Coalition of the Realists

Can the coalition of optimists join you guys? Kinda like the team joining the Pride of the Southland band during circle of life drills

Absolutely. Optimists are always welcome. Glad to have you. Welcome aboard.

As with the distinction between Negavols and Realists, there's also a distinction between Sunshine Pumpers and Optimists.

We're honored to have you. Welcome aboard! :hi:

The level of vitriol in this thread is mind boggling. I hope no one wants the Vols to lose and hope no one seems "justified" or "happy" when and if it happens. I joined in because I like to have realistic discussions about the games in an analytical way beyond "We gonna whip dey ass". Will I be upset if the Vols lose? Absolutely. Will I be surprised if we win this game? Absolutely. That's being a realist. In no way do I want us to do anything but go out there and shock the nation its just a very very long shot to happen. That doesnt make me a negative fan or a negavol in my eyes. If it does in yours then I do nto know what to tell ya.

Anyone that gloats about being right or truly wants the Vols to lose should re-examine their team affiliation and definitely should be banned from this forum.
Very good post. I think most of us fall into that category but the extremists are so overly vocal with their opinions, they stand out.

Off topic, but I see you are in Charlotte. I am too. Have you had a chance to see any of our commitments from the area play yet? I was hoping to go check out Kendall some time this season. We live across the street from Cuthbertson High School.

i havent seen any of our commits play but try to keep up with how they are doing. I am not familiar with Cuthbertson, would have to look that up. I'm getting older (37) and i dont think that was a hs here when i was in school. I went to Olympic and Harding, both in southwest Charlotte. Lots of Vol fans here and recruiting has been great here too...some of our best players are from within 30 mins of here. (North, worley, etc.) still disappointed about Ferguson. kid had a great arm...think he could have been good in another year. Threw a great deep ball, and with our WR he could have been really dangerous next year. i hope Peterman grabs the starting job and never looks back...unless Dormady is all-world. QB could very well be what keeps us from winning the east next season. Hope thats not the case.

I'm sure the same realists said the vols couldn't best USCe last year... Like all Tennessee athletics I'm going in thinking we win until the clock strikes zero!! Go vols!

Could not have said it any better, nor would I try. We shall call you the Chief Communications Officer of the Coalition.

hey, I accept the position. Does the position come with a cool armband or epaulettes I can wear during games? :salute:

I don't know why you pessimists keep saying that those who believe in victory will be the first to call for Butch's head if we lose. That's not true at all. I for one, believe we can win, but I will not be on any "Fire Butch" bandwagon if we lose. You negative nancies are the best at twisting and putting words into others mouths.

I think they are referring to fan's that have unrealistic expectations and can't handle losing.

If Oregonvol's poll is any kind of indicator, a lot of people have bought in to the thought that we will beat OU on Saturday. A lot more than I figured. If you think we beat OU, you really have to believe we are a 10-2 or better type team, right?

Laid back, with my mind on my Vols and my Vols on my mind.

I just hope we win, just like every week :clapping:

Why would a "fan" even think of starting a thread like this??

Please, find another team to pleasure w/ your support.

If upsets never happened then your logic would be right. However they do happen. There are other factors that weigh in but in the end, all games begin as 50/50. Nobody can predict the future.

I'm afraid it's not a matter of acknowledging upsets. Of course upsets happen. To say you downplay "There are other factors that weigh in" far too much is a major understatement. If the Seahawks played Vanderbilt it would be an absolute absurdity to contend Vandy had a 50/50 chance of winning. I'll leave you to decide what Vandy's chances would be against the SB champs but they damned sure aren't as likely to win as to lose. Changing the names of the teams involved would alter the probabilities of course but the principle would be exactly the same.

We can even keep the teams the same. If the Broncos are playing Team X on Sunday and on Saturday Peyton breaks his ankle going down the stairs that event, in and of itself, radically changes the odds.

Gotta learn to goose step. :w00t:

I might need to practice awhile to master it like Cleese.

I appreciate and respect your opinion. Like you, we realists, are entitled to ours as well.

Go Vols! Shock the world!

the good thing here is the Vols dont have a damn thing to lose. Their playing with house money here and the whole nation knows it. All the pressure is on OU to run us into the ground. If they do, then thats what everyone expected. If they dont then everyone will start giving UT some props and OU will be looked at as a bit overrated. Something they have been notorious for the last several years when they have received a high ranking.

This is a fact. OU does not want to be playing the role of Apollo Creed if UT shows up and goes all Rocky on them. UT can win something even in a loss. OU can lose even with a win.

Of course, I'd just as soon take the perceptions out of it and have UT win straight up, unlikely as that may be.

If we win, I'm going to be very happy

If we lose, I won't like it, but I expect it, so it won't be too hard to swallow

Not like 2001 SECCG. I would have set a whole warehouse full of mattresses on fire

I agree with all of the above

Right, I don't think people understand what 50/50 means.

It means both teams have an equal chance of winning. It means if they played 100 times that Vandy would on average win about 50 of those games.

There are two possible outcomes, winning and losing, but that doesn't mean there are 50/50 odds of winning or losing. Two totally different things.

The only way it can be legitimately looked at as a 50-50 chance in any game involving two opponents is in the regard that one team loses and one team wins but that is simply a statement of fact not in any way akin to the "odds" of one team winning over the other.

If every game were a 50-50 chance it would make betting a lot easier against the spread lol.
