This would be my choice of the true candidates, but Marshall will be the next coach.

Why not? What's wrong with them, and who's the better choice?

Mooney seems like a flash in the pan. Marshall just seems sleezy like Calipari to me. Maybe he is not but hey appearance. lol Now make no mistake about it for whoever says yes I will be behind him. I definitely say bck the brinks truck up to a big time coach. Starting with Stevens. make him say no and if he does show him more money. It has worked for Bama in football and Kentucky in basketball.

Huh. I never would've thought that about Marshall, but I don't know much about him beyond on the court results.

Mooney's team was 10-22 in conference his first two years and 26-6 his last two years. That doesn't seem like flash in the pan to me. Certainly more substantial than everybody's favorite flavor of the week. Hat does raise legitimate concerns about Mooney's recruiting, but that's an unknown, not a negative.

Mooney's recruiting? Good enough to get to the round of 16. Better than Pearl with 2 McDAAs.

Which is to say good enough to beat Vanderbilt in one game. Their second round game was against Morehead State.

Getting good enough players to make the Sweet Sixteen from the CAA doesn't mean you have good enough players to make the tourney at all from the SEC. Not saying Mooney can't. Just saying one Sweet Sixteen doesn't mean a lot. Small sample size = high variance

Vandy > Michigan
Morehead St. > Michigan

Talent level
Vandy > Richmond
Morehead St.= Richmond

The best recruiter is winning.

Small sample size = Buzz Williams and Shaka Smart

Not after our idiot AD gave the staff a public death sentence.

So what exactly are you arguing? First you said Mooney recruits or coaches better than Pearl, evidenced by the Sweet Sixteen. I noted that the road was easier, including a team that we beat twice. Now you said that we wouldn't have beaten them with the distractions at the end. Well, sure, that's true. But what does that have to do with Mooney's coaching?

Hard to know about Mooney. Solid coach. I think his personal and coaching style is on the conservative side. Could be another buzz peterson or brad stevens...

I'm not arguing. He's in the S16 because he both recruits and coaches well enough to get there. That "easier road" is a lame argument in the tournament. Regular season, that can be argued because they control who they play.
Bottom line, he'll recruit a better player at a bigger school. Plus a good floor coach is worth a McDAA.

He beat Candy and Morehead State. He got lucky with the draw. We'll see what he's made of next round.

Sure, he recruits and coaches well enough to get there once, that's trivial. But that doesn't make him particularly special (lots of people have made the Sweet Sixteen), and that doesn't give any indication that he'll do it again.

I like Chris Mooney. I'm just saying the concern is legitimate that he hasn't yet been a part of the recruiting environment that he would if he took the UT job. That's all.

It seems to me that a lot of Vol fans analyze coaching candidates the way Seinfeld analyzed women.

Don't want him...man hands...close talker...regifter....

I am hoping for Lawrence Franks, but more realistically see Buzz Williams being here.
Franks will not be the long term solution but for the short, few years that he will be here, he can get some solid recruits and keep the program in good order. Once Franks leaves for the NBA again, we can bring in a college minded coach.
