Coaching Search Thread

Why not? If Doc retires as soon as speculated than no way he takes over this team. He's not big or proven enough to take over a vetern squad like that. I don't see Frank staying years as an assistant when he can go coach somewhere making a lot more money, especially on the college level. I think he accepted the job because a lot of people were speculating that Doc was going to retire and he was unemployed. He should be a head coach somewhere and I see this happening, even at the college level if another NBA team doesn't offer.

He has a chance to get a ring this year. We need him now, exactly why he will not come.

Here's the full report from hoopsworld:

Yesterday, the Tennessee Volunteers fired head coach Bruce Pearl, who has been charged by the NCAA with unethical conduct for a number of off court transgressions. Sources close to the situation said that had Tennessee stood by Pearl, the school would have lost up to two scholarships for two to three years and would have had to work around major recruiting restrictions. Also, Pearl would have received a two year show-cause. The program would have also had a postseason ban that lasted at least one season. With Pearl fired, he'll still get his show-cause, but the university will likely only lose one scholarship and have minor recruiting restrictions that would limit campus visits among other things. Many candidates have already surfaced to replace Pearl including Lawrence Frank, Shaka Smart, Chris Mooney, Anthony Grant, Buzz Williams, Gregg Marshall, Mark Turgeon and Chris Mack.

I think its just a guess. So far in every coaching search, Hamilton has had smokescreens. No way this info is already out.

I agree completely. If the football hiring process is any indicator, several big names will circulate around, but in the end it will be someone completely different from out of left field. We just got lucky with CDD because I have no confidence in MH's ability to staff our major programs.

I don't see where it says that he is the leading candidate. It just lists his name first. That could mean absolutely anything.

this guys is waaay overrated imo. just bc he coached in the nba? on the nets who fell off significantly when the majority of their good pieces left. idk about this one. id much rather have mooney or smart in that order.
he will likely bolt if given an nba coaching job..

How are we lucky with CDD? He's unproven. And NBA assistant coaches salaries are jokes. Take the guy from the Kings for example. Look at NBA head coaching salaries for unproven guys, which is the kind of contract Lawrence Frank would get. He'd make a ton more in Knoxville.

Phil Jackson had trouble making the playoffs before they added Pau Gasol

I'm not saying the guys you mentioned would suck but if you want instant success, I think he's the type of guy and name with his background that would give you instant recruiting success. Plus he's not really that bad of an Xs and Os guy.

@AlexKennedyNBA

"Lawrence Frank is the front-runner to replace Bruce Pearl as the head coach at Tennessee, according to sources close to the situation"

"Other candidates include Shaka Smart, Chris Mooney, Anthony Grant, Buzz Williams, Gregg Marshall, Mark Turgeon and Chris Mack."

Sources close to the situation = TOS?

Not saying that's the case, just throwing it out there.

You mean he didn't win when his teams didn't have good players? Weird.

I am sure Hamilton is going with Grunfield's suggestions for selecting the next coach and it seems like Frank would be a coach Grunfield is very familiar with.

If we hire Smart or Grant I will be pissed. Not proven enough.

I think Grant is proven enough. To me, VCU is more of a testament to him than Smart. Not sure he would leave one SEC school for the other. But he is right there with Brad Stevens at the top of my list. This Frank cat looks like he can coach too.
