Chinese spy balloon hovering over Montana

You can bet your ass a truther would LOVE to start an incident with China. If not that, a youtuber, or heck, one of our nightly media news casters in the name of ratings. murdoch would be triggering everyones panic buttons with one hand down his pants and a smile on his face.

As VB said "I should know better" but.

How is any of the above going to start an incident with China?

Remembering back when I was young and we kids fought over who got to burn the garbage (including all sort of plastics and the occasional bicycle tire) 😬

Me, too. Kids are big on pyromania. I used to love "firing up" the grill; that lighter fluid was for pansies - I used gas. The trick to that is you get everything soaked and flip a match in from a distance. Always loved that big "Whoomph" and 5 ft flames.

IDK, have they been around for years?

I was thinking about that last night when someone motioned changing "gates". That's radar talk for changing discrimination techniques. I don't know how things are done now, but the old pulse radar systems used a delayed signal and compared it to the next sweep. Anything that matched (was stationary and was deleted) to remove stationary returns ... declutter the image so moving objects are easier to spot. Balloons don't move fast, so they may have been routinely blocked until now that they've become a big thing.

Basically filtering slow objects?

Basically filtering slow objects?

Exactly. Stationary stuff and slow moving objects. I'd guess from what has been said that NORAD or whoever it is today will be looking at least part of the time for slower moving things. The lack of reflectivity for balloons will certainly complicate the issue - they may be big and visible - but not necessarily to radar. Like a stealth fighter may be hard to find on radar, but it doesn't do anything for them once they are in visual range.

Makes one wonder if this was a secret US counterintelligence operation that was blown up once the public became aware of the presence of the balloon.

If this is remotely true, it seems like my earlier theory might not be so crazy after all...

Tensions Rise Over Spy Programs as U.S. Investigates Downed Craft

In a sign of how closely the United States had been monitoring the balloon surveillance program directed by the Chinese military recently, U.S. officials said in interviews that they began tracking the spy balloon as it lifted off from Hainan Island in southern China in late January.

yes, they have. The WH just told us that.

In todays briefing, the WH has stated:

1: We are very serious about uaps, and Biden is the first president to get regular briefings on the phenomena. They recognize it as a global problem.

2: They have determined China has a high altitude spy balloon program they are zeroing in on.

3: It's not a weather balloon.

4: In the interest of national security, and in the interest of being factual, you are not getting more then that yet, because one of you yahoo's will trigger an international incident.

It’s in times like these i am thankful to have Biden’s wits in the Oval Office.

If the US officials really wanted this to stay quiet and keep monitoring they would not have let this thing fly over the continental United States so everyone knows about it.
Bingo.

I've seen military folks I know all over LinkedIn trying to say it's not our right to know secret operations, they likely knew it was there and let it fly over sites because those sites were "protected" from spying eyes, etc. It's a major cope.
