I'm not familliar with the article you mentioned; proof enough I haven't followed this thread in its entirity. However, you're just making my point for me.
In our free market society, the balance of what a job is worth is dictated, not solely by the industry, the individual worker, or the a priori opinion of an internet poster. It is decided by what it takes to get people to do it in the free market society.
When you import an illegal base of workers willing (and most likely forced, due to their illegal status) to undercut that free market exchange between employer and employee, then the free market system is broken and it creates an unfair advantage one way or the other.
So, what we have with the illegal workforce is the uncomfortable situation where american workers don't just have to compete with the US standard of living for pay rate, but the standard of living of every third world country that has people escaping to come work here.
These immigrants are called "illegal" immigrants for a reason-- because they are here illegally. These arguments that we are a hypocritical nation since we all descended from immigrants that stole the land from the natives is hypocritical in itself.
Every person making that argument owns or leases the house they live in. I don't see them giving the house back to the native population. As a matter of fact, if an "illegal" visitor came into their house at 1am and started eating out of their fridge, I suspect even these folks would (at least) call the police to have them arrested, or (at worse) shoot the inruders' ***.
We are a nation with skyrocketing unemployment. If a certain percentage of that population takes the opinion that we should enforce our borders to keep our jobs open for unemployed citizens, then one should at least acknowledge the logic behind their opinion.
