College Baseball - Transfer Portal Tracker

I told ya'll what was going to happen. I had heard rumors at SEC tournament that LSU was going to buy a Natty. They are becoming the elite travel ball team with the big sponsor, you fill in the blank. They are going to throw money at the biggest transfer portal guys out there this year and the plan is for it to continue in the coming years. No need to go get HS kids when you can get proven top level college kids to build a team that can win it all. They are not done and you will see some pitchers headed that way in the next few days. Hopefully not any leaving UT. But we can say what we want, money talks when it comes to life. If you get enough money, you would probably go play anywhere. They have the rabid fan base to do it.
This post scares me.

The Tony Basilio Show

It's Basilio, so grain of salt, but some pointed comments about NIL and also:

Tennessee Baseball is nervous about Texas perhaps coming after Frank Anderson. They have an opening at pitching coach with lots of money to spend. Of course Coach Anderson was at Texas many moons ago. It will be interesting to see Danny White's/UT reaction if Texas and Anderson get serious with each other. Surely all involved here understand the importance of keeping Frank Anderson here.

There is no doubt that LSU has the financial resources and rabid fan base to draw from. They are certainly putting all of their chips at the middle of the table, and they may very well pull off “buying” a national championship. At the same time, however, putting together this type of elite travel ball team comes at a risk. Money may talk and draw elite talent there, but that comes with massive expectations and pressure. Anything less than winning a national title will be a failure to their fanbase and their program. There are egos and roster management to factor in. Injuries may happen. It’s a long season, and the unknowns are still there. We know firsthand, that while depth and talent may lead to a dominant regular season, all bets are still off when it comes to the NCAA Tournament. The team still has to play its best at the right time.

LSU reminds me of the LA Dodgers from last season, the LA Lakers, and to an extent, the NY Yankees of past seasons. All had the money to buy a boatload of elite talent. While the Dodgers won the World Series in 2020, none of those teams won it all last year.

Again, the Tigers may be the team to pull it off next season. They certainly have the coaching, are acquiring the elite talent, and have the financial backing. However, with all that, they still may not win the coveted national championship. Time will tell.

It only makes the expectations and crash landing that much more fun to watch. Timing is so important in baseball, and money can’t buy the timing.

Basilio does indeed make some pointed comments about NIL. There’s been chatter and discussion about NIL occurring on both VQ and GoVols247.

One the one hand, it’s challenging to sort out what’s what, but it’s a layered situation particularly with regards to Tennessee athletic department, collectives, and the NCAA investigation that hasn’t been fully resolved yet. It’ll be interesting to see how everyone navigates it, both in the short term and long term.

I do think our fanbase and donors can step up (if financially able to do so) and impact NIL by making contribution(s).

Keeping my fingers crossed we don't lose anyone notable to the portal. Just a couple more days to sweat it out...

The countdown is on to July 1st. So far, nothing from the Tennessee baseball beat and no names on D1 Baseball’s transfer tracker (aside from Kruise Newman who transferred to Walters State).

Frank Anderson isn't going anywhere. He's not exactly getting any younger, he loves Knoxville, and I'm pretty damn confident Tony would make sure he gets a healthy raise before he watches his pitching coach leave over money. I don't think FA wants to leave Knoxville anytime soon. I do remain concerned about NIL stunting our recruiting, particularly in the portal, but you don't make a $60 million investment in LNS only to then let your hall-of-fame caliber pitching coach walk to Texas for a few hundred thousand dollars.

Good article from Baton Rouge Newspaper on why LSU isn't going to panic over their current situation.

Scott Rabalais: Ole Miss' CWS title doesn't make life much tougher for LSU than it already was

Like I posted earlier, this article implies LSU is not concerned about the nuclear arms race now on-going in college baseball. The article does admit that Coach Jay Johnson was not LSU's first, second, third or even fourth choice to replace Coach Paul Mainerri. They wanted Coach Bianco. Bianco played catcher for LSU and was an assistant coach for legendary Coach Skip Bertman at LSU. He said no. LSU interviewed several others without success. Coach Jay Johnson didn't have SEC coaching experience but took the job when offered. When he failed to win his Regional this year... the pressure was on. The amount of money LSU is throwing at the problem smells of desperation and the hiring of a possible replacement for Coach Jay Johnson indicates he is on a short leash.

Guess that means our roster is set for next season?
