be noted).

When Strong had a ton of playing time to offer, a lot of the top TX recruit were already locked up elsewhere. As a head coach I think he tends to recruit his guys a bit later than other head coaches, which is fine (if you've got the connections to make it work) but I feel like his approach was completely wrong. Mack had year after year of elite recruiting classes (then slacked off towards the end like Fulmer) and could rely on his relationships with head coaches across Texas to get his foot in the door nearly anywhere so long as that recruit was in TX. Strong never had that sway which made his approach look completely amateur especially when compared to the likes of Briles, Stoops, Miles, even Sumlin & Shaw at the time. Even Kliff & Patterson were more attractive head coaches (no pun intended). And they all had deeper connections to Texas than Strong did coming into the job.

He was fvcked from the start but it had nothing to do with the donors or AD supposedly "not wanting him". The AD screwed the pooch by a) giving him too much money, b) not recognizing that he would be abysmal recruiting instate versus the regional coaching giants.

Not only that but it's been a revolving door at Texas since he's arrived, both for coaches and for players. It's not a particularly nice environment that he's fostered if you ask me. Sure he's "cleaning the place out" but you can do that in a little less obvious way, a way which DOESN'T make your program look like a complete dumpster fire.

Dis man made his bed, now he has to sleep in it. He's not a fool either. He's walking away rich AF so I have no sympathy for Strong or his current situation. I'm sure his wife and spoiled kids will be fine, too. :)

With the amount of football talent in Texas if you can't protect your borders and field a competitive team at the flagship campus your tenure will be short. They should have mopped the floor with Kansas. The last time Kansas beat Texas Hitler was annexing Europe. That's bad. There's wayyyy too much money backing the Texas program and they won't suffer bad seasons.

What's really ironic is that Fulmer and Brown had almost identical records when they were fired. I told Texas people they'd be sorry for a while if they booted Brown.
