Cigar /Pipe Smoking thread

I’m retired, now, and on a budget. The online deals that I’ve learned about from the thread regulars has allowed me to continue to enjoy premium cigars. A tip of my hat to you all.

Not retired yet but still watch my spending. I got turned on to online deals from this thread as well and pretty much only shop that way now.

I finally got around to the m81. It’s been in my humidor for a couple of weeks I think. Toro, about 1.5 hours to smoke. Good not great imo. Started out very strong bodied. I’d say earthy tones, kinda tastes like the woods smell in spring and fall (I personally enjoy that).
Mellowed into a creamier smoke for the middle third and finished back to the strong earthly tones and maybe coffee ish. Good burn throughout, needed no touch ups. Good aroma.
Enjoyed near the pool with bottles of ice cold water and the sound of the pool fountains. What a great afternoon!

Alas, the fifth of my Macassars will not stay lit. First one of these that I’ve had that hasn’t been a perfect smoke.

This morning, I’m trying an El Rey del Mundo Oscuro robusto. It comes wrapped in thin white paper with the band outside. The cigar wrapper is not as dark as other oscuros I’ve tried. It is an oily aged/cured leaf. First impression - nutty, woody, with a hint of sweetness, medium-full body, good draw, burning smoothly through the first third.

Just north of me got hammered by storms overnight. Early this morning, it’s cloudy and calm. With storms forecast for midday, now’s the time for a post-breakfast smoke - a Fratello Oro robusto. Natural Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, Camaroon binder, Dominican & Nicaraguan filler. First impressions, a little spicy, a little citrusy, grassy finish. I think that the Camaroon binder gives it the je ne sais quoi.

The Fratello Oro had a good draw, medium body, and burned evenly throughout with firm ash. 👍🏼

This morning’s burnt offering is a Charter Oak Connecticut Rothschild. Note the unique closed end. Nicaraguan filler with a shade grown wrapper. First impressions, leather and wood. This is a full bodied cigar in a natural Connecticut wrapper. Peppery in the first third.

In the early ‘90s, when cigar bars were the rage, I would buy Puros Indios retail for $2/stick. Now, the original “Roly” is a bargain stick at $1.75 per online, and the Puros Indios Vintage toros are $90 per box of 20, when you can find them online. I’ve read that Oliva has bought the brand.

My recent order included La Palina Red Label banding boo boos for $2/stick. First run cigars on which a black outline picture label was applied. Cigar Page acquired these faux pas and sold them unbelievably cheap. Ecuadorian habano wrapper, Ecuadorian binder, Nicaraguan and Dominican long leaf filler. First impression - smooth, medium bodied smoke with complex favor of wood and leather with a little pepper and a little sweetness.
