The reason is for medical research, as discussed in the 60 Minutes segment.

Why would they need DNA from Americans for medical research? They have over a billion people in China that can't refuse to "donate" their DNA for research.

The Chinese probably just haven't bribed the right people. Otherwise, I just gained some respect for Romania - hopefully for them they'll continue to tell the Chinese to go home.

The real story of the "Belt and Road" is the belt is like a noose around the neck and the road always leads straight to China. When the Chinese finish the project, they own the poor slobs who fell for it and suck them dry.

Oh, it absolutely is. I highly question the motives of Germany when they repeatedly keep getting abused by China in these tech transfer deals, while getting very little market penetration in return. But they just keep going to the trough and bending Europe further and further closer to full downstream reliance on a genocidal authoritative regime.

Germany will guide the entirety of the EU into being a very unequal trade partner with China. China doesn't need or care about Romania so long as it has Germany, France, etc on the hook.

This is also, IMO, why Myanmar fell to a coup recently. That opens up a nice Indian Ocean port for them for direct access to the Eastern Coast of Africa where they conveniently own, or will own soon after the debt trap kicks off, a ton of ports.

I'm not comfortable with the US Government, US Corporations and certainly not the CCP having genetic information.

However, I fully acknowledge after the sweep of fashionable genetic test corps like 23andme, that's a foregone conclusion.

Speaking of 23andme, I just find it suspect that the CEO of it was married to the founder of Google and is the sister of the CEO of YouTube (also owned by Google). Not exactly a group I would trust with my political affiliations, much less my genetic information.

The Chinese currently have naval bases on the Cambodian coast. Even during the war in Viet Nam they were extending a road from China down through Laos - which was off limits to us bombing. The map shows the road and presumably the direction for the rail project. The land distance is much shorter if you jog across Burma starting right around the golden triangle. I don't know enough about topography there to know what's possible, but a line across Burma would sure hedge some bets. With the dredged up S China Sea bases (like Fiery Cross Reef), it sure looks like the Chinese are working to bottle up a trade route. They run the Panama Canal and have bases just south of the Suez Canal. You would hope our military and security agencies understand a lot more than anyone is saying.

Agreed. I can also see 60 minutes selling that rational since a couple Chinese companies are heavily invested in ViacomCBS and it's affiliates. Also there is Chinese money backing some of Viacoms biggest shareholders. (How much I don't know)
