Well, if his offense is no-huddle like Oregon, it will be something the SEC has never seen before. I don't remember much about Auburn's offense in 2010 when they won the championship, but I do know that Gene Chizik's offense was more similar to Oregon's than it was to Florida.
My best friend and I talk football constantly all day, whether we're at home with our families and we're talking over cell phones either verbally or via texts, or doing text messages while we're working, and he noted something interesting about Cincinnati's defense, in that his defenses are noted for giving up a lot of points. Now, if he can hire a good defensive coordinator to run the 4-3 or the 3-4 and limit opposing offenses to scoring 12-19 points per game (No 3-3-5 or 3-5-3 please!), I think he can win big in this league. His offenses, according to my friend, are a little more pass happy than most spread attacks, so there is a better than good chance that we could see Butch Jones installing an offense here at Tennessee that is similar to what you see at Oklahoma State, only eventually doing so with better talent. He has a history of winning his most important games on the schedule, though he never beat a school from the SEC or someone like Ohio State at all. (There is a law in the state of Ohio preventing antitrust situations amongst the state's college sports teams, so in other words, Ohio State is required to play teams like Cincinnati, Miami [OH], Kent State, Toledo, Ohio, etc., since they are all Division 1 college football bowl teams.)
I personally feel like this was a great hire in hindsight. When I first heard, I was sorely disappointed because I really wanted Charlie Strong. However, when I saw that he has had success at every single school at which he's ever been head coach, coupled with the fact that he's built his teams into dominating forces within the conference it was located in within two years, it makes me think, "Gee, Charlie Strong won the Big East title this year for the first time as well as earning the conference's automatic BCS bowl bid, but look at Butch Jones, who has taken teams at two schools and made them into conference championship caliber teams as well AND has done it two times at both schools AND finished in the top 25 at both schools despite they're not being noted for being big time football schools...," it just amazes me what the man has been able to do.
Jones' mindset is as close to that of Phil Fulmer as fans of Tennessee football have seen. He is a winner, and he may have more of that championship swagger than any of the previous UT coaches have had in recent memory. The knock on our two most successful coaches in modern times -- Johnny Majors and Phil Fulmer -- was that they rarely won big games. For Johnny Majors, he always lost to Auburn and Alabama. For Fulmer, he always lost to Florida, and then later on, struggled to beat Georgia as well when the ship started to sink. This guy has a history of winning most of the big games in his conference if he's got the talent to pull the trick off. Did he win enough games the past two years in the Big East to get him to Orange and Sugar Bowls despite coaching Cincinnati to conference championships? No, he didn't. But he does win enough games to crown his teams conference champions and to get them nationally ranked. We're in for a treat with him as head coach. Just you wait and see.
