Coaching Search Thread

Its history now and no use looking back...so with that being said...who have we actually expressed interest in? What is the expected timetable? Realistically, what is our best case scenario for the following month?

I was sold when I watched VCU against ODU. The offense flows into shots. They kept hitting the soft pocket in the middle of ODU's zone and making plays from there. Watch how their 3s don't seem like afterthoughts.

they got beat pretty soundly by ODU. Maybe we should just grab Blaine Taylor instead?

all the coaches they want to talk to are still in the tournament. that's why they named a int. coach.
the butler coach edwards, the vcu coach shaka smart, marquette coach buzz williams, and the richmond coach. i told ya'll yesterday say hello mid major!!!!

If they were not willing to throw money at a big time football coach, then I see no reason they will for basketball. There is no reason a mid major cannot come in here and do a sound job. Look at what they are doing in the tournament with less talent than the big boys on the block!

I really hold judgement on Shaka until a few more years. He is currently coaching a team of winners, who was recruited and developed by Anthony Grant. Joey Rodriguez was the point guard for Winter Park, FL also on the high school teams of Chandler Parsons and Nick Calathes. Jamie Skeen is a borderline pro prospect. The starting lineup is 3 seniors, 1 junior and a sophomore. They shoot 36% from 3-pt range and around 75% from FT line as a team.

To me this is all signs of someone who has a really nice chemistry as a team instead of someone whom is a great coach.

I think for me unless it is a great hire like Frank or Brown (which would be a remarkable program saving hire); Rick Byrd seems like a logical choice. He would hopefully want to keep tradition and the integrity of the university in check; since he is an alumnus of the school and the program. I think he graduated in the mid 70s and was also part of the program. He is from Doyle High School so it would be a hire to appease the area people who call sports animal every day to talk about high school athletics. He has administration experience since he was a director of operations. He also follows the pattern of Mike Hamilton. If you get burned by previous people whether its cookouts, hostess, or phone calls and illegal practices. It is time to clean out the program and bring in someone who has a mindset of the players, program and administration. Like Dooley, being on the admin side as well as the coaching side he will make decisions that have precision in their thinking.

I dont know much about the Belmont program, but I know that it is time to get off TV for cookouts, phone calls, and Bumps. This program has history and is one of the leading attendance figures in the NCAA; and to top it off you have to appease a growing number of supporters whom will not accept just a "hott right now" head or assistant coach to replace one of the greatest coaches University of Tennessee has ever had.

Five point loss that I watched -- down by 13 at the half and closed through the second half (previous games: VCU by 9, ODU by 11); looked a lot like an Izzo loss. (There was a 20 point loss to George Mason, but VCU beat them by 16 in the conference tourney). As I said, what impressed me was scheme. They had lost 4 of 5 going into their tourney, yet there was still 100% effort and a complete lack of tenativeness (if that's actually a word). Still, only game I saw before the NCAAs.

if by closed you mean the lead was extended to almost 20 then we agree. They made a good comeback but didn't finish because of the hole that was dug. Why not just grab the ODU coach since he can win conf titles?

...

I'm not saying you're wrong on Smart, but, for my part, I started searching for guys I didn't know enough about roughly a month ago, and Smart was the one I was most impressed with. That's actually WHY I watched the ODU/VCU game, which otherwise wouldn't have interested me. So, the "hot right now" thing isn't a deciding factor for me, just a nice thing that's happening so that the guy I like might get hired.

Rodriguez actually had an extremely mediocre shooting year after being pretty solid last year. In wins he's 39.6/37.9 (fg/3s), and in losses he's 26.0/25.0. Letting a guy shoot you out of games (which may or may not be what that indicates) is on the coach and could be a criticism of Smart, but I can't imagine telling your senior point guard, who HAS to play well for you to win, to stop shooting.

Down by 19 at 8:21, down by 2 at 4:27. This I like. If you do this in one of your bad games -- and it WAS one of their bad games -- it's a great indicator.

Not sold on Smart purely fron the recruiting angle.

From possible names mentioned so far, Grant is hands down the leader. I still think it's coming from somewhere else though.

Recruiting from everything I've read is one of Smart's strengths. He was a great recruiter at Florida and Clemson. He has also done a good job of recruiting at VCU.

Grant makes no sense. He's already got a rebuilding effort under way at an SEC school--why jump ship to start all over with another color tie?

I know he is not a top candidate or anything, but what do you guys think about Cuonzo Martin of Missouri State?

Sorry my friend, NEXT.

lets start looking at coaches and rosters. If a coach has a senior laden team, and comes into a situation where he is in his 2nd or 3rd year and they have a good season it is because he might have inherited some talent instead of just saying he is a good coach.

Cuonzo Martin had 4 SR and 1 Jr. - good season
Shaka Smart had 3 Sr, 1 JR and 1 Soph
Rick Byrd had 2 Sr, 2 Jr and 1 Soph
Mooney had 3 sr 1 Jr 1 Soph
Buzz Williams, 3 sr 2 jr
just ask jerone maymon if he should be a candidate.

Alot of these guys were recruited by others and then the coaches came into a nice situation struggled up front and once the teams developed until there senior year they put it together. The question is do we want to wait until chemistry is created or do we want someone who knows how to teach and create chemistry immediately.

Chris Mooney is in his 6th season at Richmond, so he's having success because of the players he recruited and developed. When Mooney got to Richmond they had 7 scholarship players, so it took him a few seasons to recruit and develop before the wins started to come. Also in his only year at Air Force, Mooney led them to their second best record in school history. He is only 38, so if he has success at UT he could be a long term solution. I'm not saying Mooney is a home run hire, but his resume is quite impressive for a mid-major coach.

I definately agree, he is MY choice unless a gift drops in from Orange Heaven. I still think the ties with UT could push Byrd ahead, but I like Mooney and his ivy league education doesnt hurt and collegiate success doesnt hurt.

I didn't think Martin would be to well received I don't even know who he is. I just wonder why he made the list of candidates.

I am hoping we can get Smart or Mooney I just think with the the AA coming down on us soon and the roster possibly thinning its going to scare top candidates away. :twocents:

If we couldn't get any of the top candidates who do you think we go after? Greg Marshall? or someone else?

"Lawrence Frank is the front-runner to replace Bruce Pearl as the head coach at Tennessee, according to sources close to the situation"

"Other candidates include Shaka Smart, Chris Mooney, Anthony Grant, Buzz Williams, Gregg Marshall, Mark Turgeon and Chris Mack."
