Coca-Cola superbowl ad

Setting aside the obvious plethora of North American Indian languages, can anyone name, lets say, 3 non-English languages spoken by non-immigrant Americans? Just wondering.

The question will arise of why should I, a non-immigrant American, learn another language unless either my job requires it or I have that urge.

This nation's immigrants learned English back in the day because they wanted to be Americans. They incorporated other parts of their culture into ours, but did so while speaking English. They made sure their children learned English. While many kept their native tongues, they also knew this nation's unwritten rule that the primary language was English. And they learned it willingly.

Unfortunately, political correctness these days says we have to learn other people's languages and respect their cultures. Our culture is speaking English. So how about them respecting the American culture for a change?

Off the top of my head I can come up with creole and Gullah. I am not sure if you would count hawaiian.

I would say that some of a regional dialect made us diverse in our language

Thick Northern or Southern can be just has hard to understand

Then throw in some Ebonics in the mix

Broken English can be right hard to understand

I'm not sure I know, or have seen, any immigrants that are putting forth no effort to learn English.

Are you just pissed that businesses are accommodating non-native speakers by offering menus, commercials, etc., in foreign languages to broaden their customer base?

Best ad of the Superbowl. And, for those presenting some rose-colored view of the immigrants in the past and/or trying to defend your xenophobic bias by appealing to some watered down understanding of the impact these immigrants have on our economy, you are doing a poor job.

I felt a sense of pride from it as well.......and a few of the reasons some don't care for it include ignorance, fear, and insecurities....the same people who abhor change, who want everyone to think, act and LOOK like them....

Amnesty for All

Amnesty from what?

Amnesty and clemency presume some wrong-doing. Individuals that have come to America to work have done nothing wrong, regardless of whether they came legally or illegally. Unless you think that law ought to inform morality and, thus, be the final arbiter of what is truly right or wrong. Of course, the only persons that would hold such a perverse view would be lawyers and law enforcement personnel. Oh, yeah, that's you.

You should probably get out more.

Am I pissed that they accommodate non-English speakers? No, not really. Depending on the location, a linguist might be a good things to have (Orlando, New York, Las Vegas and other places with high tourism rates) on hand to work through any troubles.

Since you want to argue, here's the next question. Should I be expected to know Spanish as a primary language in certain parts of this country where English has been the predominate language for over 200 years?

Forbidden by law does entail wrong no more than permitted by law entails right.

Other things that have been forbidden by laws: interracial marriage, drinking alcohol, smoking cannabis, reading the Bible, reading the Quran, reading the Uppanishads, pre-marital sex.

Things that have been permitted: beating your slaves, hell, slavery, physically abusing Jews, destroying Jewish property, raping your wife, etc.

Of course, you will simply say these are "bad laws". By what standard? Said standard and measure must lie outside the law.

The ad was a beautiful thing. Now lets see if Saudi Arabia will allow their national song to be sung in English on Aljezeera TV by American immigrants! I'm sure that would go over well! :)

I'm more pissed that I have to select between Spanish and English before making an ATM transaction.......

This lawless prez can do what he wants with a stroke of a pen and a cell phone, so it doesn't matter.
Surprised the ad wasn't in Muslim.

I realize I'm getting dangerously close to forgoing George Bernard Shaw's admonition to 'not get in the mud with a pig...you get dirty...and besides the pig likes it' in discussing this with you but 'Muslim' is not a language, its a religion. Muslim's speak Arabic. Depending where they are from....the majority speak Arabic...

I got the point, but just thought I would make a more valid one. Morals aren't the deciding factors in court though, and they have the final say

...on what is legal and illegal. They do not have the final say (nor any say) on what is right or wrong.

...on what is legal and illegal. They do not have the final say (nor any say) on what is right or wrong.

So the real question would be...

Do you believe it's morally wrong to not respect another nation's borders even though it's a fairly universal concept of right and wrong?

Pretty sure there was Arabic in the commercial, too.
