Cheek is the next man out, right?

I want him gone cause he is sticking his nose in where it dont belong, in athletics, and making it harder for on the fence football players to get in, thus taking away quality athletes from the programs, and the fact that tennessee is only one of the few where the AD gives money to the university.

He's not targeting athletes. He is trying to improve the academic standards of the University. A non-athlete student also is subject to those standards (if not higher ones).

Football players are STUDENT athletes. The chancellor is responsible for students. Therefore, it is certainly his business.

Well then from what ive read and heard, he needs to lower them, cause tennessee is the second hardest school to get into in the SEC..

I'm not saying they aren't. I'm saying continuity is what matters here and 3 years down the line he's going to be up first before anyone else. This is worst case scenario stuff, not the likely outcome.

No he won't. I think you're missing the big picture here.

Criticize Cheek over athletics all you want, but retained or fired, the AD contribution isn't going to make a difference either way. It was a fiscally obvious choice. You don't get credit for getting it right and you shouldn't be criticized for having been the one who had to do it.

If you're going to take money from academics and place it in the hands of the Athletic Department as an investment, that's fair. But it had better pay off. I think he's on the line more than anyone else if Butch Jones doesn't right the ship.

we can only hope, but UT doesn't do much that is logical.

Yes you are right. I agree. The money was moved to help shore up the reserve and make Cheek look good and make it seem he is supporting athletics. A lot of it was a PR move.

Cheek needs to be barred from having anything to do with the AD. He was the reason coaches wanted nothing to do with UT. That is a fact.

"We've made a strong statement that we're not using state funds to backfill athletics," said Chris Cimino, vice chancellor of finance. "We've done all we're going to do."

This is a typical green eye shade view. They count the beans and ignore the top line which is revenue from ticket sales and donations to the UTAD. He will be scratching his head when the money stops coming in from a healthy athletic program.

OP has to be a Democrat. That accusation is akin to liberals claiming that tax cuts are "spending increases".

Letting someone keep more of what they produce is NOT the same as taking it away from someone who is used to getting it without earning it.

Horne Dawg Jimmy da Booger Eating Butt Cheek must be terminated long before we can tell whether Butch Jones can coach. Jimmy needs to go in 2013!

Jimmy thinks that being a top-25 academic school is more important than a top-25 football team. We should have a little VN poll on that topic.

Hart can stay if he will quit letting Jim Chaney cut his hair.

In the grand scheme of UT things, it is. Way more important if we have to choose between the two. But, we don't.

This is government buracracy at it's finest. In other words "We will continue to siphon money from atheletics whether they like it or not". That's like the government when they say they are cutting the budget. They don't cut the budget they reduce the proposed increase.

If anyone has any doubt that there are serious issues over there they need to get a brain scan. It has been going down hill ever since the AD was put under the chancelor instead of the president.

True. They want to take it from you so they can give some back to you, give most of it to others and claim they are the good guys. The academicians are bureaucrats who use money they don't produce. They give themselves raises on the backs of students, parents and taxpayers while they increase tuitions and clamor for tax increases to pad their pockets.

I think the problem was largely with the writer as the title and first several paragraphs are extremely misleading regarding UT's support for the athletic department. I doubt you will find much opposition to no academic or state funds being used for athletics. I support that 100%. The problem is the title made it look like the university gave funding to the AD with the $18MM they are no longer getting. We all know the truth regarding that money and where it originated from. That being said, we continue to see a trend where our university seems to have a leadership vacuum at the top and poor image management.

#1 - Given the sensitivity of issues regarding the new football coach, the funding in the athletic department did no one at the University level request a copy from the writer before publication? I would have never approved this article as written.

#2 - Leadership vacuum. I work in Finance. Why is Chris Cimico giving statements to the Knoxville News-Sentinel? Never in my experience has a finance guy given statements to the press of this type. These types of statements come from the CEO or COO of an organization--which in our case should be Jimmy Cheek. I could be making too much of this, perhaps Jimmy gave Chris permission or asked him to do this, but its bizarre sitting from this Financial Analysts perspective.

Incorrect. He's pissing away money into some goofy programs and making some seriously head-scratching decisions on raises for administrators while increasing tuition around the board.

I only get mad at the people wanting him fired for thinking his job security depends solely on football. These are the people that think the University exists only for sports.

Don't forget he is the author of the program by which some students pay more (a lot more) for their hours than others. Not a level academic playing field at all.

UT is a state school and should be available to the masses, not just to the privileged few. Tuition and ACT scores continue to go up. If the school is supported by taxes, it should not try to be so exclusive, IMO.
