China Thread

The Chinese government will add fentanyl-related substances to their list of controlled drugs from May 1, in a move aimed at curtailing the manufacturing and distribution of one of the world's most powerful opioids.
The new laws are likely to be interpreted as win for US President Donald Trump, who has taken a strong stance against fentanyl and was full of praise for China in December 2018 when President Xi Jinping first agreed to the move.

Filipinos Are Beginning To See The Ugly Side Of Chinese Investments
The trouble is that some of these investments have yet to materialize. And when they do, they will leave the Philippines heavily indebted to China, as they are financed with loans rather than grants. And that raises the prospect of debt turning into a “trap,” and turning the Philippines into another Sri Lanka.
stop me if you have heard that before.

Inside China's Massive Surveillance Operation

Makes me extremely grateful for the religious freedom we have in this country.

The Chinese government takes no stance on Religion that I am aware of, having lived there for 12 years, millions of Buddhists running around un-persecuted. Their persecution of organized groups is often mistaken for religious persecution. They are terrified of any organized group from Mary Kay to Catholicism and for the same reason. I see their surveillance of Muslims as anti-terrorist surveillance and similar to what is happening in the USA now. They don't need the FISA court and this clearly shows why that court is needed to monitor/control anti-terrorist activities. Surveillance unmonitored becomes the easy way out and normal after a while and privacy disappears.

Still, it's not the religion they fear, it's the organization. There are many other organizations in China at risk as well.

Yes, that's my understanding. China's somewhat open in allowing individuals to do their own thing, but it's aggressive in clamping down on organized activism (which churches engage in).
