Chavis is a good DC, but his giant huge failing is that he backs off into the prevent way too early. During the game, he'll do this on third and long way too often rather than playing it straight up, leading him to give up so many 3rd and longs that UT fans started calling it "3rd and Chavis." At the end of the game, he does it for entire drives. Chavis played the last drive tonight exactly like TN fans knew he would -- he brought three guys and dropped eight all the way down the field, letting UNC dink and dunk their way into the red zone, and then once they were down there he just blizted his ass off. You were one decent pass away from it costing you the game. Chavis's defenses are always statistically good, and they are satisfyingly aggressive, but he is about the worst DC in the country when you need your defense to win you a football game with two minutes left.
The D was over by the beginning of the 4th quarter. I agree with you about most of what you wrote, why because that is what I saw last year.
They did not play that way tonight... they were getting burned late in the game with tight man and man, the slants... and then the deep ball.
