Dan is a poor recruiter. Just as one example, UF’s class is higher ranked than ours but look at how many DBs are in that class. A recruiting class needs to address needs.... I like our class (and potential class) better than UF’s due to it addressing across the board needs..
It seems to be a popular refrain here to question the number of DB’s committed to Florida right now. The number is 7 (if you look at the list it will show 8 because Finley Graham is listed as a DB. He will not be a DB at UF, he’s a punt/kick returner and may play a little slot WR eventually - think Brandon James from several years ago).
To criticize 7 DB’s committed shows a lack of knowledge about UF’s current roster and DB depth. This is a huge position of need for UF. Florida only has 3 experienced CB’s/NB’s returning; Marco Wilson, Kaiir Elam and Tray Dean. That may become 2 if Wilson goes pro and that’s 50/50 right now.
Safety isn’t much better. UF returns 3 experienced Safeties; Brad Stewart, Donovan Stiner and Shawn Davis. Stewart is on his last chance in terms of discipline, already been suspended twice. Davis also may go pro. That would leave 1 safety returning with experience.
So low numbers returning combined with the fact that UF coaches were not happy with the secondary play this year particularly at safety and nickel. These areas were far from elite.
Florida did have two promising CB’s redshirt this year who will help the depth situation; Jaydon Hill and Chester Kimbrough.
So in general, the entire secondary is a huge position of need in terms of numbers of bodies and the need for a talent upgrade. This is why any Gator fan with knowledge of the roster is pleased that Mullen is loading up in this area. Considering most teams constantly have 5-6 DB’s on the field these days, signing 7 doesn’t seem out of proportion at all.
Overall, this recruiting cycle for Mullen has been outstanding. I expect every position to be more than adequately filled on Wednesday except RB. That will be a spot they try and sure-up by the February signing date, plus maybe 1 more WR. Mullen has a great shot at a top 5 class which will go a long way in destroying this “he can’t recruit” narrative.
I expect a good close for UT as well. I agree with most here who think UT will finish between 12-15. Washington and Jospeh will be the two who can really swing some positive momentum UT’s way.
