This team has 64 Home Runs , Drew Gilbert has 1….. with a series on the line , needing a smash…. Who do you want in the box? I say Grew Gilbert … just says a lot about how good this team is… let’s all relax and enjoy. This Team has the make up to be really really special…. Let’s not ruin it as fans saying who’s the Dog , they all are contributing!!!

Seriously, enjoy the ride, there are a lot of studs on this roster and everyone has contributed at one time or another, thats why it’s a team sport. If your looking for individual recognition and accolades, go play golf or tennis. Sounds like it could be a few dads having pissing contest on who’s son is better, IDK……….

It’s a message board. The whole point of the site is to talk about Tennessee sports, including the baseball roster. I’m not sure why people are so afraid of conversations about which stud pitcher is the best.

I have no issue with back and forth discussions trying to determine “who’s best”, its entertaining reading the comments. I do believe that if Tidwell was healthy at the beginning of the season, he’s the Friday night guy and there is nothing wrong with arguably having your “best“ pitcher throw Saturday.

FWIW, if UT wasn’t playing Georgia Southern to open the season, Dollander would have started the 1st game of the season. Doesn’t mean he would still be the Friday guy or not, but in the grand scheme of things it really doesn’t matter.

Maybe the hat adjustment somehow affects the batter's concentration. The average player would want a hat that fits right and stays in place. I mean I thought about it, "why don't this guy get a hat that fits" and I'm pulling for him. It's definitely not affecting CB up till now so don't expect any changes.

Last nights announcers briefly mentioned Burn's slider and how it tails off differently at the plate. I didn't pay much attention to how many pitches he has in his arsenal, being just a freshman, but attempting to add an additional type of pitch is a process that can take awhile until a pitcher is actually comfortable using it in a game. He's a great pick-up for Vitello and the Vols and can only help us garner more productive players in the future. Also mentioned was this team is developing a certain "swagger" related to their confidence. Gonna take in a series one weekend as I've never seen the Vols baseball team live.
You should definately do that .. its a blast !!!

Seem like Drew is drawing a lot of walks recently. I don't have stats to back it up but appears nobody want to put one over the plate for him.

ETA..... Walked 6 time since conference play started.

95/96mph fastball with solid location with an absolute nasty slider.... He is legit as it gets.... The slider has the perfect tilt with his arm angle... Its nasty

I only saw the Texas game. I saw about all fastballs, sliders. If he’s got a change now, he’ll be hell to deal with.
That was third week. FA has everyone throw mostly fastballs early. Got to build up arm before you throw much stuff but when you throw 98 you don’t have to throw much extra stuff but he clearly has it.

Y’all are watching a different game than me. He threw two different fast balls, slider, and change last night. You can’t go by announcers they were homers questioning one of the best in the nation.
I see this as well. Fasbtall/Cutter/Slider/Change. His ability to locate 4 pitches at this stage of his career is crazy good.

He’s awesome. I wish I could’ve watched R.A Dickey play here. I heard he used to throw really hard at UT but idk how true that is

He is really good. Agree. But it is a long season. Let’s let him build a body of work and revisit. As mentioned, the next two weeks will provide some clarity for sure.
Freshmen starting pitchers usually wear down over the course of a season because they are not used to logging as many pitches as they will pitch in a college season. Burns in on pace to throw over 100 innings. We've only had 2 pitchers throw over 100 innings in the last 6 years, and they were both juniors. Hope TV finds a spot to give him a week off during the season before arm fatigue sets in.

And, when trying to add another pitch, it can affect a pitcher's other pitches and/or control. That should be an off-season adjustment, not mid-season. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Ya know, we’ve been discussing how it’s a great problem to have what amounts to 4 weekend starters when Tidwell comes back (hell, that’s arguably 4 Friday night guys). And that’s not even accounting for Halvorsen, who was Missouri’s Friday starter last year.

Maybe this is where that luxury comes into play: let Burns sit out a weekend (like Missouri) and start Tidwell, Dollander, and Beam that weekend. You could rotate those 4 among the 3 spots to keep them all fresh for the postseason. Just a thought. With the depth of starters this team has, there’s no reason not to get a lot of rest for them.
