Coach Martin not interested in top ten players

Coach Martin indicated when he released Ware that he wanted players who want to be here. He said he was not interested in the top 10 players, but wanted the best players he can get that are top 100 players and will be here four years. He said 4 year players are needed when you are building a program. Is this type of recruiting going to allow us to have an elite program? Are we building a program or trying to maintain success? I'm interested in any comments on his recruiting philosophy.

can it work?

Look at Butler, back to back Final Fours.

Good lord I call foul on Gonzo the clown. Tell that to UK who is in the Final 4. So this prick basically told our recruits to screw off. Blah blah blah they don't want to be here or did Gonzo not want them to be here.

In case no one has put it up, here's the quote.

“It’s top 100 guys — it’s not always those top 10 guys,’’ he said. “When you’re trying to build ... it’s hard to have guys with one year, you want four-year guys.’’

You translate.

One of my questions was, are we building or simply trying to maintain our current level. We've been to the NCAA 6 straight years---building for a national championship or simply maintaining?

Cuonzo said the goal is to win a national title in the press conference. I think he understands he needs great talent to win a national title

I don't think any coach's plan is going to be to be, "ah, let's just see if we can keep sneaking into the tournament." Obviously, he wants to try to win at the highest level. The question is, can he do it?

I agree. All coaches talk about winning a national championship, even if it is not realistic. We haven't been sneaking into the tournament other than this year. We've had at least one 2 seed that should put you in position to make some waves in the tournament.

I will take a team of above average solid juniors and seniors over the top 5 freshman any day of the week. The more experienced team will win 8/10 times.

i seem to remember a team from Michigan that had 5 freshman and made back to back championship games.

That is a very relevant and recent example. Well done..(sarcasam intended) Not to mention they lost to a much less physically talented team their sophomore year.

There is always an exception. That's why I said 8/10. How many times has that been repeated? What type of players comprised the Carolina team they lost to?

You either misunderstood and did not listen to what Coach Martin said. He said that he would recruit top rated players if they had the right attitude and character.

Guess he won't try to get Tobias and Scott to stay. Weren't they both top 10?

If this is true, he has no business coaching at a top 20 basketball program. I understand wanting a mix of veterans and young guns, but rejecting the young guns is crazy. Seriously, if this really is his backwards attitude, and I'm going completely by your post, then we are in for some bad basketball and bad recruiting.

Get real Guys. What he meant is that he wasn't interested in players that didn't have their heart into playing at Tennessee. He will recruit the best players he can but he is not interested in the Egotistic type.

Thank the Lord, there is someone else who has the common sense to know what he was saying. I agree.

For all of you who find fault with going after and getting the guys who will stay three or four years. How can that be a problem? How many have we lost up till now? Oh, I remember, Bernard only stayed through his junior year. But Ernie stayed the course didn't he? Did Allan Houston leave early? Tyler stayed through his junior year didn't he? Aftrer playing his freshman year in Iowa? Even Bruce Pearl didn't lose them early to the NBA! Now, Scotty may go and Tobias may go, but aren't you glad we had them? And now that the coach says we are not going to go after and lose the one and done guys, you see that as a problem? We haven't been a magnet yet for those guys who leave early--what do you think will suddenly change? The only thing I can see, is we may have a coach now that these guys may want to come in here and play for for only a year or two. And that is a good thing if they are really that good. Chillaxx you's!

Good. Bruce Pearl's best teams were made up of guys who were not top 10 players. And to be honest, the top 10 players we have had haven't really taken the world by storm.

Scotty has been inconsistent throughout his entire career at UT. And when it became "Scotty's team," we barely make the tournament and get blown out in the first game.

Tobias was very talented but wasn't the dominating type of player everyone was touting him to be. Most of that is because he had no one around him helping him out.

So the team with the highest ranked players Bruce Pearl ever brought in was an underachieving disaster. I would like to see the UT team with CJ Watson, Lofton, Dane and JaJuan play this years squad. This years team would get smashed.

I welcome coach Martin's philosophy of recruiting within his system and bringing in guys who want to be here. If Bruce would have done that instead of going after the high profile guys (which landed him in hot water), I think we would have been much better off.

If you are Cal, you get at least 4 of the top ten. Unbelievable, but true.

Think about it. Ok, which had you rather coach, a guy that's going to be here 1-2 years or one that's going to be here 4 years? The 4 year guy provides consistency AND should improve every year. The 1-2 year guy says slam, bam. thank you Ma'am, and is gone; you have to start over with another guy as a replacement. Are you really going to get the most for your program with a 1-2 year guy? I know it depends on a lot of factors but I would think, as a coach, you would rather have a 4 year guy that would continually improve (hopefully), knows the system, and provides that team leadership year-to-year. Obviously you want all of your players to suceed and be the best they can and if the opportunity presents itself for them to take that leap at the 2-3 years point then so be it, however, I would think that would be the exception. Do you guys really think Harris and Hopson are NBA-ready? I don't. I think they need at least another year as opposed to playing in some developmental league, maybe. In any case, I wish them the best. Just saying....

i knew what he was saying about four year players.look at it in context with this tobias was all business ,he averaged over 15 and 7 rebs which i think was avery good year but i dont think those kind of numbers are the kind warranting leaving for nba if he would have scored 23 pts 12 rebs,he should stay another year or two i would like the nba to make a new rule that a player stay a minimum three years ,one nba teams wouldnt have to pay these players who are like last years ncaa national player of the year Evan turner not helping my sixers at all,two if a player stays in school for atleast three years when he goes to nba if he plays sparcly for a couple years he more than likely get his degree where a one and done probally want

If there is a top 10 basketball in UT's backyard in Nashville or Knoxville and Martin doesn't recruit him he will be run out of town.
