UT is a state school and should be available to the masses, not just to the privileged few. Tuition and ACT scores continue to go up. If the school is supported by taxes, it should not try to be so exclusive, IMO.

maybe the masses should study harder and get those scores up

UT can only accept a certain amount of students. In order to control the numbers, they raise the admission standards.

If you're going to take money from academics and place it in the hands of the Athletic Department as an investment, that's fair. But it had better pay off. I think he's on the line more than anyone else if Butch Jones doesn't right the ship.

....ok...

State residents are entitled to access a state institution of higher learning--not necessarily UTK. Allowing such a right would pose numerous problems for not only UT (such as overcrowding, lack of resources), but also the many other state institutions like ETSU that rely on state students to operate or otherwise be downsized. A stable student population is in the best interest of all institutions involved.

Supply and demand is what is pushing UT's admissions higher than some edict from the Hill.

Cheek needs to be barred from having anything to do with the AD. He was the reason coaches wanted nothing to do with UT. That is a fact.

You mean the stuff that the coaches who were fired or had their job offers revoked said?

In the grand scheme of the university Academics> athletics and it should be that way. However, as I student I'm quite pissed at Cheek for raising tuition every year I've been here (2 years). All the projects going on right now on campus: the new UC, new residence hall, taring down all those buildings at the corner of Cumberland and I think 16th, and other small things all over the place are good for the university in the long run but it's too much at once imo. The campus was already hard to get around on now it's a nightmare for walkers and drivers. Plus it's just ugly.

I am not sure Cheek can raise tuition. Doesn't the BOT have to approve that? Or, is it THEC?

Yeah, but it's all part of his "Top 25" plan. I don't think it's a reasonable goal personally. It's a great one but lets go for like top 40 or 35 first then top 25. You can't make college so expensive that the average person can't afford it. Can't be a 25 university without students.

Cheek wants to be a top research institute. So, UT's students will be like the guys off "Big Bang Theory". Individuals that can't function in real world. We all know THAT guy from school that picked and ate his own.

are people seriously suggesting and buying into the notion that the Chancellor of a University should be fired for not finding the current state of a football program the most important facet of his responsibilities, not trying to find a balance representing the best overall interest of the university? smh....

"In the scientific and medical communities, the technical name for using one's finger to extract boogers is rhinotillexis, and doing so compulsively is termed rhinotillexomania. The act of eating the resulting harvest is called mucophagy.

There is an Austrian doctor who has gained notoriety by advocating the picking of one's nose and the consumption of the resulting bounty, particularly in children. Dr. Friedrich Bischinger, a lung specialist working in Innsbruck, would have us believe that people who pick their noses with their fingers are healthier, happier, and more in tune with their bodies. His argument stems from the notion that exposing the body to the dried germ corpses helps to reinforce the immune system. The good doctor feels that society should adopt a new approach to nose-picking, and encourage children to take up the habit.":)

A chancellor injecting himself into a coaching search and actually being involved in the interviews is beyond the pale.

Cheek is bad for this state not just the football program. UT is a state school that should be for our own citizens first. Top research institution my arse. That is way overrated and is for career students.
