Coach Martin not interested in top ten players

Um, I would like to see where he said he didn't want any top 10 players. All he indicated was that 4 year players are who you build around.

Glass is always half empty with some Vol fans. The idea that he is not going to try and recruit top level players is asinine. Get a grip on reality.

I for one like CCM's recruiting philosophy! I for one, hope we never get to be a team of one and dones. At that point I won't be watching a lot of Tennessee Basketball. I have no wish to be like Kentucky or Ohio State. I'd much rather us build a program like Butler's or Duke's.

Ohh yeah I guess Oakland, Charleston, Charlotte, Indianapolis, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, and others were loaded with Top 10 players...guess that's why we lost with our own all americans. Face it, under radar guys are now starting to win more

National Champion

Duke '09-'10 - 7 players on roster with 2+ years of experience. All 5 starters on NC team were 4 year players. Bench players -> The Plumlees are in their third year and Dawkins is in his second year. No one and dones on that roster.

UNC '08-'09 - three 4 year starters, two 3 year starters. Bench players -> Davis left after 2, Zeller is in year 3. No one and dones.

Kansas '07-'08 - one 2 year player, two 3 year, two 4 year. Bench players -> Sherron Collins and Kaun stayed all four. Aldrich stayed 3. No one and dones.

UF '05-'06 and '06-'07 - four 3 year players, one four year players in starting lineup. Bench players -> Speights stayed two years. Moss, Hodge and Richard stayed four years. No one and dones.

UNC '04-'05 - two 4 year players, three 3 year players in the starting lineup. Bench players -> Terry, Scott, Thomas and Noel stayed all four years. We finally have ONE one and done player, but he came off the bench even in the NC game - Marvin Williams.

That's all I felt like looking up. Does Martin have a point in looking for multi year players? Sure seems like it.

He'll recruit top 10 players, he just wants them to stay. Hes not Calipari who doesn't object to coaching one and dones year after year. OP misinterpreted the comments IMO.

Guess he won't try to get Tobias and Scott to stay. Weren't they both top 10?

If this is true, he has no business coaching at a top 20 basketball program. I understand wanting a mix of veterans and young guns, but rejecting the young guns is crazy. Seriously, if this really is his backwards attitude, and I'm going completely by your post, then we are in for some bad basketball and bad recruiting.

Wonder how many top 10 Butler and VCU have? They have no business in the final 4 if they have none.

But we don't have Brad Stevens coaching them up. We better flat get some players in here unless Martin is a miracle worker. You guys that want to do it the Butler way are chasing a pipe dream.

Coach Martin indicated when he released Ware that he wanted players who want to be here. He said he was not interested in the top 10 players, but wanted the best players he can get that are top 100 players and will be here four years. He said 4 year players are needed when you are building a program. Is this type of recruiting going to allow us to have an elite program? Are we building a program or trying to maintain success? I'm interested in any comments on his recruiting philosophy.

You People......... that is not what he said if you don't like him as our coach fine, but misquoting him then beating him up over your misquote is:loco:

+1

That's because we are only willing to pay a coach half as much as we can afford and have to settle for unproven amateurs.

I sure hope your not saying Martin is an amateur. If that is what you think of him, I think you are sorely mistaken!

I said nothing to beat up the new coach.* I simply asked for thoughts of others.* I am not unhappy with the hire and wish only the best for our new coach.* Try reading what was posted instead of adding your interpertion of the post. Simply asking for the input of others is in no way attacking the new coach.

Here's a thought.
If his philosophy is to have a base of top 100s and a couple of top 10s, he's already got his dream team if Hopson and Harris stay.
He built a winning team at MS with unrateds. will be interesting to see if he can get guys like Tatum and Hall to play to their potential.

I agree. We have had a scout team of 4* players who, hopefully, will all be there next year. Let's see what the new coach can do with them and look for the recruits that he will be bringing in this year. No reason to think that we can't have a very competitive team next year, regardless of what Harris and Hopson decide.

This is what he said. I somehow doubt you'll see him turning down top 10 players because he thinks they won't stay all 4 years.

Since he's not successfully recruited a top-10 player in his life, nor a top-20 player for that matter, nor been part of a staff that did so, it's likely a moot point anyway.

How many top 10 players had Pearl recruited prior to coming to UT? We don't know how well he will recruit until he is given some time here.
