I think it’s a huge nothing burger. Nobody is going to put any sensitive equipment in a freaking balloon in this day and age. This isn’t 1947 and the government isn’t trying to cover up Project Mogul by saying it’s a weather balloon. Not a laughing matter. Those communists could have anything in those balloons. It’s not some armature as the CCP stated earlier today.
We have them in every direction? South, west, and north are directions. We don't have them blocked there. So, the Pentagon is sticking to the "it's a spy balloon, with limited maneuverability." since we are dealing with a spy balloon, I went reading into reasons why?, and why a balloon (the big question).
Turns out the pentagon announced Thursday that we have formed a partnership with the Philippines to add additional bases in the indonpacific and china seas. This is directly to deal with the China threat. We now have them basically on all sides in every direction. It's an attempt to contain them (It's a big deal). THAT, along with the statement issued by the airforce general telling his military to get ready for a confrontation with China in 2025 with some pretty explicit language a week or so ago, is combining with Blinken's now cancelled visit that was supposed to happen this weekend. It was enough to push China into a show of force of some kind.
I read up on why a balloon with some analysts from various places, and it turns out a balloon was the perfect vessel for a non confrontational, but still meaningful show of force from China. It's not doing anything, and they WANTED us to see it. It's a "look what we can do" thing without being too confrontational. A reminder to the USA.
There is really no reason to take it down yet, and it may not be active at all if this is the case. It's simply a "don't come any closer" from China because of recent US moves in that area. That would make sense.
Not sure this one is at the right altitude, but a thermonuclear detonation at a certain altitude would generate a massive EMP that could cripple up to 1/2 of the CONUS.
I'm pretty sure that we have the technology to tell if a nuclear weapon is aboard that thing. If this is a test run to see how we would react in the event a bomb in a balloon is floated over, they got no info.
Edit: you and i may have just stumbled on to a reason why they didn't respond... the government doesn't view this particular incident as a serious threat for some reason and they don't want the CCP to know how they'd react.
With the second one currently over Latin America, what if one of those nations has the capability to destroy it and take the steps in doing so. Meanwhile, our advisors are taking a wait and see approach.
Not a good look for the current administration.
Imagine if this had occurred a few weeks prior to the midterms. Instead, we were gifted with a Paul Pelosi escapade.
But we can’t risk excess cow farts!Typical Brandon soi boi, accept the Admin spin unquestionably. Just believe everything they tell you verbatim and you will be fine.
And as far as injuries on the ground, look up Montana on Google Earth. Plenty of areas where we could shoot it down with absolutely no danger to anything except maybe a few cows. Think for yourself man!!!!
I get that there are reasons not to shoot it down right away, but it can’t be allowed to leave our airspace. It either needs to be shot down or hacked and brought down. It should never be in Chinese hands ever again.I've obviously been questioning the "shoot it down immediately" philosophy and my thoughts are: if they have some reason to believe that it isn't much of a threat as is, why risk killing somebody when you bring it down? My more recent thought is, "if it isn't doing much damage, why show them how we would react if it were a real threat?"
