@TheMookieMonster may not be that easy. As a cadet at the Air Force Academy he has been receiving a salary as if he was already commissioned.
The DOD changed the law in 2016 to recognize great athletes and allow them to pursue their athletic endeavors. When he graduates, he will be commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force with a 2 year Active Duty Committment. However, the 2016 law change allows him to serve his two years in an active Reserve Unit. He will graduate with a degree (probably in Engineering) and then be assigned to a branch of the Air Force. He will have to attend some basic training courses (I assume) probably and then negotiate an assignment. The Air Force will have some say in whether going to Tennessee meets the intent of the 2016 law allowing him a waiver on his active duty committment. I did not attend the Air Force Academy but have walked the Academy Grounds and worked with several academy graduates. Hope this helps.
This only holds true if you started your 3rd year. You don’t owe the academies a penny if you leave before your 3rd year. He is a Sophomore, and my guess is since he is now seen as a Top 10 prospect he’s leaving since he doesn’t owe anything.
