Coachery

So it looks like no one has been in this thread since last night, but I am going to post this here anyway. This is what I know as of today, people kind of opened up after our new head coach was hired. Our AD really did swing for the fences for the hire, CJH was always considered, however others were contacted to see what would shake out.
Franklin was totally in the mix, however he wanted a huge salary to make the move (I don’t blame him). When I say huge salary, it would have made him the highest paid coach in sports, college and pro. Others I heard were scared by the upcoming NCAA sanctions, which is totally fair. CJH was in it from the start.
Napier was never in the mix, not sure why. Dykes was never in the mix and was not contacted by anyone official from UT. I know this because I called the AD at SMU and asked him. I know him through other folks. He said to his knowledge Dykes was never offered the job. If you don’t know who the AD at SMU is, google him, his name is familiar. Elliot was considered, however he was talked out of taking the job. It’s a hard job moving from coordinator to head ball coach in the best situations, add everything UT was facing, it would have impacted his career in such a negative way if he didn’t succeed. He will get his opportunity in the next 2 years in a much better environment.
Now to Freeze, Chadwell and Kiffin. Freeze rubbed a lot of folks the wrong way, all over the SEC and ACC. His holier than thou attitude while doing the things he did, it did not make many friends. Chadwell basically burned a program to the ground on this way out. These 2 were never going to get a sniff due to the incoming NCAA sanctions. Its kind of hard to say “we know we messed up, but we have learned our lesson” and then hire one of these 2 guys.
Now on to Kiffin, who I thought would be great. I think he is a great offensive coach and also his players love him. He is also a huge smart ass, which I also love, we need another Spurrier type in the SEC, might as well be at UT. However Kiffin burnt so many bridges on his way out of Knoxville, it just wasn’t going to happen.
That being said, I did talk to 2 ADs who are in the ACC, they are friends of mine from being here in Atlanta (not hard to figure out who they are, my dad played ball at The Institute and most of my family went there). Both thought CJH was a great choice considering the circumstances and were actually surprised he took the job. That was all due to Danny White.
With that being said, this has been a great ride and it was great talking to all of you in the coachery thread (also the plane tracking thread was very amusing). All of you are awesome, even if we didn’t agree. Love the passion for UT.
On another note, I finished my treatment for a rare blood cancer today and so far everything looks good. If it is not caught in time or treatment doesn’t work, you have a 2 - 4 year life expectancy. That was found last year on a routine checkup and because of course it was 2020. Following this thread and chatting with all of you took my mind off of that as well as my grind at work with all the Covid patients we have been seeing. Needless to say to has been a depressing and trying time, but you guys and gals made it all better. For that I truly thank you.

Good luck with your health and be well.

Thanks for sharing. Franklin would have been a home run Day 1, but once the honeymoon is done, that salary in this situation screams toxicity. “Only 7 wins for this salary?”

I’m surprised there weren’t more we went to with “just” top 10 money, but probably many didn’t even respond to our search firm.

No offense, but the qualifier “to my knowledge” by Hart Jr is often exploiting plausible deniability in my profession. But Dykes would never be contacted if it wasn’t a yes, Danny would know of the interest with his sister at SMU.

Regardless, a good hire. I really don’t think we get much certainty outside of those elite candidates. I would have preferred more signs of value added as a HC, from building a program or doing more with less, but CJH is a promising young HC

Thank you. All of you are great, this place has been a wonderful distraction and such a great place for me to forget about everything except UT football over the last 2 months.
The BEST of everything to you !!!! Take care of you and yours, The Vols are on their way back. WE ALL HAVE GOT THIS. We have hope because without that we have nothing at all. GO VOLS !!!!

Off subject, but coming from a (part-time now) dirt road deputy sheriff in Georgia, just let me say how much all of us on the Blue Line appreciate those of you on the White Line who have stood your watch with honor and unending devotion to duty in the face of a virus that none of us understood, and all of us feared. Without fail, every EMT, nurse, and MD I have had the honor to work with over the past year have been braver than a lion in heat. Pun intended.

Coming from me, but speaking for all of us, thank you. You have given us a lesson in courage and devotion to duty that, for me, will never be forgotten.

There are other threads on Volnation you might want to check out as well. We are like family here, even if we fight about all things football. 🧡

Hope you keep posting - recruiting is usually fun to follow! 😘

Yes I am old enough and Kiffin has admitted to making mistakes. I believe that calling players is all on coach O. Just like we have players leaving now they do that when coach's leave. I also remember the excitement that he brought that we hadn't had since 98 or the end of Casey Clausen . I also remember people upset that he left because we didn't want him to leave not because we was glad like all the other coaches. I have still been able to get behind all the new coaches when hired but I can't no more and if we would have hired Kiffin it would have been alot of excitement back a big boost of excitement and that means money for Tennessee but they don't get it. Alabubba did and went and got there guy. Wish we would do the same.

Leaving is one thing but the guy tried to steal recruits from the school going out the door. Once a dirty egg sucking dog, always a dirty egg sucking dog. BTW: tell me again about all of the championships Kiffin has won as a HC.

What about stealing a AD and there coach days before recruiting? And coach O has won a national championship so it's a matter of time before ole Miss will. But I know what you are getting at and I would take Kiffin over coach O and bye the way he got fired at ole Miss and won at LSU. And coach O was the one calling players.

First of all, Heupel was not even in my top 10 of potential coaching hires. With that being said, I think there's a path to success with this hire. We know he can score points so we're rightfully focused on defensive hires and recruiting. However, the key to success for Heupel with the assistance of DW is Synergy. The players, coaching staff, athletic director, chancellor, president, and boosters all need to be working together and pulling in the same direction to the same end. If that happens, the wins will follow. If not, Heupel will fail.

Hopeful also. I'm a little iffy about bringing too much from UCF but this is a late hire and a tough time to get staff. I'm VERY VERY concerned about our defensive coaching hires. Defense isn't his strong suit.

As an aside, I took a 92yo lady for her 1st vaccine Monday. Her daughter said I was the "only person she'll get in a car with because she knows you won't get her sick." Taking her felt good, and the honor of her asking me to also take her by the graves of her husband and daughter whom she'd not visited in over a year was extra special. As usual, it's not "big thing" but the "little unexpected thing" that means so much to the people you help.

Stay safe. And GBO.

That is actually a huge thing and you made a big impact on her life. That is something she will never forget, good for you. It's like we tell our staff, you never may remember a patient, but the impact you had on their life they will remember forever.

Randy Boyd has shown that he is willing to spend money to make money as evidenced by the contracts to Barnes and White.

A $24 million dollar contract to Heupel over six years is not being cheap.
Yes it is cheap on a per year basis. It was reported we were going to offer FU money and we might of done that for Franklin but did we do it for Fleck,Campbell, Napier and Herman. If not we either failed or were never serious about paying the money to bring an big name candidate here. Heupel is an underwhelming hire.

It may be underwhelming but it is the correct hire for the circumstances.

Not if we could of offered a bigger fish like Campbell. As many stated here in the last 2 weeks, make them an offer they can’t refuse. Would 8m have been enough for Fleck or Campbell. I’m not hearing that we gave any of those two guys a serious offer. Would 6m have been enough for Napier or Herman ? Those options are better than what we wound up with.

What if you talked to them about the job and the circumstances and they indicated they were not interested in the job before any money was brought up? And no, we don't know those options would be better, under the circumstances.Synergy between the coach and AD is what we need right now.

Herman? No. He’s no better than CJH in coaching football and a horrible fit. Zero interpersonal skills and a poor leader. This is going to be an uphill battle and he’s a downhill guy, at best.

Campbell wasn’t interested. Not sure on Fleck
