I've actually come to believe that the Trump is beholden to Putin thing is unlikely. Not impossible. But unlikely.

I do think Putin knew (and knows) how to appeal to Trump's ego. Add to that Trump's desire to show he was Putin’s equal, such that he could choose to believe him, and I think Trumps ego simply kept getting the better of him, as it has so often before.

Putin bamboozed every President he ever dealt with. Bush looked into his soul and said he could trust him. Hillary under Obama infamously gave the Russians the gag reset button. Obama mocked Romney in the debates for warning about Putin. Politicians of both parties are alike in the regard of hearing what they want to hear. Heck, I always thought he was RATIONAL; evil but not reckless.
He fooled a lot of people, Trump included.

Has anyone thought about why China would use the claim this is a weather balloon? They know the West's obsession with climate change. By using such a blatant lie, a weather balloon is something Progressives in the West can relate to. Like China cares about climate change.

My speculation is this was an intentional provocation to test the Biden admin’s response to an airspace violation. Wouldn’t be surprised if they prod further with a military jet soon in the near future.
