Coach Jones says players being 'transformed' in summer conditioning

Alright, Nancy, let's just take this to be all negative.

What if the freshman are just better than advertised? What if they merely fit better in the system Butch is putting in? No need to get all whiny and pessimistic well before damn fall camp starts.

Not a problem Francis - just pointing something out - imagine that - an opinion on a message board.

If, if's and but's were candies and nuts we'd all have a merry christmas.

Sorry if you read my post as whiny and pessimistic - I have high hopes for this team and the season. Just making an observation. I apologize for pointing to the reality of the situation - you guys are right - we should never read beyond what is written in an article. I mean after all what are we here for? To be an echo chamber?

Not sure how to take that - do our "veterans" suck that bad or are these guys just that good.

This worries me.

Shouldn't worry you. These aren't really structured practices. They aren't game condition practices. Nearly everybody looks good during summer, but it's fall that counts.

Considering none of us know jack sh*t about the "reality of the situation", basically all we can be is an echo chamber. Or, apparently, we can be little cynical children.

Just to point out the cynical nature of your post.

I simply asked a question and gave an opinion - you jumped on me, Nancy.

While it's always great to hear good things happening in the program, I can't remember the last off-season where we weren't told about how hard the players were working with the strength coach and how much more physically fit we'd be in the upcoming season.

I am sure a lot of the players thought they were working hard last year, and the year before. Clearly some players, like Bray, were goofing off because they could.

Still, there's a big difference when you have a trainer determined to get the maximum achievable effort from every player on every rep. AND, more importantly, when the effort you give in Summer has consequences on how much PT you see in Fall.

This coaching staff has sent the message that everyone has to compete and that they are going to recruit the best so don't get complacent. That is a key that has been missing.

Since most of what they are doing now doesn't even involve a football; they call it strength and conditioning for a reason, I would'nt read a lot into the qb statements. If young guys are pushing it means they are bench pressing more, finisihing the drill better etc. Which is ALL good it means they are leaders

This trainer has won industry awards for explosion (quickess/speed) training. What did the team not have last season outside of three WR's? Yep.

Do not agree with the "young team" theory. They are young in two positions - WR & QB outside of possibly one CB position where a juco may win the job. That's it. Everywhere else there are upper classmen starting and in the rotation. Those guys know what a war an SEC game is. If they have bought into the new system and are getting in better condition it could get very interesting to the positive this fall. A strong running game and D can counter some inexperience at WR and QB until they catch up.

Yeah, I know. I don't understand, though, how Georgia, Florida, Alabama and others can have young teams and still maintain a high level and win several games. I mean, c'mon, other teams start Freshman and do just fine.

Better coaches

Losing 260 pounds of fat and gaining 240 pounds of muscle is not what we hear every year about the S&C program. CBJ commenting on the change he sees in Big Dan wasn't coach speak. You can't pessimist your way through this new day on RockyTop.

If i recall right, CBJ told the Dander Man, he wanted him to be the best DT to ever play at the UT. Out performing the Minister of Defense is highly questionable in my view, but.... In any case, The Dander Man said he was on board and commented how his weight loss already resulting in his knees being better and his being able to move faster. If he gets down to oh say, 340 with his brute strength, it's either Hulk Smash or it's Clobberin Time!

Conditioning is going to be key for the schemes this coach wants to run both offensively and defensively, no huddle, non-stop.

They are making a start and it's good to hear about it.

“They’ve never run the way they’ve run,” Jones said. “We can’t have any interaction with them. They’re in the hands of (strength coach) Dave Lawson (and his staff). But when they come up, to see the transformations in their bodies is unbelievable.”

Jones singled out defensive tackle Daniel McCullers as showing the most dramatic transformation.

...Jones also said he was pleased with the progress of UTÂ’s two freshmen quarterbacks, Riley Ferguson and Joshua Dobbs.

“We’re very fortunate to have two of the finest quarterbacks in the country come here,” he said. “I’m ecstatic about those individuals. Word has it they’re pushing (veteran quarterbacks) Justin Worley and Nathan Peterman.

this is where summertime articles always lose me and i don't know what to believe.

if they are on their own and simply working out right now, how can dobbs and ferguson be pushing people for their job?

that doesn't make sense to me.

Yeh since we can tell that they are better than the other QBs by working out with Lawson. C'mon you guys over analyze everything. He said their pushing them. That all. Creating competition. I know everyone is in love with Dobbs but he's not going to start.

The Coach's dont even know if Dobbs will or wont start. How is it that you already know and the guys making millions dont know. I need next weeks lottery numbers bro, will split the winnings with you. Oh and I do believe Dobb's definitely has potential to start as does Riley, contrary to what you say.

We will be a very young team and you know what that means in the sec.:eek:hmy:

All fans should look in the mirror everyday until the first game and say "We will be a very young team".

I think the Vols will be fun to watch, but there will be a lot of youth out there and that means mistakes (and hopefully learning).

Enjoy the process this fall!

All it says is those two are pushing Worley and Peterman, doesn't say for playing time. Since it is summer conditioning and I assume drill work; they are probably pushing them in their work ethic. Nothing pushes someone more than a guy behind you on the depth chart busting their ass off. That seems to be the case here from those comments.

Wasn't Reggie White a DE in college and converted to DT post Phily?
