Chaz Nimrod hits the portal

I’ll never understand why people get so attached to career second and third string players that never contribute. No offense to Nimrod but he never could elevate his play, but it’s a business right? And like many say, there’s usually more than money issues related to portal entries. I view him, like other posts said not smart and WR prima Donna’s , and as also weak, take his ball and go home instead of maturing and being resilient, so bye!

I’m sure several teammates probably think the same when he had a great opportunity right in front of him.

We have to go get a difference maker, not someone who can just catch the ball. This offense is missing the guy who can catch the hitch, make the DB miss and take it to the house. Right now, most of our guys get tackled very easily when it's 1 on 1. Except Bru-he runs through guys
I disagree with that.

Mike Matthews
Joakim Dodson
Ra Darius Jackson can do that.

But I’m not against getting a portal guy that has proven he can do that on the college level.

They need to tweak the portal until after the playoffs.

With that said, I'm hoping Ohio State and Oregon have 30 players each in the portal. lol

I wish he would encourage Dubar to explore opportunities in the basketball portal.
I'm tired of reading that he's going to be a no-show for this game or that game.

Bummer. Bought one of his jerseys after the Alabama game. Must have been passed by Mike Matthews on the depth chart.

This is certainly possible but unlikely. Nimrod is the Slot WR2 behind Squirrel, with Staley Slot WR3. Matthews has been playing outside like Bru, Brazzell, and Thornton.

I honestly wish we did use Matthews in the slot. Catching slants and matched up with a Nickel or Safety rather than 1 of the 2 opposing Cornerbacks. Matthews is like 6ft1in tall...so about 4inches taller than Squirrel and incredibly talented...but he is not 6ft4in or taller like Bru, Brazzell, and Thornton ALL are. Coach Hype and Coach Pope like the big 6ft4in+ guys outside...so I am not sure why they put Matthews there from camp thru the season. They obviously know what they're doing though much better than we do and I trust their judgment.

Honestly, Matthews may be used outside this season because Squirrel was our leading WR returning and the coaches knew that whomever was in the slot behind him wouldnt get many snaps this year. No way of knowing Squirrel would year his labrum and miss lots of snaps. Nimrod has played quite a bit in the slot this year, he just dropped a lot of balls to be honest. Staley is a beast though, and will likely be getting quite a few snaps in the slot in the playoffs now.

The 3 freshman WR coming in this class are all very good like Matthews and Staley too. Will be interesting to see where they end up next year IMO.

He never struck me as an above-average receiver. Nice guy perhaps, appreciate that he chose the Vols, but I see him as easily replaceable. Lots of stellar receivers out there would love to come to Tennessee. It's just the nature of the beast.

Matthews plus a healthy White that’s a senior- with Nico at QB is a dangerous combination.

Add in Brazzell abusing CB 1 on 1 in 3 wide and this offense should be scary next season

It's his college career but damn, he has ample time to be Nimrod....He will smoke somewhere else..

Do you feel the same about guys who transfer in?

"There's more than money issues related to portal entries......" cuts both ways doesn't it?

Or not?

White (Sr)
Brazzell (Jr)
Matthews (So)
Leacock (RsSo)
Staley (RsFr)
Jackson (Fr)
Dodson (Fr)
Smith ( Fr)

Walkons
Sneed
Weary

Heupel preaches competition but he’s always looking for WR types to make the opposition have to defend different skillset.

If we go to the portal it will be for a speed guy imo. Or he just rolls with the guys he has.
Hope something changes. This staff is yet to show they can develop a receiver room. The outliers are people that were athletically gifted enough to do it on their own(Hyatt, Jennings).

Sorta, however it appears CJH’s strategy has been, ala Barnes, to find upperclassmen with one or two remaining, instead of chasing portal guys like we see leaving.

Nimrod is exactly that: a guy with 2 years left.

Jermod McCoy, 3 years left.
Lance Heard, 3 years left.
Chris Brazzell, 3 years left.

I'm not sure exactly what you're getting at but some of our best portal pickups have been "like we see leaving" and not upperclassmen.

The problem isn't the portal and playoffs, it's that less important part of college football: school.

They have to be in the portal to get to another school and they have to register pretty quickly to be enrolled and practice and play next season.

It's awful that school gets in the way. 🙄
