Coaching Search Thread

Candidates:
Stephens- Butler
Smart- VCU
Mooney- Richmond
Frank- NBA
Williams- Marquette
Marshall- Wichita State
Turgeon- Texas A&M
Martin- Missouri State
Larry Brown- Pipe Dream

Stephens wouldnt leave a good job where he has made it to the championship game lastyear and is the sweet 16 this year. There are multiple coaching openings and this one if not in the top 5. He's signed through 2021. GET REAL. Should we offer him the job YES. Should people keep bringing his name up seriously as being our next coach, NO.

Williams at Marquette is better off staying there. He has a good team, makes decent money, and knows what hes got. He doesnt have to come here and risk having a depleted roster, NCAA sanctions, and a dipsh*t AD. Contrary to popular belief, everyone isnt all about money.

Larry Brown......LOL.....That's almost as bad as everyone saying that John Gruden/Lovie Smith were going to be the UT football coach lastyear. Chances are he could call any school that has an opening, or a school whos coach is on thier way out and get the job.

Basically what im saying is that we are in the same(if not worse) position as when we were looking for a football coach. We all love UT and we all think it is the greatest place in the world. Outsiders, simply, do not. To them we are a school with alot of money and a fanbase that will cut the throat of any coach we have reguardless of the face. Coaches know we have a depleted roster and that if he doesnt win in two years, hes canned. The risk here simply isnt worth the reward. Not to someone who is doing fine. We may get someone good, but he wont come from a school that is doing good.

NBA coaching experience equals a great recruiting opportunity. He has college experience at UT. He knows UT and knows about recruiting at UT. Any NBA level coach is likely a better X and O coach than college level coaches. It would be a great hire in my opinion.

I find this to be distinctly untrue.

He recruited well enough at UT under O'Neill that it took Jerry Green 4 years to ruin it.

If it is really true that he is the main reason for O'Neill's (recruiting) success, then I think he would be my number one candidate. It is true that sometimes a head coach gets all the credit when it was really the assistant that did all the work.

I'm almost ready to throw my hat in the Lawrence Frank ring. Who else could we realistically get who is worth getting?

Let's be honest. Is anyone besides 4 or 5 people on the inside really going to know before the deal is done?

There were so many experts who had the new head coach flying in for the presser - who were absolutely wrong - during the "Dooley" search, I just won't believe it till I see it.

Shockers look impressive. They were undoubtedly hurt by playing in the pile of suck that was the Missouri Valley. If not for losses to VCU and SIU (RPI 200+) they probably dance.

Missouri State beat them twice, finished 25-8 and they didn't dance.

The way I see it, there are basically two hires that would save Hamilton's job....Phil Jackson or Mike Krzyzewski. Now I know that a lot of you think these guys are unrealistic candidates but if Hamilton is really such a great fundraiser, he should go all out and try to get one of these guys. Jackson currently makes about $10.3 million per year with Lakers, so I think we would need to offer him in the $12 - $15 million range to entice him. However, you also have to consider that Knoxville has a much lower cost of living than LA. But with the resources that UT has, I don't see why we can't offer at least $12 million per year. We spend much more than this on athletic facilities, and I would much rather have Phil Jackson as our coach than the new practice facility we built a few years ago. I mean can't Hamilton talk to the Haslams and ask them to finance this hire? Plus what more does Phil Jackson have to prove in the NBA? He has already won 11 titles...if he wants to go down as the greatest coach ever, he needs to cement his legacy by winning some NCAA titles. Now for Coach K, this is probably more of a longshot because he is so loyal to Duke. However, if we offer enough money, who knows what can happen. Plus, just like Phil, this would be a great challenge for Mike, as he as already proven himself at Duke. Let's see if he can rebuild a team from the foundation and lead us to the NCAA title! Now the ideal circumstance in my opinion would be to have Phil Jackson as our head coach and Mike as the lead assistant and recruiting coordinator. This would obviously take some big time cash, but once again, Hamilton is always said to be a great fundraiser. If Hammy wants to save his job, go talk to the Haslams, get them to donate a couple hundred million, and go after both Phil and Coach K. Get it done Hamilton!!!

What part of my post do you find to be inaccurate? Let me ask you this...how much money do you think it would take to get Phil, Coach K, or both? Keep in mind that UT has a $1 billion + endowment to work with.
