I personally loved the commercial. It does surprise me that people are getting upset about this commercial. But maybe I loved it because I have a parent that immigrated to the US and it shares the diversity that exists in this country and that many Americans share on a daily basis, which is something that some people who are few generations removed from their ancestors coming over may not understand at all. That's fine, but people don't have to get upset about people being different and speaking a different language (which the US still doesn't have an official language since that is something that the states usually determine).

Regardless, it's just a commercial that is supposed to have good feeling to it and that we live in the United States of America, the greatest damn country in the world.

Amen.

No don't end thread.

I actually have a wife who is the first generation of her family to be here.

Our kids are bi-racial and speak three languages.

America is an English speaking country and needs to be respected as such.

The reason her native country is not a 1st world nation (as many 3rd world nations have this issue) is not because they are lazy or stupid. They are the exact opposite. The problem is each region has a specific dialect they speak and only vaguely understand the other regions dialect.

We are now living in a country where "lil mexicos" are popping up and the English language is getting butchered and not even learned.

If we continue to go down this path, the country will begin to segregate itself into smaller pockets and unique dialects.

This will eventually break this country and it will no longer be one strong nation working together.

We are already seeing this happen in certain areas.

This is a slippery slope.
Every large country has multiple languages or at least heavily varied dialects.

If the Broncos had shown up, very few of you would care about a commercial

I have been to the Coca Cola World of Coke numerous times and I would just like to add that Coke enjoys emphasizing the global aspect of their products. They love to display the many items of memorabilia from all over as well as products we know and love at home; they even let people sample all of their foreign and domestic products. I think they were trying to make the point that America, like Coke, is universal and is appreciated by many.

If I go live in another country, I don't expect them to learn my language so that I can communicate. It would be my goal to be able to speak the language of the country I am calling home

Like someone said, It has nothing to do with people hating other people. Hell, we are all descendants of former immigrants. But our families learned English and learned to prosper in this country.

You now have people here that do not care to learn English. Its not a lot to ask someone

I don't know where this thought comes from. I really spend a lot of time with immigrant communities and this is probably the biggest excuse that I hear people say and it makes me really wonder how people come to this conclusion. Every single immigrant that I have met has some degree of speaking in English and everyone wants to learn. Now they might have trouble speaking due to being afraid of making a mistake, but it's not that they don't try. Mastering a language obviously takes years.
Moreover, speaking another language or having a strong accent doesn't mean they can't speak English and those people shouldn't have to give up their native tongues
either.

Sometimes, I think it may be just xenophobia though. I'm not saying you are or anyone is xenophobic. I remember one day I was with my parent's at our store and I started to talk to my mom in Tagalog and a couple walked in and heard us speaking another language and immediately said, "we don't have to buy from Mexicans. Let's go. (We don't look Mexican btw)" I walked out and politely told them to leave in English. They looked at me pretty dumbfounded when I spoke to them in English as if we couldn't understand. Last night I was at the gym and I played basketball at the gym with some friends and a Mexican friend was there and during the game we would communicate in English. After the game we started speaking in Spanish. A girl came up to us and told us to speak "American."

Anyway, speaking another language was never the point of the commercial nor speaking English was. It was to show that we're united despite our different backgrounds.

I don't know if anyone has seen Coke's Facebook page, but it's mind-blowing how many people thought that was our national anthem being sung.

I work in law enforcement

We see it every day.

Now some are just making the excuse that they "No Habla" because they think we will just give up and leave, but we see do see it a lot. This could be because they are illegal and don't have access to learn English, but they are out there.

That may very well be the case. I have an Italian friend who got pulled over once and she pretended she didn't understand or speak any English so the cops would go away. They let her go.

You call someone who speaks two languages, bi-lingual. If they speak three or more languages they are multi-lingual. But, what do you call someone who only speaks one language?

'Merican.

Boom.

It's amazing to me how the rest of the world learns a little bit of English to accommodate American tourists, but most of our country freaks out if someone speaks a different language on United States soil.

Just get over it. This country was built on diversity. Singing America the Beautiful in a variety of languages (American is not a language, by the way) showcases the immense love a whole slew of people have for this nation.

Do you get pissed off when they have people sign the National Anthem? That's considered a language different from English, is it wrong for those people to want to hear the Anthem in their natural language?

Setting aside the obvious plethora of North American Indian languages, can anyone name, lets say, 3 non-English languages spoken by non-immigrant Americans? Just wondering.

Sign and Braille. There's 2. Unless you meant spoken in the true literal sense.

If a person's parents were immigrants, but said person was born in America, is that person considered an immigrant?

If not, the answer to your question is a bunch.

Off the top of my head I can come up with creole and Gullah. I am not sure if you would count hawaiian.
